Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Not F1 I know but an awesome weekend at Le Mans for the Moto GP this weekend. Congrats to the Brits, Scott Redding first Moto2 win and Cal Crutchlow, first 2nd step for Moto GP. Not at all bad for a sattelite team Yamaha.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Monaco proved to be quite a crash fest today. Pleased for Nico that he got the win and he drove well on the day given the pressure of Monte and all those restarts. Stopping only once helped, if you discount the red flag period, so less time for team cock ups.

Apart from that it was all rather processional but that's Monte. Sutil probably gets driver of the day with a fine 5th place. Remarkable that he did his overtaking at the Station (it will never be Loewes to me) hairpin. That isn't a recognised passing place really.

Numerous contestants for doughnut of the day. Grosjean seemed to get the whole weekend wrong really. 4 crashes. Oh dear. Max Chilton's blunder that totalled Maldonaldo and stopped the race was fairly dim. But Perez gets the award for me. He justified his attack on Raikkonen (twice) on the basis that Button, Alonso and kimi had all previously chosen NOT to have an accident with him. Sorry but that kind of driving isn't on. Because the stewards chose, inexplicably, to penalise Alonso and not Perez, the Mexican clearly thought Kimi should just allow him through.

He came from way back and had no chance to make the corner, hits Kimi and then blames the Finn. Ludicrous. From when he barged past Button it was clear he was on the way to accident at some point and so it proved. Aggressive driving is OK up to a point, but at Monaco and some other circuits there has to be greater circumspection. Kimi, Alonso, Button and Webber are about the fairest there are at driving standards. No way was that Kimi's fault.

Mclaren need to sit him down and talk to him. I see Grosjean has got a 10 place grid penalty. Perez should get nothing less in my book. He ruined Kimi's race and cost him a packet of points today.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

I actually think that Perez's accident highlighted what is wrong with F1...Money before sport/racing. - Perez was racing today whilst others were on a 72 lap parade, even Vettel said as much himself on the last lap, and yes the only thing that kept from previous accidents was the other drivers giving way, but they reason that they did that was because the track is too narrow for proper side by side racing. - I have ridden a motorbike around those roads and that was hard enough to keep online and hit apex. Jensen even said something along these lines post race.

Monaco is seen as some sort of racing haven, - but the sport has moved on for a lot of circuits like Brands Hatch, but sadly for them they cannot pay Ecclestone as much money. Too many people at Monaco there to be seen and not for the racing as evidenced by the people on the balcony at the Rascasse restaurant today clearly visible not looking at the cars going by...moan over. smile

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

I agree with you 100% about Monaco. It has not been a race for over 30 years as such. Amazing as it may seem Bernie doesn't even get that much money from it. Their hosting charge is negligable compared to Silverstone's. It gets and keeps the race because it is 'the' iconic F1 venue.

Nothing about Moanaco (no spelling error) is relevant to the sport as such. Low speed (comparably), high risk, and high cost when you consider the repairs and the need to develop a special aero package for the place.

For the drivers it is still the ultimate challenge. Probably for them as near as it gets to bike racing where a mistake is seriously punished. But the satisfaction of threading a 750bhp F1 car through those tiny streets quickly is rarely repeated elsewhere. Forget the race, except for the noise and blur of colour, but qualifying when its just balls against the walls is pretty spectacular.

Canada next. Very hard on tyres and brakes. Could be Kimi country.

thanks for that info, - made me do a bit of research, this is interesting:

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

The race is all about the spectacle and social scene where the rich and famous can park their yachts at the front without having to mix with the masses. Qualifying is the race. He who sits pole usually is the inevitable winner. This race is one of the very few F1 that is given national broadcast coverage in the US. It was fun to watch here.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Wow, better deal than I even thought.

I remember when I was last there in the 80's talking with someone from one of the teams then, ATS I thik it was, and he said then that Monte paid nothing, but I thought Bernie had a deal on the advertising. Looks like from that article he even had to forego that!

I would say that must hurt but then again, he can use Monaco as the hook to catch so many fish, because sponsors and promoters go there at his invitation see and feel the glamour and believe they can have that too, in Timbuktu.

So, as that article points out, Monaco is massivley important for F1, even if the race is an irrelevance. Interesting too that even in this unfortunate Tyre saving era, pole and a single lap there is still the most important thing to have.

I see from various articles Kimi now thinks punching Perez is the only way to knock sense into him! I was surprised Button complimented his overtaking moves on himself and Alonso, and Mclaren typically backed their man too. Monaco is a PR excercise and the teams priorties should be both cars get to the finish and get points. Fighting at Monaco is a dumb idea and it will end in the wall. I know that isn't racing, but Monte Carlo isn't racing and Ian's article find explains why.

