Re: Guitar Center Blues Masters featuring Joe Bonamassa Contest

I think it would be super cool if more people posted links to their entries (or non-entries for that matter) in this thread. I'd love to see what other people are doing. I may not enter the contest, but I'm planning to do an interpretation as I play many of these songs in my band.

As soon as I figure out my video recording situation I'll post a few vids. I'm interested in general feedback as well.

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Re: Guitar Center Blues Masters featuring Joe Bonamassa Contest

Figured I'd let every one check my entry out.. I tried to Keep the song a song and not go nuts just soloing over the whole thing so I came up with some stuff to try to complement it instead and put solo's where I  they should be.  Hope you all enjoy it..

Re: Guitar Center Blues Masters featuring Joe Bonamassa Contest

WHY is almost everyone just going solo crazy ? It says right in the track DL section.

You don’t want to just solo and riff all over the top of the track. Remember to keep your performance rooted in the blues and be sure that your guitar part complements and works within the context of the song.

Anyone can go solo crazy!

Re: Guitar Center Blues Masters featuring Joe Bonamassa Contest

Jim, I don't think it really matters if you just solo over the song. The ways different people will try to make the song their own varies by each person. I just did not want to do that I could've very easily done that but chose not to. I don't see anything wrong with the entries where that has been done.

Re: Guitar Center Blues Masters featuring Joe Bonamassa Contest

moguitar200 very impressive and like your interpretation of the song. Agree with your approach and complimented it well. Good luck.

Nice job!  That's the tune I'm working on, too.  Still figuring out exactly what I'm going to do for each section (and trying to let my tendinitis heal as much as possible before playing too much).

I agree with the sentiment of working within the context of the song, but mostly because it's extremely difficult to keep a "solo" interesting for 5 minutes.  Very, very few guitarists can do that.  Hendrix's instrumental take on "Born Under a Bad Sign" is the one example I can think of off the top of my head.  Even guys "known" for soloing - Vai, Yngwie, Warren Haynes, Santana - they play long solos, but in the context of a song, even if it's an insrumetnal.  There's a defined and recognizable verse/chorus or AABA type structure.

Anyways, that's my take on it.  I'm planning on playing off the vocal melody for the chorus in order to keep some connection with the original, with some embellishment, a unique-but-still-fits-the-mood-of-the-song melody for the verses, and a traditional solo and jammy outtro.  We'll see how that works once I start recording.  I'm looking at it like composing a new instrumental, except the structure of the song, rhythm and harmony, and most of the instruments are already finished.

lots of good entry's (so far)... still like I and other's said soloing for a long song is VERY hard!

Re: Guitar Center Blues Masters featuring Joe Bonamassa Contest

Hey guys here's my take on Joe's song dust bowl. I am honestly ashamed to say that I never listened to the song before I recorded this but I just loved the western showdown feel of the track. This was all improvised on the spot after listening to the track one time. I was kind of thinking how would Peter Green, Mick Taylor, and Paul Kossoff approach it and this is what I came up with. Let me know what you think, and if you guys could give it a thumbs up and pass it around, it would mean the world to me. Thank You.
