Topic: Harrisburg Pa 8/30/07

I'm a very happy camper!!!! Joe's first time there in 17yrs. The Whitaker Center is top notch. Small theater with good sound. Now, a small side story, but important. Months ago the plan was for another covert trip to the States by our friend Michael Lynch. He and his wife, Sharon, were going to visit friends in Pa. and go to Sellersville and Harrisburg. That all went south when Michael's Mom got ill. (She is healing). So Jane and I got Michael's seats right up front. Deanna Bogart opened with some rocking piano and a killer bass player. Then a short break, the room darkened and Bogie came out first...Boom Boom....All in for Bridge to Better Days...Walk in my Shadow...So Many Roads...Mountain Time..Another Kind of Love...Sloe Gin...Highwater Everywhere...Heartaches were Nickel's (typo on the set list says Heartache FOR Nickels)...Woke up Dreaming....Django...Just got Paid...Encore..Asking Around for you/Los Endos.....Just like Utica. There were bits of Frampton and others Carl knows better than I. WOW! I can tell you that when he walked to stage front with the Gigliotti for Mountain Time, the spotlight bounced off the guitar and it was magic. One of those "moments"! This was a Joe friendly crowd to start with. Many "shirts"..(Get your Sloe Gin shirts now!!!) There were parents bringing their kids to hear their music. Way cool! It was a very fluid and powerful set. 75minutes. It went fast! I did miss the "2nd" guitar in the new songs probably because that's how I've learned them but they transition well into the live shows. I am struck by how much Joe's voice continues to "grow", amazing....Just like the new CD, this new set list is mature and very user friendly! We got to see Joe after outside the bus. He was his usual kind and grateful self. Don't worry, we got Michael a whole collection of autographed items. I even printed a copy of Batman with Joe and Joe wrote on the back to Michael "The greatest moment of my career"...So for now, I've had my turn and I'm feeling really good. I know the rest of you here on this street are going to feel the same when it's your turn....And please, someone tell Joe how thin he's gotten..I forgot to tell him and I know he's been working at it......Cathy

Hey Cathy glad you guys had a great time!  Happy camper days are here again, or something like that.  That's too bad about Michael's mom, but glad to hear that she is getting better.

A 75 minute setlist can indeed go by fast, but that is better than none at all.  When looking at Lee's pictures the other day I did seem to notice how thin Joe was looking.   Good job Joe...

I noticed that too Jane last week. Were these the same shoes? http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id … p;size=oIt was cool to listen to Joe stomp out the beat to "High Water" with those shoes as he marched through the song. Did they have the shirts you wanted? Anyway, nice review ladies and happy to hear you had fun!

Re: Harrisburg Pa 8/30/07

Loved your detailed reviews Cathy and Jane.  Sounds like it was another AWESOME show from Joe and the boys.  Jane especially loved your recap on what Joe was wearing......always want to know that info.  Also, thanks for the heads up on the Sloe Gin T-shirts.  Will be purchasing mine tomorrow at Joe's show in St. Marys, OH.
Take care girls.........

Re: Harrisburg Pa 8/30/07

Hey Cathy and Jane, great reviews, I know after those shows end I get bummed out. I start to realize that I wait months for the show to happen and it's over in a short time. It's all good after tonight, when I hit that $300,000,000 jack pot tonight, I'll be able to go anywhere at any time. You guys want to travel with me, I'll pay all your expenses.
Seriously, the best thing about the shows are hanging with your forum friends, know what i mean? I've had a blast throwing down beers and hanging with JDAWG, just a great guy, and we both have the same taste in music. I really hope the forum get together happens in the near future, so we can put the faces with the words.

Great reviews was listening to Sloe Gin while reading them, and almost felt like I was there. I know I wished I was there.. lol Sounds like Joe's on fire and invigorated by the release of the   Billboard #1 Blues -- Slo Gin.. Can't wait till Oct. to experience it firsthand. Oh and Shred good luck with the Mega Millions smile I got my 5 Quick pics .. Hope someone on the forum wins..     that'll buy a party                Paul

The acoustic version of High Water Everywhere was the best song of the set in my opinion.  The sound quality of that room was very good.  I was way up in the balcony and you could hear Joes foot tapping the stage like he was right next to you.  From where I was sitting up top I felt the show could have been a little louder though.  Kind of a different experience since I'm usually up front at the general admission shows.  Awesome show.

