Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Have to agree, a brilliant race to end a brilliant season. Looking back at the season, several drivers were taken out, and several more had mechanical defects throughout the season. The winner in the end always needs luck at some point. Vettels just happened to be being fortunately enough to be nable to carry on after not one, but two impacts. How often does that happen? I too was rooting for Alonso because he has wrestled with an obviously inferior car throughout the season. Hopefully Ferrari can return to an even playing field with the likes of McClaren, Red Bull and to some extent Renault next year. Boredom comes from having one dominant car, something all drivers dream for, but not good for the viewing public.
Just one more thing, although overshadowed this by this Sundays events, what an immaculate driving weekend from Button, in the worst conditions possible, and for both Hamilton and Hulkenburg, caught out by the conditions. Congrats to Vettell and the future is bright for next year which can't come quick enough.

Now if only Moto GP can get back to it's rivetting best we will all be happy. big_smile big_smile big_smile big_smile

I quite enjoyed this. Just a 4 minute or so BBc clip. DC and Adrian Newey trying out 2 of his pieces of work at Silverstone. The 88/89 Leyton House and an RB5 from 2009.

Newey is quite fearless in a racing car and that has been well documented in the past.

I think it is Christian Horner that asks him at the end..."...were you flat through Woodcote? ".

"Oh yes, its a bit like a fairground ride..." says Newey blithely. Cue Horner ageing several years.

Good stuff seeing the man IN his machines. I like his quip about the space in the cockpit........."plenty of room, don't know what they are complaining about..........".

As Coulthard remarks 2 hours around Monaco in the cramped 88 wouldn't have been so much fun. Good job Ivan Capelli was a small 'un!

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Great result in Melbourne for Kimi!  What a comeback he's having having taken a couple of years off to focus on rallying. Last season he started off, not surprisingly, a little lacklustre and wasn't quite race shape, but given a year back in F1 and he's flying and focused.  Good fillip too for Team Lotus.

Ferrari are looking good and really strong.  Lewis seems to have found his groove with Mercedes and it it hadn't been for tyres which went off towards the end of the race might have been a stronger contender for a podium.  McLaren didn't get the best of starts to the season and although the boys from Red Bull were, on paper, supposed to be higher placed they could only manage 3 and 6 this weekend.  But there's plenty of racing to come and as I always say you can't judge the season by the first race of the calendar.

Team of the day for me were Force India.  This Indian-owned team has stealthily and steadily been producing some solid results over the past few seasons.  Backed with Mercedes engines and two young drivers they are looking good for consistent results this year.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

I'm not one of those who dislike Vettel but he can be gratingly arrogant sometimes.
Just watching the coverage live and to hear him demand the team get Webber out of the way is poor sportsmanship.

he had only just dropped below a second behind Webber for the first time, plus he has DRS anyway to get by, but within a lap Webber had pulled out a second on him again. Webber was and is actually following the teams lap times instructions.

He does himself no favours speaking out like this. He should let his driving speak for itself. It's no wonder people like to see him lose.

Shame about Alonso though.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

I had no idea when I was writing my first post the story would play out so. Vettel was clearly, as the Germans would say 'verarscht', that he should stay behind Webber. Mark could have driven as fast but the team wanted to get both cars to the finish. Webbers strategy and driving had put him in the pound seats and his reward should have been a victory. When you are not racing anyone else it makes sense to hold station.

Unfortunately Vettel is becoming one of the worst kind of 'pothunters'. Seeking to break every record is his quest for racing immortality. Sadly he is employing Schumachers worst tactics to achieve it.

I actually like the guy and his personality but this overbearing need to be nr. 1, marks out an immaturity that I suppose given his age we should accept, but not when you are racing open wheel cars at nearly 200mph.

His pass on Webber once again demanded that Webber should accommodate him. 'Give me room or we crash', as Senna used to. Webber had no reason to expect Vettel would pass given the team orders in place.

