Prince.
No-brainer there, just the best musician on the planet
have to say that I do not think Lyndsey Buckingham and Mark Knopfler to be underrated, - and (as an aside) they have played some pretty good guitars along the way, - LB's Turners are a bit different.

My underrated guitarist vote would be for Charlie Hargrett, I was mesmerised many years ago when seeing him live a few times with Blackfoot, - but there again that was a very underrated band.

Speaking of Lindsey B., in a recent interview in RS.com he mentioned kicking around the idea of doing a 40th anniversary tour of the Buckingham Nicks album. That would be well worth checking out.
Think Green,
J Dawg
Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth.
He was highly inspired by the underrated Andy Latimer.
My vote for underrated - Michael Einziger - most will be saying .... Michael .. who?
Frank Zappa. Most folk just don't 'get' his playing, but it's fantastically free & original

+1 for that. I had that album years ago and lost it. Years later a friend transfered it and gave me a scratchy copy on cd and I've misplaced that too. LB still has it, but SN has completely lost that wonderful voice.

really! well.. maybe they're not that much known where i live... so i guess that ain't no standard...

Yes,maybe your location has had an influence.
I remember where i first heard, and saw a copy of Dire Straits - Brother In Arms - Down town Riyadh, SA .... no less!

in Riyadh! you're kidding! well, Jordan is way more open minded than SA...

And don't forget Hughes - Thrall when he did an album with Glenn.
Will Kimbrough, originally from Mobile, AL, but based out of Nashville these days. I've seen him accompanying Rodney Crowell a couple of times and his guitar playing steals the show.

IMO: Ian Parker from Stourbridge/ Birmingham/ Black Country.
Marc Ford.
Marc Ford.
Not to be confused with Mark Ford, Robben's brother, who's a harp player anyway.
Happy New Year!!!

I guess it is a timing thing, - both artists that major success came out in the 1980's. Pretty sure that both "Rumours" and "Brothers in Arms" are albums in the top 10 of all time best selling ever, - reported circa 40 million copies I believe. And "Money for Nothing" not only the first video aired by MTV but I think the most played. - Knopfler's is interesting in that it is reported that he earns more from royalty payments now than he ever did during the Dire Straits career, - he has now gone back to a more folk roots orientated music because he can play what he likes rather than what an audience will buy, - there is a really interesting documentary filmed by his ex bassists on his 6 guitar stories that is well worth a look:

which talks about him as one of the greatest guitar virtuoso's in the world.

I agree with both of you on this one. Probably with Reem maybe FM and Dire Straits weren't as well known, but to most in the west MK and LB were the opposite. In this forum I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I prefer the Buckingham - Nicks version of Fleetwood Mac over the Peter Green led one. That despite including Greenie in my top five guitarists of all time.
