After listening to Ryan here and there, I finally dove in, so to speak.  Just picked up Forward in Reverse and Redefined, and now I will be watching for concert dates in my area, for sure.

See Guenter's post above (#356). If enough from Chicago get in touch with Ryan's team, it could happen.

Re: Ryan McGarvey

Tonight my friend Chris Watson is opening for Ryan at a place called The Keys in Fort Worth, Texas. I'm so sorry I will not be able to go because I'm a little under the weather. However. Mike "Rockfarmer" will represent the Bonaforum to the best of his abilities.

Re: Ryan McGarvey

Well... Ryans Ft Worth show was last night.  My ears are still ringing from the volume of his 50 watt cat 5 blaring in a pretty small room.
Don't know how this show was advertised or marketed, but there were probably only 30-35 folks there and my guess is that most of them were just bar regulars.

At any rate, My friend (and Lori's), Chris Watson kicked things and played about 45 minutes.  Chris is local and is moving his music more to the R&B side of Blues.  He's recently expanded his horn section and now, in addition to his sax player, he has added a trumpet and trombone.  Chris has a fantastic soulful voice and is a decent guitar player.  Really love his music and we go see him whenever we get the chance.

So Ryan...  Holy Hades what a monster player.  I saw him play the backstage at Claptons Crossroads festival a few years ago, but this is my first full Ryan show.  I've seen many guitar players over the years and I would put Ryan up there with the best.  He is an incredible talent on the 6 string.  I can't say that he is a wonderful singer, but his playing makes up for it.  It makes me kind of want to try to hook Ryan and Chris together but musically I think they are not alligned.  Anyway, I didn't write down the set list, but he played for several hours and those of us that were there were treated to a rare and exciting musician.

I got to the venue early and had an opportunity to talk to Ryan for a bit.  What a really nice, although somehwat shy, young man.

We spoke about venues and i told him that he needs to get to SoCal and book the CoachHouse so RickB, if you are reading this, pester that young man to come see you guys.

He's headed back to Europe in a week or so for another two month 11 country stint so please, if he is anywhere remotely close to you, do yourself and your friends a favor and get to the show.

This may have been my first Ryan show, but I guarantee that this won't be the last.

Thanks for the word RF. I was almost ready to head for New Mexico to see him a bit ago. Considering some of the acts booked into the Coach House lately he'd be a breath of fresh air. (Hip hop, Rap and washed up comedians ???)

My sentiments exactly after catching him in the UK back in May - I'm down for 2 shows for the November tour, maybe 3.

Thanks for the heads-up on Chris Watson, gonna be checking YouTube shortly.

Re: Ryan McGarvey

Ryan was in town last night. Small historic venue a block from the venue Joe first played in OKC. VZD's has seen the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Government Mule among others over the last 30 years.
An accidental double booking forced a late start of 11pm 30 to 40 troopers stayed till the end. Most people had never seen Ryan although billed as Ray McGarvey in venue posters and advertisement in the local entertainment rag, Ryan handled that with humor.

3rd time in OKC 2nd time since the second CD was released. The last two shows dominated by material from the 2nd CD which I have not bonded with. Always impressed with Ryan's playing and the songs that showcase that are my favorite. Really like the new drummer. The bass player is solid and the band was tight. It was on the loud side for the room but the venue engineer did a good job with the mix.

Ryan makes it hard to describe his style of music. You can catch the nods to Joe's influence but the new album material is more power ballads and I heard that as a description. Sure there is some blues and blues rock but that is just a part of what he does.

As to Mike's wondering about lack of promotion. That really is a difficult task in this day and age. In the not so distant past people paid more attention to the traditional media sources. I was lucky and got some press the first time I brought Joe in.  Getting a write up in local press certainly helps but doesn't help if nobody reads it. Advertising however did help get one of the regulars of the blues rock attendees there as he saw the ad the venue placed albeit a misspelled ad.  As far as advertising goes it is expensive to do and the return on investment is hard to asses.

Ryan none the less has managed to make some things happen both here and abroad. It is a testament to his work ethic and drive. Like Joe he is a good person and he has people pulling for him and the support of Joe's fanbase who have embraced him. It is still a slow build here but he seems to be on more of a fast track in Europe. Had a good time last night meeting some of Ryan's friends and fan's as well as some Bonamassa fans in attendance. Till next time.

Re: Ryan McGarvey

That's an excellent and perceptive summary, Jim. As far as over here is concerned, Ryan is pretty much following the route that Joe took in his early days, and is generating the same enthusiasm in audiences, and the positive word of mouth that goes with that. As far as I'm aware (I claim no special knowledge,) his 'management' is his Dad and that, together with Ryan's somewhat introvert character, may well be holding him back in the US. Maybe he needs to find himself a smart and aggressive manager who will push him in the right places, like the major summer festivals on the East coast where Ryan has to my knowledge never yet played. I still think that the world is his oyster, and like Joe, you simply must see him live.

RIP Iron Man
