You don’t want to just solo and riff all over the top of the track. Remember to keep your performance rooted in the blues and be sure that your guitar part complements and works within the context of the song.
Anyone can go solo crazy!
I agree with the sentiment of working within the context of the song, but mostly because it's extremely difficult to keep a "solo" interesting for 5 minutes. Very, very few guitarists can do that. Hendrix's instrumental take on "Born Under a Bad Sign" is the one example I can think of off the top of my head. Even guys "known" for soloing - Vai, Yngwie, Warren Haynes, Santana - they play long solos, but in the context of a song, even if it's an insrumetnal. There's a defined and recognizable verse/chorus or AABA type structure.
Anyways, that's my take on it. I'm planning on playing off the vocal melody for the chorus in order to keep some connection with the original, with some embellishment, a unique-but-still-fits-the-mood-of-the-song melody for the verses, and a traditional solo and jammy outtro. We'll see how that works once I start recording. I'm looking at it like composing a new instrumental, except the structure of the song, rhythm and harmony, and most of the instruments are already finished.
