Hey I had to get home! We did the NY Mets game the night before and it was so raw out we made it through the two innings to finish the game suspended by rain from the night before and three of that nights game before the cold was too much for us. And I managed to lose my iPhone on the way to the game but luckily Apple in NY in Fifth Avenue is open 24/7 so there was the rest of Saturday night.
On to Tom Petty. I saw him at MSG three or so years ago and thought they ruined the night by doing about five songs in a row off the latest album and never got the momentum back.
Last night was another story. The one strange thing on entering was while they opened the outside doors at 7 they would not let us into the theatre itself until 7:30. Even wih the requisite stop for a t-shirt (Joe didn't have any Beacon ones although I purchased three different ones on the here nights) it got real crowded at the inside doors.
The show started 8:20 and the fans were on their feet the entire night. They played some hits and a lot of old cuts and covers they hadn't done in a while. This was the Tom Petty I've listened to for a while and seen a few times on tour. The Beacon is such a more intimate venue to see a show than MSG or other large arenas. Tom seemed quite happy to be playing there. Had I known the shows were going to be that varied I may have seen more and I hope Tom returns to do this again.
