Topic: Beacon Theater 5/17/13

Really nice show tonight, but somewhat frustrating where we were sitting. Earl Slick played on two songs Further On Up the Road and Blues Deluxe

Seagull
Jelly Roll
Jockey Full of Bourbon
Athens to Athens
Woke Up Dreaming
Slow Train
Dust Bowl
Dislocated Boy
Driving Towards the Daylight
Who's Been Talking
Django
Mountain Time
Further On Up the Road w/Earl Slick
Blues Deluxe w/Earl Slick
Ballad of John Henry
Sloe Gin
Just Got Paid

Excellent show, Joe was in top form and Arlan was on fire. We saw both at the bus after the show. Joe appeared very briefly just to sign a few people's things. He saw us and asked "How'd the tapes come out?" we told him we'd see him tomorrow at the meet and greet and give him his copies then. Arlan spent a little more time with us. We told him how we thought he had been on fire tonight. And he said "Yeah, I was really feeling the vibe" Talked a little about Beth and he is really excited about the upcoming shows with her.

On another note, we had the bad luck of sitting right next to a guy who kept screaming JOEY B at the top of his lungs. At one point i was like dude, you just screamed that right in my ear, and he was like, no I didn't and I said of course you did, your mouth is only about 6 inches from my ear. He did stop after that but continued to talk loudly to his friend the whole time. Why do they come if they are going to talk the whole time ?! Then a security guard told me I couldn't do any video. I told him Joe allowed it, but he wouldn't listen and kept shining his light on me until I put the camera away. And of course this happened right when Earl Slick was playing. I did try and sneak some of it, but I don't know how good it will be since my fingers might be over the mics. Quite frustrating to say the least. From what others said, the security were being tough with a lot of people. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Edit : totally forgot to mention that Joe was wearing the white suit again. When he came on stage he said "It's friday night in New York City, I'll wear my best Las Vegas suit!"

Thanks, Fine Folks!  Looks like a few insertions and deletions, but essentially closely resembling night #1.

I have a tremendous idea (maybe? Maybe not! lol) for defeating the SS (Security Shutdown) situation for the future...not to be disclosed here and now for security of experimental trial runs of it (may require NSA style intense background checks to be part of implemeting, to avoid ruining it if it went off very well lol).

Re: Joey B types... I have a tremendous idea (again, maybe? Maybe not! lol) for something although it may be only nominally effective due to inability to either sober anyone up or diffuse uncontrollable fits of exhuberance (some of those are precious as it is, if they are not ridiculously disruptive wink big_smile).

Looking for words towards more on this night!

...and indeed, we shall see what tomorrow Bring__eth!!

Re: Beacon Theater 5/17/13

Really great show tonight. I brought 2 friends to be BonaBaptized and one of them is a musician (does his own stuff and plays with a Pink Floyd cover band). He was amazed. We were in the 6th row.

I've complained about Joe being too predictable in the past and I have to say today he threw out a lot of stuff that seemed really new and fresh...to the same old songs, although there were some songs I didn't know, which is odd...so not sure if they were ones I just didn't remember or they were new or what...I have every album, so have to go back and figure it out. Or maybe he just did something new to them.

There was one song and I have no clue which one it was......'Who's been talking' maybe? I don't know that one that I know of----have to look it up and see if I do...but he did this amazing amazing guitar jam and these amazing crescendos it was spectacular---serious crescendos..... I had definitely never heard this before in 15+ concerts.

I really liked Dislocated Boy, don't think I"ve heard that one live either before.

He messed up the words to Sloe Gin again and didn't do the amazing guitar solos he usually does to that--and he left out that GREAT PART--that guitary twangy thing he does after "I've been shot down over stormy seas"...I was a little disappointed as I live for that little bit.

We also didn't get the psychedelic whangy sound from Communication Breakdown. But I'm getting nitpicky...Driving towards daylight was amazing, amazing amazing jam in the middle of John Henry...

Also he did lots of amazing quiet guitar stuff today--a lot more than usual and a lot of it new. IT was great. (Although a bunch of idiiot men int he audience kept yelling out and could not shut their traps! Can they not appreciate a special moment of intimacy and they have to destroy it for everyone? )

and weird, my friend, was so excited to see Earl Slick because ironically the very first guitar he ever bought was apparently one that had been custom made for Earl Slick. So, a funny coincidence. I"d personally never heard of the guy, but then I don't have huge knowledge of all the players in all the old bands. Last year at the Beacon, I didn't know who those guys were that he brought out (and got yelled at on here a bit for not knowing who they were)

Is Beth Hart def. going on tomorrow? I'm pretty bummed I"m not going if so. Should be amazing.

Joe also did something different with Woke Up Dreaming...and...was it Athens to Athens? I don't think I'd heard that one before but he did some fancy NEW guitar stuff on that too...so that was all good---fresh. Thank you Joe!

Re: Beacon Theater 5/17/13

One more thing--what was up with the Beacon. We arrived at 10 to 8 and there were 2 lines of literally 200-300 people  waiting to get in. Knowing he starts at 8, we all thought--surely, this jam, he will start late. I finally got to the front of the line at 8:05pm I think and by the time I got in Joe had started...someone messed up at the Beacon...why were hundreds of people outside. EVERYONE had tickets in their hands. The guy at the front told me that 'everyone showed up at the same time' Very odd, I've NEVER seen that happen at the Beacon before. The line at 7:50 was down the block to 74th. I missed most of the first song because of it.

