A master of understatement!  I cant see anyone beating them except LA if Quick stands on his head.

Canadian born goalies have all but disappeared.

Re: No Hockey Fans This Post Season???

Hawks played well enough to play again.  Now to hope they didn't just set up a return to Detroit, for the Wings to be able to close it out in front of their home fans.

Want to see them back here, come Wednesday!

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.

Re: No Hockey Fans This Post Season???

Getting ready to watch Hawks Wings and they have been pretty good games. But this round you can not beat watching the Sharks Kings. The games are wide open, hard hitting and extremely good goaltending. You can't turn your head for a second as their games go on.
I guess it would be the way it should be to see Pens Hawks in the finals, them being The Best in this short season, but Boston LA would be different....Not Basketball.
So do you think Torey Krug for Boston will still be making $900,000 next year.

Milbury and the other guy picked Detroit to win. Personally, I think there was a momentum shift in game 5...and expect to see a game 7 on Wednesday.
Key to the game may be the Hawks power play...they need to cash in.

As for Toews quote, hes right...I said it here towards the end of the streak: the streak and the President's Cup are meaningless without the big Cup at the end of the season.

With no fandom skin in the game Im pulling for Detroit, since we know Jimmy Howard....unless Emery is able to make it  back in either this or the next round, since we know (and like) him better.

Re: No Hockey Fans This Post Season???

It's so funny how this sport does not catch on more. THE CUP is the most prestigious trophy in sports. Tv coverage has improved and the few tweaks have sped up the action.
I am expecting a Game 7 in this series too.

Fandom and viewership is largely generated by having grown up with the sport or having kids in the sport. You cant pick up a ball and go to the park and shoot hoops or play touch football, or even pick up a tennis racket and some balls and smack them around. There are also few high school hockey programs outside of the Mid-Atlantic, New England and Midwest.

TV ratings have been steadily improving and most NHL franchises are profitable, but its going to be a long time (if ever due to the above) before its anything like a mainstream sport. The Winter Classic may help things catch on, and something like the 1980 Olympic US win or the 1972 Summit Series but involving the US would give viewership a boost. Geopolitics is probably not in a state where those epic events could be matched though.

That said, its the ONLY sport where I can watch games at every level (youth, HS, College, Junior, Semipro, NHL) without having any rooting interest. And that's after 11 years of total immersion, 10 months a year, 4-5 days a week. (Thank goodness for concerts to replace some of that time!)

Edit: and indeed looks like a game 7. Nice penalty shot, even if the call was iffy!

Re: No Hockey Fans This Post Season???

BUMMER. Only bright spot for me is that if you would have told me 2 months ago that the Sharks would go to a game 7 in the Western Conference Semifinals I wouldn't have believed you.

I don't really care who wins between the Hawks & Red Wings but I hope whoever advances PUNISHES the Kings.

Going to have to solve Quick, and I don't think the Wings can.

Re: No Hockey Fans This Post Season???

Niemi kept Sharks in it but Quick stole the show.
Amazing save near the end. He is a blast to watch!

I'm just headed out to the United Center to watch game 7 Hawks vs. Wings.
I'm feeling pretty confident after the last two games, but anything can happen in a game 7. The adrenaline is already starting to pump...and I'm just a spectator! I imagine the players will be pretty amped up.
I think the Hawks would be HAPPY to punish the Kings for you.

Go Hawks!

Looks like Detroit survived any early Hawks pressure. GL!  wouldn't mind catching a game on my next biz trip to Chi if the dates fall right.

Re: No Hockey Fans This Post Season???

Thank god Chicago won or they would have rioted in the streets.
Ok now I am going for LA and Jonathan Quick! tongue

Re: No Hockey Fans This Post Season???

The last 4 teams standing are the last 4 teams to have won the cup.

Pit - 09
Chicago - 10
Boston - 11
LA - 12
Amazing, and I guess its happened before.

Re: No Hockey Fans This Post Season???

OK, so it's Pit's turn again!

I'm sure you had and blast AND YES PLEASE!

Not quite sure what to do tonight....no games and not ready for baseball just yet.

Re: No Hockey Fans This Post Season???

Hawks-Wings game 7 was the most exciting sporting event I've ever attended...the Bears beating the Saints in 2005 to advance to the Super Bowl was a close 2nd.
Of the four teams remaining, any one of them has the talent to win the Cup. Although the Hawks handled the Kings pretty well during the season (I think they were 2-1), this is a different Kings team that got better as the season progressed. The Hawks are favored to beat the Kings, and the Pens to beat the Bruins, but I don't pay too much attention to Vegas odds.
I can't wait for these series to get started!

Go Hawks!
