Topic: stockpiling music

Well I've been around for a few years and have a lot of music in various formats,cd,vinyl,cassette,mp3.I know most here arre music nuts like myself.I think Ive slowed down on new purchases over the last couple years.I was curious on how many new "albums" are being bought on a monthly basis on average.I used to probly get 2-4 new ones a month.I would say I have cut that in half.
Second part is how do you rotate you collection.I know there are a lot of cd's that I haven't listened to in a long time.Others seem to get pulled out to play in maybe 2-3 month intervals. Then there are the ones that never were woth getting in the first place because they only got a few plays and that was it.
Third part question. How do you have time to listen to a large amount of music. For me I have to drive around all day so I have a lot of time to listen to music. If I dint have the kind of job I have.I don't know that I would have nearly as much of a music collection.

Re: stockpiling music

Purchase maybe 1 CD per month these days.  It's pathetic.

My iTunes library is around 43,000 songs.  So I load as many as I can fit on my 160GB iPod Classic.  I rarely play the CDs ever anymore.  Although I never buy music in digital only.  Buy, rip to iTunes, load to iPod, file CD on the shelves.

Listen to my iPod at work a lot.  Usually on random song shuffle.  Also like to listen when on he computer or reading.  Also have a 32GB USB stick that I play in my car.  Again, mostly random shuffle.

Gibson 60th Anniversary 1959 Les Paul Reissue, Gibson LP Standard Faded CSB, Gibson Gary Moore LP Standard, Epi Joe Bonamassa GT LP, Epi Zakk Wylde LP, Dean Michael Schenker Flying V, Jackson Randy Rhoads V, ESP/LTD George Lynch Kamikaze, EVH Striped Series R/B/W, Fender/Squire John 5 Telecaster, Fender Joe Strummer Relic Telecaster

Re: stockpiling music

I would say that probably 75-80 percent of my music purchases these days are digital-only. Storing physical CDs just got overwhelming, so now I only buy physicals if I have a special reason for doing so...

I make a lot of iTunes playlists to suit my various moods, and there's always at least one that hits the spot no matter how I'm feeling...

I lost virtually my entire CD collection in a flood a few years ago, so my iTunes doesn't have nearly so much music as I once owned (the computer that had the ripped versions of the CDs was lost, too). I'm gradually rebuilding the collection, but now that I'm "retired" I need to be a bit more judicious with my $ than I used to be...

Mostly digital as well that go on a 160 gig iPod (the largest currently made),  mostly "classic" albums and those newly put out by artists near and dear do I buy on vinyl since it costs more. I've got a bunch of live shows on my iPod as well.

rather would have the real thing myself.....in my hands instead of the digital thing

Re: stockpiling music

The old argument returns.....

I rarely buy cds due to the dwindling availability of 'em where I live.  Many can't even be ordered if I wanted one to begin with.  I'm not the purist I once was and rarely play my old stereo which cost me dearly back in the day.  I listen to my 160 gig iPod classic too and prefer playlists that suit my fancy.  Listening on shuffle is a cool way to listen to your library as I sometimes can't remember the songs.

Re: stockpiling music

Loaded all of my CD and digital music to my  320G 'Brennan' and I am presently digitizing all my vinyl to upload on to it as well.

I've backed it up so at least if the Brennan goes down I can reboot without the hassle of loading all the music again.

I love this thing as it has reintroduced me to such much music that I just never got to play anymore. The only hassle with it is that I keep having to get up and check out who it is that I am hearing as I have forgotten who the artist is! So many times I stand there going 'Oh yeah'.

The Brennan is almost permanently on random shuffle even though I can select by track, album, artist whatever. I love the spontaneity of it. I had almost stopped listening to music at home as I could never make up my mind what I wanted to hear. I previously used the mp3 and laptop in the same way, but the Brennans capacity and ease of use with the remote is so much more practical.

Purchase wise I go in fits and starts, but I would say I am still purchasing 2 or 3 things per month. I'm trying to keep to a 30 Euro limit per month which given the competitive pricing of some CD's means you can get a reasonable amount of pleasure from 30 euros. I just got Slash's new CD for 8 euros and Richard Thompsons Live 2012 DVD for 12 euros so maybe my 10 euro saving from March can be carried over!

Re: stockpiling music

IT amazes me that a genre, blues and bues rock has so many great bands and artists.Given that it not a mainstream form of music anymore. You wouldn't think there would be enough people to support as many artists as there are.I think it  is great that there is so much to choose from.