Perez has to accept to get the respect of his peers (and the room he craves on the track) he needs to play their game their way, at least for a time, or he's gonna get hung out to dry every time.

I see Grosjean blames Ricciardo for their race ending crash. He says he followed him for 61 laps and could see his tyres going off but didn't expect him to brake so early. Whaaaaat? Romain had 4 crashes over the weekend, pretty much all his own fault and then he whacks someone up the back in the braking zone for a chicane. I worry about the mental stability of some of these guys, I really do............

I must be reading the same book too smile.  Good for DC for speaking his mind.  Unfortunately I couldn't watch the GP but gathered Perez and Grosjean had been very naughty boys.  It's been a long time since a race got red-flagged although there's not a lot else can be done at somewhere like Monaco.

Canada's up next!

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Quite enjoyed Canada. Great circuit with some special circumstances concerning car durability.

Irrespective of the teams objections to Mercedes test with Pirelli (what another load of horsesh**) the Italian firm came with some compounds that clearly suited Rbull, and to some extent Mercedes. That Lotus had no real advantage here seemd to bear that out. Vettel drove well and did the business, as did Webber, his race being somewhat compromised by Van de Garde and his wayward ignorance of blue flags.

Sutil had an interesting race. Very competitive, then a wild spin, some tasty dicing down the order before falling foul of the blue flags himself and copping a penalty. Not sure about that one though. His teamate Di Resta did a phenominal job on just one stop so full marks to him.

Hamilton was a little unlucky to lose second after a steady drive but full credit to Alonso for his relentless pursuit. Pre DRS I suspect Hamilton could have kept him back but not now.

As for McLaren this is becoming a season to forget already. I can't fathom a decision to go in such a radical direction on the car design in the last year of the current rules. Especially so when they had arguably the fastest car in 2012. How it has back-fired. They appear to be pretty much nowhere other than occasionally point scoring places. Now Button has even revealed the pace strategy they gave to him in the race was completely out of kilter. I think it is a great shame. They look further away from a WC tilt than ever.

All those who criticised Hamiltons decision to leave at the end of last season should starting eating that humble pie. It was a good decision based on medium to long term prospects for himself and yet now it was the right thing to do for the short term as well!

Nice to see a Williams up there on the grid, but Bottas went pretty much backwards immediately. As with McLaren it seems remarkable that they could design such a dog given that last years package was so competitive. It isn't all down to the tyres!

Net result: Vettel increased his lead. What we need now is a Vettel breakdown and Ferrari having a nice run of 3 wins or so.

Can only hope............

You probably missed it but a Track Marshall was crushed and killed by a crane moving a car off the track. Sad instance for an otherwise good race.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Yes I saw that late on Rick. Unfortunate incident. One of those things that could happen on any industrial work site I guess. A momentary lapse of concentration or breach of good practice, whether accidental or through complacency can have serious consequences. It is a shame that someone volunteering their time should be fatally injured. As Vettel is quoted as saying,  marshalls the world over do an "unsung' unseen" job and without their efforts events couldn't take place, or the costs for holding them would be significantly, if not prohibitively, increased.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

As always at the start of the summer the rumour mill of who goes where begins. Lots of denials, smoke and mirrors.

The market seems to hang on the second Red Bull seat this year. Kimi is the only driver out of contract next year and with the Vettel/Webber fued finally out in the open, and rumours of Mark already having a Porsche sportscar deal, then one of the best drives is up for grabs.

Vettel isn't bothered apparantly who it is and Kimi is famously non-political, although it would be interesting to see how he would react to a 'Multi 21' transgression by Vettel. On the basis that he would like to see Perez punched in the face I suspect Seb wouldn't be trying that too often. Kimi will take the crash every time I should think - if only to make the point.

Maybe a switch to Lotus for Webber would also be good. They want a regular points scorer and Webber will certainly deliver that and wins if the car is good enough. Grosjean only has the rest of this season to impress. I hope he can otherwise F1 will lose potentially one of its fastest if slightly crashprone drivers.

Ricciardo is ready for promotion possibly, but then he will be a clear number 2 in the Massa mould. What about Massa? He only got a year extension to his deal and he is also out of contract. Word is that Nico Hulkenberg could be a likely contender for that seat. Not to challenge Alonso but to get the Scuderia more points and a better chance of a constructor win. Massa just doesn't get enough top six finishes.

