I guess that a list like this is just a snap-shot for that period of time, - and Sounds from what I recall was a bit more focussed on what was then called "new wave", which happened to be punk or derivatives of it, hence I guess Hugh Cornwell being in there, - an artist that I admire greatly for his song writing, performance, singing but I would not put him in any top 10 guitarist list as he was more of rhythm player with Dave Greenfield on keyboards taking so much of the lead in an almost Ray Manzarek way. I was a big fan of the Stranglers in 1980 and they had just released two brilliant albums almost on top of each other with Rattus Norvegicus and No More Heroes, - here is a clip from around that time http://youtu.be/yVR5gytdWZ8
From memory EVH was not getting any airplay or coverage back then, - "Women and Children first" was my first album and I think that was 1980. Coverage was limited, little or no radio play, - Nicky Horne's late night show on Capital Radio, and then we had Old Grey Whistle test on TV. The Eddie that I thought might be there is Fast Eddie Clarke from Motorhead, - what a big fast sound he had! No Angus Young in there, - 1980 had been pretty glorious with Back In Black which was a somewhat sigh of relief being the first album without Bon who sadly left on a real pivotal point as they were just breaking through. Another surprise is lack of David Gilmour, The Wall was released around that time I think Another Brick.... as a single did get a lot of airplay.
Rory G likewise had little to no coverage back then from memory, - and seem to remember M Schenker being reported negatively in those days for departing UFO at a point that looked like a high/break through for them, - in those days for a guitarist to go solo or put his own name above a band seemed a bit arrogant.
