Topic: Doheny Blues Festival recap

ripped from my FB page:

Great day on the beach. Started with Lynwood Slim and Friends, good band and Lynwood Slim is a great blues singer, then moved on to Joanne Shaw Taylor on the Sailor Jerry stage. I heard at least 4 marriage proposals for this extraordinary young guitarist/singer. "Manic Depression" was the highlight since I don't know much of her own material, but she rocks in every blues style. Back to the main stage for the Jimmy Vaughn with Lou Ann Barton. The best of Texas blues with Lou Ann singing but a heart felt "Six Strings Down" was the highlight for me. I saw SRV with Jimmy and The Fabulous Tbirds a few months before those six strings went down a couple of blocks from the beach and this is the first time I saw Jimmy since. The Tedeschi Trucks Band took over the main stage with a blistering set. Susan Tedeschi's voice has gotten stronger since their last Doheny appearance 2 years ago and she tore up "the Sky is Crying", way at the top of my SRV list. The day closed out with Ben Harper and Charlie Musslewhite, lots of echoes of John Mayall in their set but the highlight for me was the closer, "When the Levee Breaks". Their cover of the Led Zep cover was awesome and these guys could play it, unlike Led Zep who dropped it from their set because they couldn't recreate all the studio tricks recording it. All in all a great day. Tomorrow promises to be better with Bonamassa and Thorogood!

Added: RickB and GroovyHoovie and I played street team for Joe, but Rick won that, selling 5 JB CDs just hanging out at the merch stand!

Re: Doheny Blues Festival recap

What a fantastic day. Perfect sunny mid 70's and great music all day. Here's a clip of Joanne's Manic Depression. She had the crowd buzzing. A player standing next to me just was shaking his head saying "I never heard any woman play like that!"

Re: Doheny Blues Festival recap

A fab day, perfect weather again, Tal and Arlan saw my RCFP tee and gave me the high sign while they were setting up. Short set list.
Slow Train
Dust Bowl
So It's Like That
Midnight Blues
Who's Been Talking
Django
Mountain Time
Ballad of John Henry
Sloe Gin
Just Got Paid.
Joe gave a sort talk, said it was the first time back in 8 years (it was 5 really) He said this was the last stop on the Spring Tour and there was no tomorrow, so they were going to play like there was no tomorrow. They DID! One funny moment when Joe was playing Ballad Of John Henry and walked over to play the Theramin, but there was no Theramin. lol  He gave Carmine a shrug and funny look and kinda shuffled across the stage.
We all set up right in front of the stage with our blankets and had spots on the rail for the show. Life is good in Cali. Arlan  handed me the set list, then he came out and gave some hugs. smile
Take a breather and well earned rest Joe. The tour was a huge success by all accounts, including ours out here at Doheney.

Jim Suhler came over and watched the set from the side stage. George Thorogood was not what we wanted to hear after the great music all day and Jim was looking like he'd rather be somewhere else so I never got a chance to say hi since we left early.

edit: Toast of the Coast was an incredible show. Slide heaven and just music that made you move. They are touring and are a must see act if they come near. I will be putting up vids from their show. A huge wall of sound from some extremely gifted musicians!

Midnight Blues, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7nsiU6sdAs
Joe set up right in front of  our group of BonaNation faithful on the rail at center left stage most of the show and I got the first 5 songs before one security fella decided that those of us that had been taping for the entire weekend should now stop, making a big stink when we objected. Oh well, the other 6 of his companions in the photo pit just looked away. The pro photo crew were even courteous while we shot, ducking to not obstruct us when passing back and forth. I stopped and enjoyed Joe at his best,

Re: Doheny Blues Festival recap

Nice video Rick. Looks so different with trees and sky in the background when you're so used to it being really dark with brightly colored lights. It sounds like you got a nice bunch of songs. Too bad about the security, gosh they can be a pain everywhere you go. It's cool Joe hovered over in your area while playing, it seems he gravitates towards familiar faces smile. Looking forward to seeing the other ones you got.

Except the videographers. The boss guy made it a point to cross back and forth from his gear to one of his staffs' needlessly, and standing all the way.

+1 on Toast of the Coast. Loved Sonny Landreth's swamp rock and its decades since I saw Marcia Ball at Antone's and she rocks the keyboard and vocals. Terrance Simien seems like the guy you want to head out to a bar with after the show if you want to smile all night, and Cindy Cashdollar doesn't step out front that much but as that one guy said..she knows how to use all 16 strings on that steel guitar!

As far as George goes...you heard three songs before you left, so you heard em all...Id be surprised if George even knows more than 3 chord progressions!. They're an entertaining enough band, especially when George lets Jim Suhler come out from the shadows, which isn't often enough, but the "Pay me homage" posing gets wearing quickly. The show hasn't changed all that much since his days grinding up and down the East Coast....louder and a video backdrop, mostly saying "hooray for George" in one way or another.  Still hard for a local to leave early though, it was too nice a night and too great a weekend to cut it short!

(Email the group shot when you can!)

Oh we love Sonny and TTB plus Joe? Sounds great, we're doing a few festivals in PA and VT plus some outdoor venues.  Keep those vids and pics coming!

Im uploading a decent "Slow Train" unedited. Tonight Ill synch the better audio. Couple of flashes/dropouts because I couldn't resist switching lenses when Joe got directly in front of me. I'll steal some of Ricks video to correct that.

And you must have passed on my message...."So Its Like That" was played, mostly right in front of me!

SILT was my favorite of the set. Group foto's coming. After the guy shut the vidshoot down I got a lot of snaps of the band. That vid boss didn't bother me at all, that little extension kept the view high enough. Some of the snapshots came out pretty nice. It was very nice spending the weekend with good pals. You and Vik Rock! Paul got a good breaking-in on the ways of the hardcore. lol