Sorry, but a 3 time world champion should know better. Rosberg didn't like his instructions either and whilst I understand that that's the way it is, Mercedes pay the bills and if that's what they want so be it. I would prefer Hamilton had heard the discussion and given up the place to Nico. But again, they were only fighting themselves. Tough calls, but they have to be made. Both RBull and Mercedes made them but one arrogant driver didn't play the game.

Vettel has apologised, but that is pretty hollow. He has the victory and the points and that, above all, is what he wanted. He says 'move on' but then he would wouldn't he?

If I was Webber I would take a victory and then quit in the press conference. He gets repeatedly shat on and he doesn't deserve it. He will never be able to win the championship at RBull and most times will have to support Vettels ambition even though he can beat the guy fairly.

The whole episode detracts from what was, again, an interesting race. Mercedes seem to have some pace after all, and McLaren looked better. Buttons efforts deserved something better than a bungled pit stop again. Force India too must be crying in their beer. What a disaster. 2 quick cars with a good strategy totally screwed as a result of the equipment they were using for the wheel changes. I thought most teams had the heat of Sepang sussed out now. Just goes to show.

Lots of bungles throughout the race really. Maybe they are all rusty. Lewis has to take top spot though for his brief stop to say hello to the McLaren guys. Nice moment.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

with F1 back on our screens at the weekend and the events of Malaysia with 2 drivers up against each other in more ways than one this 30 minute radio programme from the BBC is a timely reminder of what respect between drivers is all about.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01rfy5f

The programme showcases THAT incredible season of 1976 and the titanic battle between Lauda and Hunt. That incredible lsummer I took my annual work leave in numerous long weekends and visited Monaco, The 'Ring, Zandvoort and Monza, as well as my home GP at Brands Hatch. It remains my favourite era of F1. Huge tyres, powerful cars with rustic early aerodynamics and drivers with insane courage and talent in equal measure.

Yes, it was all about Lauda and Hunt that year but I remember following the other guys as well. The wonders they performed in uncompetitive and outdated machinery. Brett Lunger, Guy Edwards, Art Merzario, Harald Ertl, Pescarolo, Bob Evans, Hans Stuck, Loris Kessel, Vittorio Brambilla et al. Indeed, if it hadn't been for the first 4 in that short list Lauda wouldn't be alive today. They were the ones first on the scene, stepped into the flames and pulled him from the burning wreckage.

Vettel should reflect on that sort of thing next time he doesn't "think about what he was doing".

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Great link Mike. What a brilliant way to use the holiday time that was. My favorite time in F1 as well. Drivers today have little risk of being burnt alive. Lauda's face and hands after recovery should give all pause to reflect on how far driver safety has come.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

If you liked that one Rick take a look at this. 20 minutes or so long.

One of my personal heroes, David Purley, is featured for a short film for the children's programme 'Go with Noakes'. As it was for kids the technical aspects are fairly rudimentally explained but for all that I think it is an interesting film.

Purley himself is totally self-effacing and patient in his interviews as he prepares to build and race his new F5000 car at what was then in 1975 a very scary Oulton Park circuit.

F5000 then was a great 'big banger' series, but it was still shocking to be reminded of how basic it was back then. I mean, just look at the car preparation on the grass under an awning next to the transporter. A far cry from how a Formula Ford team would go racing today.

Purley was quite a character. At a time when I had my own racing ambitions I was lucky enough to get a circuit ride with him in a Chevron sports car. This was after he had returned to racing after his horror F1 smash at Silverstone in 1977.

I shall be eternally grateful to him for that as he dispelled the foolish notions that I, as a young man of 22, had about racing himself. In that short but extremely rapid 4 lap circuit ride he displayed a talent of which I could only dream and convinced me that it would better for it stay that way.

His death in 1985 flying his own stunt plane was a bitter blow. Some of these guys just have to live life on the edge I guess. Thats what makes them different from the rest of us.

Have a look, see what you think. The good old days................Hmmmm. I suppose it was of its time. A stepping stone to get to where we are today.