Re: Harrisburg Pa 8/30/07

Wonderful reviews!! Sounds like Joe is back in fine form and better than ever after the break. I'm looking forward to a great show Sunday in Rockford.

And I'm getting one of those SG shirts. They better put one aside for me. big_smile

I'm just saying.

Re: Harrisburg Pa 8/30/07

Hey....big THANKS! to Jane for thinking of me for the "extra" ticket....was a bit stressed about getting there on time but it all worked out.

Beautiful theater, nice people, Joe kicked butt, as per usual.

Highlights for me, personally, were the acoustic portion of the set...High Water, Heartaches "unplugged" (Joe on acoustic with the band quietly in background), the Woke Up Dreaming was absolutely on FIRE, with some lightning-fast staccato runs ala Al DiMeola.  His ability to use dynamics in his playing amazes me. Another Kind of Love is just a great groove.  I'm really digging the Eastern-flavored intro to Mountain Time, though I can also hear Jane's thoughts on something more Celtic.  Sloe Gin was great (though I missed the distorted wah-wah flair on "stormy seas"), I kinda dug the delay on the vocals at first, but it started to get distracting after a while....still cool.  As a music lover and a mediocre guitarist, I am constantly amazed at Joe's ability to play such neat-sounding stuff that is SO far from the penatonic scale (you guitar guys (and GALS, Fretwork, Mary, etc.) KNOW what I'm talkin' about) but that somehow fits perfectly.

Was great to chat with Joe at the bus afterwards....such a gentleman, and stuck around til the last autograph got signed and the last few die-hards were just making small talk when he finally dropped the curtain on a great night.  I see Johnny Winter and Leon Russell (yes, together) are playing the same venue soon, I may consider getting tix for that based on some of the JW reviews I've heard here.

Keep on rockin' the blues!!

Re: Harrisburg Pa 8/30/07

I'm a little late posting this but my computer had a nasty virus and crashed. Thank goodness for computer geek friends!

It was so nice to meet Jane, Cathy and Carl the other night. The Whitaker Center was beautiful inside. I have very little I can add to the review since the ladies did such a fine job doing that. I loved the acoustic songs Joe did, his vocals give me goosebumps. I still can't believe he did Heartaches Were Nickels. I love that song and it was the 1st time I've seen him do it live. Rick tore up the keyboards, he really had 'em smokin' on his solo.  Carmine has some beautiful bass guitars which he proceeded to vibrate my innards with and Bogie, well what can I say? That boy is an amazing drummer! I was a little disappointed with Joe's mic, when he stepped away from it to hit those powerful vocal notes, the mic didn't pick it up and we lost his voice.  Fortunately we were close enough to still hear him. All in all, I was in heaven for 75 minutes!

We mingled around the tour bus until the very end when Joe thanked us all and said goodnight.  Joe is such a down to earth guy, my hat goes off to his parents who have done an outstanding job raising him! It was a very good show, well worth the 4 hour drive.

Joe is a legend in the making, and I'm witnessing history being made each time I see him.

Dazee:  It was great meeting you too....glad you enjoyed the show.  Don't think we'll make Richmond...but as far as Rockville...you should "Reconsider Baby" :-)  I think it's gonna be a great show.  But, aren't they ALL? wink

Re: Harrisburg Pa 8/30/07

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'm a new here, and since this Whitaker Center show was my first Joe Bonamassa show, I just gotta post.  I won't write a full-blown review since everyone else did such a good job of describing the show, but I do want to express how much Joe blew me away.  Some highlights for me were the Just Got Paid Today/Dazed & Confused medley, and Woke Up Dreaming.  A friend had turned me onto JB this past spring/summer and I was impressed, but seeing him live is simply amazing!  Ever since then I've been telling everyone about him and sending/posting links to YouTube vids and stuff.  I have a 17-year old son who plays guitar, and I was so mad at myself for not taking him along to that show... I couldn't wait for Joe to get back to the Harrisburg area, so I ended up driving my son 2 hours northeast to see him at Penn's Peak a couple weeks ago... yeah, I'll be bumping that thread then too, lol.

And I want to add that Deanna Bogart was pretty impressive too... I'd definitely go see her again if I see her around.
