Topic: Doheny Blues Festival recap
ripped from my FB page:
Great day on the beach. Started with Lynwood Slim and Friends, good band and Lynwood Slim is a great blues singer, then moved on to Joanne Shaw Taylor on the Sailor Jerry stage. I heard at least 4 marriage proposals for this extraordinary young guitarist/singer. "Manic Depression" was the highlight since I don't know much of her own material, but she rocks in every blues style. Back to the main stage for the Jimmy Vaughn with Lou Ann Barton. The best of Texas blues with Lou Ann singing but a heart felt "Six Strings Down" was the highlight for me. I saw SRV with Jimmy and The Fabulous Tbirds a few months before those six strings went down a couple of blocks from the beach and this is the first time I saw Jimmy since. The Tedeschi Trucks Band took over the main stage with a blistering set. Susan Tedeschi's voice has gotten stronger since their last Doheny appearance 2 years ago and she tore up "the Sky is Crying", way at the top of my SRV list. The day closed out with Ben Harper and Charlie Musslewhite, lots of echoes of John Mayall in their set but the highlight for me was the closer, "When the Levee Breaks". Their cover of the Led Zep cover was awesome and these guys could play it, unlike Led Zep who dropped it from their set because they couldn't recreate all the studio tricks recording it. All in all a great day. Tomorrow promises to be better with Bonamassa and Thorogood!
Added: RickB and GroovyHoovie and I played street team for Joe, but Rick won that, selling 5 JB CDs just hanging out at the merch stand!