Re: Beacon Theater 5/17/13

Well, I was just previewing Blues Deluxe on the camera and it looks pretty darn good considering I was holding it between my knees with my hands covering the screen so the security guard wouldn't see the light. The first few minutes are missing as I had to get up the courage to operate covertly, but I believe the best is there. Got 6 min of 9 min song. Earl Slick did an incredible job on the solo. It is currently uploading and will be available in probably 1 1/2 hours. Unfortunately I have the first bit of Crossroads and the middle part. That was when security was first giving me trouble and I had to stop and try and do it more secretly. It gives you a taste of what it was like. Really nice jam back and forth between Earl and Joe that I had to unfortunately stop too soon.

Hi Tica, yes, something seems amiss with the ticket-takers.  Annoying/maddening for sure!

Many fans have learned to arrive as soon as the doors open to avoid the typical last minute rush, also to take opportunities to find more Bonabuddies to say hi to, and scope out the merch.  But trouble comes once again when you're obediently sitting in your seats in plenty of time and tons of people, to whom a start time means nothing and who evidently don't have ANY other chance to get an alcoholic beverage except waiting in the ridiculously long theater bar line, crowd in and fill the aisles so you can't see the stage for the first 20 minutes.  Argggggg.

Re: Beacon Theater 5/17/13

We got an email, maybe from ticketmaster, telling us to arrive early because there would be heightened security. They were checking bags and wanding people. If people wait till the last minute then long lines will ensue if they are doing security checks. Knowing that Joe is always incredibly punctual, it is best to arrive early.

Arrive even earlier than early tomorrow (tonight) then!  If the doors are open, drinks are in the house, you could be catching some of those missed connections, or just simple conversations are content on not missing any content...

Re: Beacon Theater 5/17/13

I just got in from the show tonight at the Beacon. Let me tell you it was, fantastic! I've had tickets for tomorrow's show for months now but decided an hour and a half before tonights show to make the trek into the city and catch tonight's show as well. I am so glad I was able to get a good ticket at the last minute! This is the third time I've seen Joe and I could tell that he had made some changes to the way him and the band play. The songs aren't as set in stone as they used to be and the band jams a lot more. I thought this made what was already gonna be an amazing show even better. Earl Slick was also a great guest and their solos on Further on Up the Road and Blues Deluxe were superb.

I'm gonna put my videos up on youtube as soon as possible. I just have to import them onto it which may take a while. My account is GuitaristEric if you wanna check them out. I'll also put up a link to my facebook album for the pictures when they're up! Also, a few of my best pictures will go up on the Joe Bonamassa Instagram (@Joebonamassafans) I can't wait for tomorrows show and the Meet and Greet! Maybe I'll catch some of you there!

Check out the Joe Bonamassa Instagram! Joebonamassafans is updated daily with awesome pictures and I'll upload any pictures you guys email me @ joebonamassafans@gmail.com

Re: Beacon Theater 5/17/13

Here's the "Blues Deluxe" with Earl Slick. Be patient for the first 20 seconds. It all gets straightened out.

Re: Beacon Theater 5/17/13

So I really would love to know what this song I didn't know or didn't remember was where there were these amazing crescendos...and yes, egettler--lots more jams it felt like! I personally don't like the faster blues numbers...so if he sticks a long guitar jam in there then I like it. I wish Joe would go all rock and roll....(No, have not seen BCC yet, only came thru here once and it was in NJ and I couldn't get anyone to go with me)...

oh and the friend I was with said 'Whitesnake' during the bit after Just Got Paid and Led Zeppelin....I don't know them, but I guess he played a bit from there--what else is in there besides Zep?  I like when he throws in bits of other songs--one time he threw in Framptom's Do You Feel Like We Do, out of the blue, that was awesome.

Re: Beacon Theater 5/17/13

Anyone have an extra ticket for tonight? Only thing is, I paid $143 on stubhub for last night, not sure I can do that again. Would love to see BEth Hart. Wanted to see her at City Winery but couldnt get anyone to go with me last minute when I realized I could get tics on Craigs List.

Re: Beacon Theater 5/17/13

Again, wonderful set list. Surprised to see Earl slick.  Saw him with David Bowie back in the day. Man he can still play! What type of guitar was he using. Sounded great.  Hope some one clues the security folks in about Joe,s filming policy.  Joe you are just sounding so good!

Re: Beacon Theater 5/17/13

I know sometimes you get to the venue when you can manage it.  Not a good thing to assume you'll just stroll on in, whenever you arrive.  I'll take heightened security over the potential alternatives (while hoping they never ever happen).

Sold out shows and crowds for a Joe concert...nobody should be surprised by that.  And we should all be thrilled.  Doesn't mean everyone who shows up after you did was trying to be rude and harsh your show mellow.  What, are we going to have to dictate that everybody be in their seat by a certain time, or that Joe has to build in intermissions to accommodate seating of late arrivals?!?!?!  This ain't broadway, people.

@Tica...I wasn't at the show, but Joe's been mixing in a little Mule, and the Whitesnake your friend noticed, and even whipped out a little Stratus (Billy Cobham tune that he's a known fan of), at the May 1 show in Chicago.  You never know what you might get, but that's probably close.

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.

Did you get a good video of Further On Up the Road? Mine got all screwed up because of the security guy. Please post a link to it here if you did.

I think the song you're referring to is Who's Been Talking. It has been appearing in the setlists for over the past year since it is on "Driving Towards the Daylight"

It could be a crowd of people who don't realize 8 means 8 with Joe. I go in early as well to avoid any crowd rush.

Re: Beacon Theater 5/17/13

I forgot to mention how wonderful it was to meet some of the European contingency before the show. Marlies (Bonapostle) from Hamburg, Germany, Oetzi and his wife from Lucerne, Switzerland and her brother who is currently living in Florida. Nice to know we are not the only crazy ones who travel the world to see Joe smile