Having neglected this topic for the past couple of races (nothing wrong with the races, just not enough time) it's time to get the adrenalin pumping again for this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix.  Can anyone beat Fernando Alonso on home turf?

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Answer Lynn was a resounding no!

When he has the car he wants under him he is unbeatable, and what a car he had. Obviously suited to the track and conditions at the weekend. Look at Massa's result, plus he had problems. Without them he could have been second. Very good result.

All the twittering on the Beebs live internet reporting was critical of the tyre situation and I have to say, although I have been unsure what to make of it, there is no sense in having drivers like Hamilton totally hobbled by them. Now I know that if Ferrari and the others can build a car that can be adapted to deal with them, then why can't Mercedes?

I got no answer to that, and clearly Mercedes have failed once again to overcome an ineherent trait in the design formula. The cars areodynamic bias to the rear causes them to over use the tyres in race trim. Given the fragility of this years tyres that design failing is being, on occasion cruelly exposed. To have both cars on the front row on Saturday and be sure in the knowledge they would fall down the order is just plain daft.

At least Pirelli are acknowledging that 4 pitstops as a strategy is just too many and they have to do something to make them more durable.

I still think the Red Bull is probably potentially the fastest car out there, but at the moment Ferrari are doing a cracking job. Keep it up! Alonso deserves their very best. This window of opportunity won't last. If Pirelli make the tyres more durable and RBull crack the perfromance code to them and can use aero advantage they probably have then Vettel will be off and running again.

Anyway, here's to Kimi sticking on pole in Monaco and winning. If they can't happen then I'll be happy to see either an Alonso or Massa vistory.

I have to say I dislike races being won through tyre changes and can't see the point of there being any racing if teams are telling their drivers to go easy on the tyres.  Am I right in thinking that it was Bernie who specifically asked Pirelli to come up with a compound which didn't last so long, to make it more interesting for the fans?

You really had to feel for Hamilton and Rosberg last weekend.  First and second on the grid only for them to go rapidly backwards. When Lewis complained on the team radio that he'd been overtaken by a Williams, you had to cringe a little.  Is it simply bad design or do they need a Michael Schumacher lesson in setting up a car in race trim?

But what about the flying Finn, Kimi Raikkonen?  Second AGAIN and now just four points behind Vettel.  He's my bet for a win in Monaco.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

It is bad design Lynn, or failed design theory. These cars are in the 5th year of the current development cycle and the 2013 W04 has design DNA from Jenson Buttons Brawn from 2009.

That wasn't a bad car cöearly as it won the world championship, but the design was based around the trick floor that Brawn used. Over the course of 2009 other teams caught up and overtook Brawn but they hung to claim both championships.

As a result the trick floor was effectively outlawed for 2010 but Mercedes nee Brawn possibly retained some of the rear end characteristics of a car that had been so successful. Big mistake. They have had problems with acute tyre wear ever since and the solutions they have used in other areas 'F-duct' amd the like have tended to band aid over the problem.

New rules next year, new engines et al. They have a chance to start again and they need to bin the current philosphy. It will probably be dumped with Ross Brawn I daresay. A Toyota level of underachievement will not be countenanced at Mercedes any more.

So yeah, I felt a little for Hamilton and Rosberg but at the end of the day, Ferrari, RBull and Lotus are doing a much better job. In fact Lotus, considering what they spend compared to the other two must be the most effective team in F1 just now.

The top drivers are lamenting that Mercedes will probably be on the front row in Monaco which means it will be VERY difficult to get past them so maybe a Merc victory is on, especially as Pirelli are making some limited changes.

As for Pirelli, yes they were commanded/instructed to develop limited life tyres to make the racing more unpredictable ( and probably hamper Red Bull - same thing really). As to whether it was actually Bernie I'm not sure. The F1 Technical Working Group approved the idea so the blame would lie with the teams.

I don't think Bernie worries too much about tyres. Money yes, and as long as the viewing figures are good he is happy. As for the teams complaining about the situation. well he has heard all that before.
