Topic: Aberdeen - 23 September

A Joe gig without travelling, took me a wee while to get my head round that smile

The set list was to be the same as Cardiff but they didn't play Spanish Boots. No guest tonight. Joe commented that the venue was an echo chamber and that everyone could come back tomorrow and hear the songs again as they would still be up in the roof. I am not a lover of this venue and although the music was loud tonight, the quality was better than I expected.

I love the new song arrangements especially on Dislocated Boy and TBOJH. Plus of course the extended ending of Song of Yesterday which BCC used to do. This show was heavier on the rock side tonight and the version of Sloe Gin was easily the heaviest version I have heard. I would like to thank the audience tonight for being so respectful, I have never been part of an Aberdeen audience that didn't talk through songs or go back and fore to the bar/toilets. It's a measure of the respect Joe & Co have buit up over the years.

Not sure of crowd numbers but there weren't many empty seats.

Edit. Midnight Blues was the highlight for me.

Re: Aberdeen - 23 September

Sounds like you got a great show there, Kenny, and that the sound issues that Joe was worried about didn't turn out to be a problem. Have a great time at your next one tomorrow!

Re: Aberdeen - 23 September

So no song replacement instead of Spanish Boots Kenny?

Re: Aberdeen - 23 September

Well that's the Aberdeen gig over and it was well - dreadful.  The sound was way too loud and JB's guitar playing skills were totally lost in a mush of music.  The vocals - he could have been singing anything - there was no vocal clarity.  I have seen JB perform before and I know just how good he is - last night was like listening to your neighbour's son playing in his dad's garage with his mates on a Sunday afternoon.  I know the venue at Aberdeen is poor but this simply wasn't good enough for what we paid.  Indeed a lot of the audience had departed long before the end - they actually missed the best part as the last few songs were to be fair pretty good.  Anyone going to see JB for the first time must have been wondering what the rave reviews were all about.

I've just got back home after my travels to see the gig in Cardiff, and everything you are saying was true for that gig as well. Inaudible vocals....keyboards way too loud, and I could hardly hear the bass.   Great band, dreadful sound mixing.

That's a great shame ,when I saw Joe in Bournemouth on Friday it was the best I have seen him play. And every time he has played Bournemouth he just gets Better and Better .

Thanks Natasha. We were under the PA on the left and side at the front so the sound was as good as it could be. Other areas look to have had a sound issue. Always the same with these "sheds".

Hi Kenny.
Sorry to hear the sound wasn't too good in the granite city.
Seems to be a common theme on this tour.
Fingers crossed for Brighton on Saturday.
Let's not sacrifice quality for volume.
Lester.

It looks like it depended on where you were sitting last night. I was sitting next to Kenny and thought the sound was surprisingly good. I could hear the vocals, guitar, bass etc clearly. I guess it's extremely difficult to get the sound right in all areas of these big aircraft hanger style venues. Hopefully these issues are taken into account when booking future tours.

Pretty nice video of Dislocated Boy from Aberdeen

Re: Aberdeen - 23 September

I forgot to say that my photos from the Aberdeen gig can be seen on my flickr site -  just google search flickr buckieluggerbl and you will find them on the homepage.  They will get moved from the homepage to the "music" set at the weekend.

Re: Aberdeen - 23 September

Having been at the Edinburgh show last night with far better sound quality, it seems to me that the loud/heavy gig in Aberdeen was to compensate for the venue's inferior acoustics.

In the words of Mrs Brown That's Nice for those in Edinburgh - tough on those that forked out £110 for two tickets in Aberdeen.

That seems to be a reoccurring theme here; check a number of the show reviews in the past few years.
I think it’s not necessarily the type of venue (echo chamber or not); but the need to try and over power the venue with too much line array’s hanging from the ceiling.

Loud and clear yes; loud and muddy no.. That’s my thinking of sound reinforcement.

I think if you can get a floor seat that’s where Joe’s best sound is. If you have to be in a balcony somewhere, now you’re at the mercy of the theatre/arena’s sound system.

Case in point, I saw Joe in Shea’s Theatre Buffalo NY USA; a great ‘old style’ acoustics theatre.
I had great viewing seats from the balcony at row 5 center, but the sound was just a booming mess and this was an ‘old style’ great acoustics theatre. And only when Joe did his solos did his guitar cut through.

Now I saw Joe in an arena in London, ON Canada from the second row dead centre and the sound was soooooooooo amazing there I was a very happy man. Not sure what it was like at the back of the arena but I didn’t want to leave my seat to find out.

So bottom line: it’s up to the sound guy to find the right mix

(oppps didn’t mean to hijack this thread, but maybe someday Joe’s sound mix guy will read these; but I’m waiting like everyone else for the release of the 2014 schedule)

(If only I had 1% of Joe's guitar talent)
