Topic: JB Fans in the Southern States

Hi,

I'm currently planning a road trip in late january early Feb through Atlanta-Nashville-Memphis-New Orleans-Mobile-Montgomery and back to Atlanta.

If there are any JB fans on here on that line of route please let me know, 'cos it would be great to hook up anywheres and/or if you have any tips of things that one should/must do or see/visit then feel free to inform me.

General tips of advice, the nest clubs and bars for live musicand open stages, where to stay or eat will also be welcome for my musical pilgrimage.

I look forward to y'all sharing your words of wisdom.

Thanks MikeH

Re: JB Fans in the Southern States

very cool there Mike. I'm in Birmingham,AL and only about 5 minutes off of I-20 if you were coming from Atlanta. I would be glad to take you to lunch, my treat, maybe some Jim 'n Nicks for barbeque, though you will probably get your fill of various smoked meats on this itinerary. You can send me an email through the forum if you want to plan a stop here. We also have a local upscale club called Workplay, but it's downtown and a lot of times they have artists I've never heard of. Atlanta is a mess driving, though a lot of good music venues, actually too many to list but Variety Playhouse has some very good shows from time to time. You have to visit Gruhn Guitars at 400 Broadway in Nashville, one of the best collections anywhere in the US. When in Memphis, you have to go down to Beale Street at least one night and do the club scene, they have a B.B. Kings that usually has very good local talent and an awesome house band. I could recommend Corky's there for barbeque, and Gus' Fried Chicken is to die for. There is really nothing to see in Montgomery, drive on through. I lived in Mobile for a few years, it's a fun city for the most part. You absolutely have to hit the Wintzell's Oyster Bar/House downtown just off Government Blvd. Dreamland BBQ is pretty good there, Old Shell Road just off I-65. And of course you can just get lost in New Orleans, so many things to see and do. A trip to the French Quarter is mandatory for some drinks and some really good jazz bands. I can recommend Cochon for an upscale restaurant, but there are tons of places that put out a good shrimp or oyster po-boy. The mufaletta sandwiches are cheap and usually very good.
Welcome to the south, hope you have a great time of it and do send me an email if you think you can stop in here on the way through.

Re: JB Fans in the Southern States

Tres, thanks a lot! Some great tips there, and just the sort of thing I was hoping for.

I will have  free itinary so to speak, and can spend whatever time I want wherever I want really so its great to get some feedback like that. I am firming up the dates and such this week, lay the money down, take that pain and get on the plane.

I'll write direct as you suggest when its done, check the routes and would be delighted to meet up. I definately want to make some JB connections this trip as it would be rude not to!

Good I've dropped some weight this past couple of months. All that BBQ and fried chicken. Oh man! I'm tasting it already.

I'll be in touch

Re: JB Fans in the Southern States

Sounds good Mike but I have not received anything yet, not sure what the problem can be other than standard delay through the forum. Not a problem though, you could just call me before or when you get to town, 205-397-2095. Not much to do in Birmingham but we can certainly go get a bite to eat and discuss some music.

I just realized you'll be around during the IBC's in Memphis. If possible, I strongly suggest you consider going. I also recommend you check out the Blues Society listings for the areas you will visit. They often have links to clubs, bands and a listing for music in the area. I have put this out on FBG and I'll let you know about any responses wink

Just a reminder. Avoid NOLA the first weekend in Feb due to the Super Bowl wink

Hi Mike, I live in the South (in Louisiana) but I'm 5 and 1/2 hours north of New Orleans.  I do travel there, though and it's a great place to visit.  There is a House of Blues in the French Quarter, check current listings for who's playing there.  Some time in the French Quarter is a must!

Another great area for live music is Frenchmen's Street.  Here's a link:   http://www.neworleansonline.com/tools/s … treet.html  ... especially check out The Blue Nile.

The food in New Orleans is out of this world.  Be prepared to gain much weight!

Should you decide to come north to Shreveport, let me know.  There's not much here compared to New Orleans, but there's a warm bonabuddy welcome!

Let me know your plans.  Have a great trip and safe travels!

... edited to say I'll add more specifics about the food in New Orleans and restaurant recommendations later this evening when I have more time.

... another edit:  Mike when you're traveling to Birmingham or Memphis, it's really close to Mississippi and the Delta if you happen to be a Delta Blues fan ... that's another whole topic!

... one more P.S.  It's Mardi Gras time in New Orleans and it's crazy!  Millions of tourists and parades and the French Quarter is crammed.  Let me get specific dates for you and get back to you.

Sandy

Re: JB Fans in the Southern States

yeah Sandy, it just hit me when Cathy mentioned the Super Bowl. At least one Mardi Gras parade is a must, and I don't know which ones are better. Mobile will also have some parades going on, it's the real home of Mardi Gras, not New Orleans. Beads, and moon pies, and partially clad girls everywhere!

Re: JB Fans in the Southern States

Now you guys are just getting me hot for it!

Mardi Gras parades, food to die for, the best music divesin the world. Hell, 3 weeks ain't gonna be enough!

Tres, thanks for the number. I'll get landed and some shut eye and then give a call.

Whats this? Not much to do in Birmingham? Hey... "..in Birmingham they got the Governor, and we all did what we could do.......". If it's mentioned in 'Sweet home....' it has already got its place in history!

Thanks people for the input. Good that I dropped some kilos in the run up to Xmas already. Looks like keeping to that weight through 2013 is gonna be a pipe dream....

Shucks, live for the day, we're a long time dead.................

Re: JB Fans in the Southern States

funny you should say that, our place in history is firmly secured in the 1960's race riots, replete with fire hosing of people and church bombings. Not a great thing to be remembered for. Look forward to seeing you.

Tres, did you get the mail eventually, or is PM through the forum better?

Hey I noticed Talladega is on my line of route. As a confirmed petrol head I'm gonna have to check it out. I'll send a mail today to them. It's racin' Jim, but not as we know it..........

Re: JB Fans in the Southern States

I have not received any message yet but sent you one this morning, hoping it goes through soon. You can also get me on my cell phone although it is turned off mostly in the daytime, 205-566-8642. I will try to remember to leave it on at least in the afternoon. Will you be coming in to Atlanta first?

Re: JB Fans in the Southern States

Hope it's still Monday where you are Mike ... finally got the New Orleans Mardi Gras parade schedule for you:

I mentioned how great the food is in New Orleans, you just can't go wrong.  Fresh Gulf shrimp, fresh fish, oysters, any kind of seafood.  Depending on what you like, some interesting dishes to try are Gumbo (or Gumbeaux), Shrimp Etouffee, Jambalaya, red beans & rice, muffalettas (sandwich), 'Nawlins po-boys (Muspero's in French Quarter has good ones), oysters at Acme Oyster or Dragos ...

Have a wonderful trip!!  Enjoy the South!

Mike, be sure to have some beinets (no idea how to spell! - can somebody help? Sounds like bin-yays), a kind of pastry covered in powdered sugar, in Jackson Square.  Fabulous, plus their coffee is outstanding.
