Topic: Want to change the headstock or neck on my '79 LP?

This is probably gonna sound crazy or to some it might not so here goes....I own beautiful natural maple top 1979 LP Std that I've owned for over 20yrs and only cost me £390, but I've always disliked the headstock shape and i would really love to change it too a smaller 50s style headstock as I've measured the dimensions and it can reduced in size and reset the machineheads as it can has  been done before....and here's where it gets even more crazy since I now own a beautiful R8 and having own a JBLP, I've come to love The  50s LP fat necks, as I'm wondering what would I expect to pay for a 50s neck plus the labour to undertake such a job? Sorry I can't post any pics as I'm not sure how it's done! This LP is a real special fantastic sounding guitar that has a great vibe about too and that I have thought many years about having done, would love too hear your views (pros & cons ) or maybe has anyone else done or thought about something similar? Given The fact I live in Ireland the obvious choice would be Kim from HM, (but sadly thats not possible) I seen the photos of Rons #238 I think that really gave me the idea that it can be done.....or am I just being daft smile

Re: Want to change the headstock or neck on my '79 LP?

I suppose you could do this.  You could find a LP with the neck you want and see if they could swap the necks for you.  It would be hard but not impossible.  I think my biggest fear is you love the tone of this guitar now and its special, what if you reduce the size and the over sized head stock was part of the magic that made it have that vibe it had?  Honestly something as old as that guitar I wouldn't bother.  Its 33 years old and is like a diamond in the rough.  My opinion is I wouldn't touch it.  Aint broke don't fix it.  Just like the Fender Strats with the boat paddle head stock some people think they are ugly some don't my first question is how does it sound?  If it sounds great play it, if it sounds bad move on.  I don't base my guitars on how they look or how I'm going to look with them strapped on my shoulder because nobody is going to care if its got a creamy tone coming from it.

You might contact these people... but It might cost as much as your R8 to have anything like this done...

Ask me about my handwound Great Lakes Guitar Pickups
Since 2010, Bonamassa fans have taken advantage of my JB friend discount = my cost + shipping. cool

But he said he lives in Ireland and it would cost more to have it shipped and come back in and such.

Re: Want to change the headstock or neck on my '79 LP?

Thanks for your views/replies guys, I have sourced a guitar Luthier here in N.ireland he used to be one of the top luthiers from Lowden Guitars, which are said to be some of the finest accoustic guitars about (sadly they are no longer in business) he says it would take time and patience, I've seen a lot of his work and he comes highly recommended, he even said he'd be able to use my existing fretboard..... as it is a beautiful dark rich board I really love, sadly the only thing I won't be having done is making it lighter, as 70s LPs are known for being very heavy.....and then when I add a thicker neck this thing is gonna be even heavier! Ill Just have to get a nice big comfortable strap..I'll keep you posted when things get started with some before and after shots

Re: Want to change the headstock or neck on my '79 LP?

Ted179, my suggestion would be to keep the 79 stock, and try to trade it for something that fits your likes.  For example a an early 70's,  1950's reissue (look it up, they exist).  Or sell it outright and get a custom shop aged something or other in time.  I am not against mods, but in the end, if you have to cut into the wood, or add wood, you are making so many changes to the existing guit, that it will just not be the same instrument; it plainly will not sound the same, so all the "mojo" and all of the currently great things about it, in the end, will be gone.  The reason the guitar sounds good now is because of the the wood, shape, and electronics.  Changing electronics is a reversible thing, but seems like removing and adding wood, the headstock being purely cosmetic, and the neck shape changed... yikes.  If for some reason you did not like it, in terms of feel (something that cannot be predicted as i recently touched a custom shop 59, and then a real 59 burst and they got the neck shoulders all wrong, and if Gibson themselves can't do it right...) there is no way to go back, and your guitar will be worth jack didley squat in the market.  Just my two cents since you asked, but in the end we have to fall many times to learn to walk.  Now if this was a new off the shelf guit, i would say "play ball".  Don't cut the old wood!!!

If he can take the neck off he can take the top off.  Have him route it out!  Weight relief.  Its going to be a completely different guitar anyway why not make it comfortable if its too heavy.
