Re: The Rides = KWS, Stephen Stills, and more

We had a really good time at the show tonight. Pretty short set, only 1 1/2 hrs, and no opening act. Kenny Wayne Shepherd is really good. (Plus he looks like Jason Stackhouse from the  TV show True Blood wink) Enjoyed watching him and Stills playing off each other on the songs. They were really jamming! Sound could have been a little better. Still's voice was quite weak and overpowered by the instruments, a little off at times. He and KWS alternated on singing the songs. Preferred Shepherd's voice. Impossible to do any filming, blocked at times by different people and they weren't allowing any recording because they were filming it professionally for PBS. Some of the same camera guys that were at the Rock Candy shows. They all know us there now, it's pretty cool! Here is the setlist:

Roadhouse
Pretty Good Love     (I love this song!)
Don't Want Lies
Search and Destroy
Can't Get Enough
I've Got to Use My Imagination
Honey Bee   (We think this was the standout song of the night, keyboardist had a great solo on the Hammond B3 and Stills and Shepherd were just going off on this one with their solos as well as playing back and forth at each other)
Love the One You're With
Blue on Black
Only Teardrops Fall
Talk to Me Baby
Word Game

Encore
For What It's Worth
Rockin' In The Free World

There really is nothing like being able to see a band play in a tiny club. Great experience and worth standing in line for 3 hrs for a good seat. And we weren't the first ones waiting, there were already 4 people there at 3:30!

Beth is not on the bill for the show here in Oklahoma. Maybe having here open didn't work out.

Beth has it posted all over her facebook that she will be the opening act for their September tour. I guess the Iridium shows are pretour ones since it is still August, but Jim, I don't see any show listed for Oklahoma on the Rides tour page. Are they going there later in the fall? If so, maybe that's why she won't be there. Who knows.

It is November 15th in Ardmore OK may not be official but It is confirmed via the promoter.

Re: The Rides = KWS, Stephen Stills, and more

Just picked up the CD this evening and am almost all the way though.. really enjoying it. Beth Hart will be here with The Ride on Tues., Sept 17 at our new casino. Not sure I can make that show. I will be doing 3 shows the next 3 days with Ryan McGarvey.

Here are a few photos from the show. These are actually stills from some pretty bad video I took, too many things blocking the camera, but couldn't help but try. Keep them small, the larger they are, the more blurry. Also photo of Stephen Stills pick. We made friends with this really cool woman we stood for 3 hrs in line with. She ended up with a couple of picks and gave us one. It always fascinates me how each guitarist has their own particular pick, it's almost like their fingerprint, because they all seem so unique and different. Stills' pick is very thin and has little grippy type things at the top in order to hold onto it better

The pick is a Herco 50 made here in Benicia by my friend Jimi Dunlop, he makes Joe's picks too. If you're a known artist they'll make any personalized pick you want. In Joe's case it took a little prodding and an article in one of the guitar mags where Joe raved about Dunlop Jazz III's. BTW, do you know who that drummer is?

Thanks Jane, all the buzz about this "super group" and nobody mentioned that Chris was a member as well. BTW, you bought the CD, is Chris the drummer credited on the recording? Who handled the bass playing duties as well?

Did a little diggin' and found out Kevin McCormick plays bass in the Rides. He's played with a who's who list of artists for decades. His connection with this band is through Stephen Stills who he's backed solo and with CSN.

Hi Jo,

At www.kennywayneshepherd.net, it says "the Rides will tour the US in September with very special guest Beth Hart.   ...the tour wraps on Sept. 27 at the Grand Sierra Resort & Casino, Reno, NV."

One more source for you.

It's on The Rides website on the second page of their tour.   www.theridesband.com  Just might be there if I can connect the dots! If not they're at The Fillmore in SF on the 25th.

Hay J Dawg,  No I am having to save my pennies to see Joe in Reno in Dec.   A good friend has been wanting to see Beth (not that I wouldn't) since seeing her on the Kennedy Center event.

I was just trying to help facilitate a good time for him by staying on top of the tickets.

It looks like things came together and slipped by me while I was busy with the boat and horses.

I will say that you can ALWAYS count on the Forum to answer a cry for help of any kind!  Thanks again!

If you are headed thru to Reno, stop by and check out the Street Teaming, Wild Born, Dog Stompin', Squirrel Chompin', Blues Lovin' Chincoteague Pony.

"GG" had a little behavior set back ( worse horse fight I have been in in over 50 years of handling horses) but that should be back on track in another week or two.

I was too busy to give her the steady work she needs and substituted a daily treat instead.

For a pony trying to reform from being a spoiled barn baby when I got her last year, it was a big mistake that I should have known better than to do.

All's Well that End's Well!

Re: The Rides = KWS, Stephen Stills, and more

Took me a while to get around to picking up The Rides debut.  I'm enjoying it, as expected.

"That's a Pretty Good Love" grabbed me right away.  Also like "Don't Want Lies" which was the early video "preview" discussed here.  Stephen's voice sounding pretty good on that one.

Enjoying the cover of "Rockin' In The Free World", as I type this.

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.