So, Kimi to RBull, Webber to sportscars, Hulkenberg to Ferrari or Lotus, Massa back to Sauber (again) Bianchi to Sauber, Sutil to Lotus, Ricciardo and Vergne to RB senior or dropped altogether.

Its all shaping up nicely.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

It's the British Grand Prix this coming weekend.  Doh!  That means I'll have to find a sports or hotel bar in Amsterdam to watch it big_smile .  The Brits will be out in force and hopefully for some of them in competitive and pacy cars.  Silverstone may well suit the McLarens and after their disappointing outing in Canada they're bound to be looking at picking up points.  My money's on Lotus and the Flying Finn.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Ferrari normally go well there and it is time for them to come back and have a dominant weekend. They need to.

Weather good play a role. If it is cold then Ferrari might have an ace because they seem to warm the tyres up quickly, but then again it depends on the compounds. Pirelli have been stumped by the FIA from changing the structure so it could be back to 4 stops again to avoid the delamination problems. In a way I hope so as this might put a spoke in RBull for the weekend.

If its dry we can expect Merc to be well up in qualifying but then nowehere in the race again. Like you Lynn, would be great to see Kimi taking the honours with Sauber having a good run for a change. They and McLaren have had a very poor start.

I think Di Resta could have a good weekend. I expect to see him make Q3 this time out after the teams recent mishaps.

So here's to Kimi and Fernando fighting it out for the win, Lewis on the podium, Vettel binning it (unlikely but you never know) Di Resta and Hulkenberg getting good points, and anything other than Silverstone parking problems being in the news!

Last unrelated point. What a farce this Mercedes / Pirelli test rubbish is/was. Now Ferrari through their anonymous column 'Horse Whisperer' are denegrating the FIA's judgement against Mercedes. There was a breach of the rules by Mercedes, but it was one that could have and should have been picked up and identified by the FIA at the time so there is blame there also.

And who is Ferrari to get on its high prancing horse? Both they and the FIA talk about breaches of the sporting code. Selective memories again here. Is this the same FIA and Ferrari that struck a deal under Max Mosely's tenure to secretly allow Ferrari access to technical development applications from other teams so that they could block them if they felt they would not be able to develop something similar quickly enough? Where was the 'Sporting Code' then?

The FIA, despite its worthy work in vehicle safety, is a motorsport regulatory joke. Self serving and self interest being its primary function. At least Ferrari are racers and I don't blame them for getting whatever advantage they can, but lets keep it real and forget the 'sporting' bit. That went by the by a long time ago...................................

Mercedes have fallen foul of poor communication and regulation management. They have just been naive as have Pirelli, who quite frankly should tell F1 where to go. To have to accept a reprimand from the FIA over this must be as galling as being road side sobriety tested by a drunk police officer.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Congrats to Nico for the win today. Luck plays a big role in sport for both winning and losing. Finally, after gods knows how long Vettel had a mechanical failure. Mercedes deserved the win though I think given that Hamilton was clearly enjoying a solid start when his tyre exploded.

On that theme a new problem for Pirelli, possibly specific to this track. Nevertheless, it shows up the FIA again who forbade Pirelli to change the structure of their tyres after the Merc tyre test scandal.

Pirelli could have insisted a change was required on safety grounds but didn't because of the negative marketing implications. Now they will have to anyway. The tyre failures today effected the outcome of the race, through Hamilton's removal from 1st place to the necessity of a safety car following Vergne's tyre failure.

The best judge of what should happen with the tyres is Pirelli. They should be allowed to do what is required. The tyres are the same for very one. The fact that a certain tyre favours one car over another is what has always happened.

Great to see Webber having such a strong race today, Sutil too. Lots of overtaking and drama too. Good weather too!

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

been party to a tyre farce before in the old Superbike days pre control tyre when Michelin decided who won or lost.... The problem is that whilst I completely agree in the control tyre rule it is near impossible for a tyre manufacturer to make one tyre or a group of exact tyres that suit all cars (or bikes) as each vehicle treats its tyres so differently. The existing tyres suit some cars and/or drivers whilst by the look of it the drivers or cars that are harder on their tyres are at greatest rick.

- my understanding is that some of the teams blocked Pirelli bringing new tyres to Silverstone - so in effect potentially they put their own racing success before human life, - so it is the FIA that HAVE to move in before the next high tyre pressure race. I might be completely wrong (and I hope I am) but I do wonder if it is Red Bull that are blocking things becuse tey seem to get on well with the existing tyre? Fingers crossed for Webber taking points and a championship away from Vettel.
