Topic: best guitarists .... in 1980

found an old record from Sounds paper (weekly publication in the UK). Yes another meaningless pole, but I thought it an interesting time piece, - and appreciate it is UK biased but thought it might be discussion worthy?

1. Richie Blackmore
2. Jimmy Page
3. Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)
4. Steve Howe
5. Brian May
6. Bill Nelson
7. Mick Jones (Clash)
8. Hugh Cornwell (Stanglers)
9. Steve Hackett
10. Eric Clapton

BTW Richie Blackmore was number one, two years running. 1980 was after some pretty amazing Deep Purple and Rainbow years and I think just released Down to Earth with Graham Bonet (Rainbow) singing (I still have my clear vinyl album).

Steve Jones top three, - yes, very underrated, been listening to some of his stuff recently realising how he carried the whole song on many occasions. EC only number 10?

Re: best guitarists .... in 1980

I know back in the day Snouds wasn't quite as "Right On" as the NME, but I'm surprised (even though I'm bound to have bought that issue) how ROCK the list is.
Surprised Alex Lifeson's not in there, plenty of big Rush fans wrote for Snouds. Bet Geddy will have been high up in the bassist poll.

Re: best guitarists .... in 1980

I am the biggest Page fan in the world...but he was not on any level around 1980 (as the last - sadly- Zep boots will tell you)...smacked out of his mind.
Ritchie was tearing it up in Rainbow.
Jeff Beck should be here for just getting better and better with each passing year.
Great to see Bill Nelson there...his work in Be Bop was sometimes just stunning.

How about Joe at three years old lol

Re: best guitarists .... in 1980

A bit early for Steve Clark but I would figure Rory Gallagher would have been on such a list.  His name is hardly mentioned in lists so I wonder if he's one of those players that always gets missed.

Kind of like Gary Moore.  You hardly see his name in any lists but is very well respected.

...yeah! ...no Eddie?

Re: best guitarists .... in 1980

Michael Schenker anyone...? His best work was with UFO, which he'd left by then but there are some good tunes on first couple of MSG albums...

Re: best guitarists .... in 1980

I guess that a list like this is just a snap-shot for that period of time, - and Sounds from what I recall was a bit more focussed on what was then called "new wave", which happened to be punk or derivatives of it, hence I guess Hugh Cornwell being in there, - an artist that I admire greatly for his song writing, performance, singing but I would not put him in any top 10 guitarist list as he was more of rhythm player with Dave Greenfield on keyboards taking so much of the lead in an almost Ray Manzarek way. I was a big fan of the Stranglers in 1980 and they had just released two brilliant albums almost on top of each other with Rattus Norvegicus and No More Heroes, - here is a clip from around that time http://youtu.be/yVR5gytdWZ8

From memory EVH was not getting any airplay or coverage back then, - "Women and Children first" was my first album and I think that was 1980. Coverage was limited, little or no radio play, - Nicky Horne's late night show on Capital Radio, and then we had Old Grey Whistle test on TV. The Eddie that I thought might be there is Fast Eddie Clarke from Motorhead, - what a big fast sound he had! No Angus Young in there, - 1980 had been pretty glorious with Back In Black which was a somewhat sigh of relief being the first album without Bon who sadly left on a real pivotal point as they were just breaking through. Another surprise is lack of David Gilmour, The Wall was released around that time I think Another Brick.... as a single did get a lot of airplay.

Rory G likewise had little to no coverage back then from memory, - and seem to remember M Schenker being reported negatively in those days for departing UFO at a point that looked like a high/break through for them, - in those days for a guitarist to go solo or put his own name above a band seemed a bit arrogant.

Re: best guitarists .... in 1980

Interesting snapshot of the time.  Not all the guys I would have chosen, but I was 7 in 1980, and my musical world didn't yet revolve around guitar...

Blizzard was only released in September of 1980, so Randy was probably unknown when this poll was done.  Before that, he had a name in LA with Quiet Riot, but their albums were only released in Japan.
