Re: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

No problem Kenny.  The Beacon does well for us as they have a disabled line so generally I can get tickets for any event we want to see when it's a rough ticket.  MSG now owning the Beacon (and Radio City) now does the same so we were able to get tickets for the Crossroads Guitar Festival for both nights.

Oh man what a show last night at the Beacon. Played songs they don't normally play. Check this setlist http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/tom-petty … 846d5.html

Re: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Didn't think show 2 could better show 1 but it did. As expected a different setlist but what a performance. Not enough adjectives.......  http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/tom-petty … 9bd82.html

It's good to be King the highlight for me. Didn't expect to hear it.

Mike Campbell rules. Think I have said that before smile

Can't wait for this - the reviews are spectacular.

Have a safe flight home Kenny

Thanks Alan, that's me home safe and sound. What an incredible 2 nights, you are going to be in for one helluva night. Wish I could have stayed on for the other 3 concerts.

Hey I had to get home! We did the NY Mets game the night before and it was so raw out we made it through the two innings to finish the game suspended by rain from the night before and three of that nights game before the cold was too much for us. And I managed to lose my iPhone on the way to the game but luckily Apple in NY in Fifth Avenue is open 24/7 so there was the rest of Saturday night.

On to Tom Petty. I saw him at MSG three or so years ago and thought they ruined the night by doing about five songs in a row off the latest album and never got the momentum back.

Last night was another story. The one strange thing on entering was while they opened the outside doors at 7 they would not let us into the theatre itself until 7:30. Even wih the requisite stop for a t-shirt (Joe didn't have any Beacon ones although I purchased three different ones on the here nights) it got real crowded at the inside doors.

The show started 8:20 and the fans were on their feet the entire night. They played some hits and a lot of old cuts and covers they hadn't done in a while. This was the Tom Petty I've listened to for a while and seen a few times on tour. The Beacon is such a more intimate venue to see a show than MSG or other large arenas. Tom seemed quite happy to be playing there. Had I known the shows were going to be that varied I may have seen more and I hope Tom returns to do this again.

Re: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Thanks for the comments Alan, didn't mean to rush you smile Did you recover your phone?

Yeah, Tom and the band seemed to relish playing the Beacon (and why shouldn't they) and it showed in their performance. This is the smallest venue I have seen him in and I am glad it wasn't a Greatest Hits tour. It would be great if he made this an annual event, much like the Allman Bros. I know he is based in L.A. but I think he has a love affair with New York. There's even a pub in the city called Cabin Down Below named after his song from Wildflowers.

Re: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Didn't recover it but luckily I had insurance on it so was able to get a new one at a reasonable cost. However it was a total run around at first. I called Apple who said I first had to suspend the service and "freeze" the old phone. I have the Find your iPhone app but whoever found it took the chip out so it couldn't be located or "pinged".  So I had to call AT&T to suspend the service. However all stores were closed yesterday! I then called Apple support who couldn't tell me the store that opened early yesterday! I had my iPad with me so saw the Apple on Fifth Avenue is open 24/7. So at 11 PM Friday night it was off to Apple where they finally got the new phone turned on by AT&T although I couldn't update my apps and contacts until I got home today and plugged it into my PC - whew!

Re: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

You must have been running around like a blue arsed fly.

To get back on topic, over the 5 nights he played 9 songs from Wildflowers. No Free Fallin or Mary Jane's Last Dance though. Wouldn't have expected that.

Re: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

There was enough Mary Jane at The Beacon lol. Just a great stand of shows.

Re: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Now that they have concluded their "love affair" with the Beacon, I'm hoping Tom makes this a regular event.

Could do with cheaper hotels though smile

Totally agree. Everything I've read from Tom is he enjoyed doing these more than the usual greatest hits shows. Similar to someone I've liked for years - John Mellencamp - who had the same awakening a few years back. And similar to Tom I actually stopped seeing John as if was the same greatest hits show with one or two new songs off his latest album.

Hotels in NYC are usually an expensive commodity. One option is staying in NJ or Queens and taking the train in. But for convenience it's hard. The Hotel Beacon can be reasonable when booked well in advance. We're treating ourselves as usual to the hopefully soon to be announced Gov't Mule NYE run.

Re: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Would have loved to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers at the Beacon Theatre, but I had to be back right in time to see Ryan McGarvey in Hamburg at the Downtown Bluesclub.

Re: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

A quote from Joe last night " Watching Tom Petty on tv. Mike Campbell is one of the most underrated guitarists out there. They are also purveyors of fine vintage guitars".

I'll second and third that smile

First solo album by Benmont Tench released next week plus a new Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers album due in the summer.
