Topic: Greetings from the Deep South

I have been lurking here for a couple of years and am finally joining  the discussion since my husband just got my picture of Joe and I posted for my avatar.

I am a classically trained musician who had always played with symphonies and was never a fan of the blues like my husband, until a fateful afternoon in the French Quarter in New Orleans 2005.  The bar was almost empty on a hot August afternoon and there was a 3 piece blues band playing their hearts out.... all of a sudden I got it.

Then, we both found Joe in all the usual ways...Pandora, Palladia and then proceeded to purchase everything.  I am actually the more obsessed fan and like Sally1233, I am old enough to be Joe's mother.

We have had the pleasure of seeing Joe in 2010 in Pensacola and then drove 7 hours to see him in Nashville 2012.  My picture is from the Nashville show where we were able to sneak into the theater just after the sound check, and just watch Joe talk with the guy from the Kentucky Headhunters who was a guest that night.  Someone finally saw us and ushered us out and asked how we got in......the door was unlocked we said.  Two old people weren't much of a threat and we were thrilled for the opportunity.  We even got to brag at the tasting room at the Jackalope brewery before the concert and all the 20 somethings thought we were cool, but had never heard of Joe!   We had hoped to see him in Jacksonville in Dec. but hubby is having knee surgery a few days before.

So, that's my story and one day I'd love to teach Joe that beer can be just as interesting a beverage as the wines he loves!
Cheers,
Sharon

Re: Greetings from the Deep South

a hearty welcome Sharon from here in Bham, finally we really do have someone from "LA". lol I love Dothan, my great aunt lived in Geneva for all of her later life, my mother was born in Brundidge. AND you picked my fav adult beverage as well, double awesome. AND, I also got to see Joe in Nashville at that same venue (TPAC) although it was in 2008, with special guest Larry Carlton. wink This oh too weird, I also had knee surgery in 2008 for a blown quad tendon, not fun so tell hubby to hang in there cause it will get better. I am so stoked to have another Alabamian on the site, I have pretty much been it for a long time.
Really, really good to have both of you here, stick around and enjoy the Bonafamily, we're pretty friendly and laid back and just want the best for Joe in coming years.

Re: Greetings from the Deep South

Sharon, so nice to have you here!!!  Glad you finally signed up and made your fan-ship official.

As you already know, you'll enjoy this bunch.  Great fun to express our adoration and support for Joe.

Many moons ago I had the good fortune to get to Dothan for a few days in my work, pretty place.

My mother had a double knee replacement some years ago.  And she's extremely sensitive to pain meds and somehow got through it all on Advil!  Good luck to your hubby.

Have fun beergodess and welcome!

Nice to say hi from the UK also. Welcome to the 'family' big_smile

Come on the Blades (sorry Idolbone just had to borrow your line)

Re: Greetings from the Deep South

Always fun when another former lurker signs up and tells their story.

Welcome.  You're in good company (but then you already know that, having lurked for a while).

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.

Re: Greetings from the Deep South

Well, I am originally from Chicago and moved to Alabama when I was 12.  Thanks for all the warm welcomes.  I actually got to Bonabaptise my son's new inlaws a week ago.  They came to visit while we are down in Panama City,Fl for the month and I subjected them to RAH and Beacon Theater.  Then, I find out out that Dad-in-Law has 7 guitars and lives outside Nashville!

Cheers, Sharon

Re: Greetings from the Deep South

Welcome Sharon.  I too am old enough to be Joe's mother.  Sometimes I feel so proud of him.  Glad you stopped lurking and joined the fun.  These folks here on the forum has great stories.  Spend some time reading through past threads.  Great info here.

Re: Greetings from the Deep South

Welcome aboard Sharon from a member older than Joe's mom. lol You will come to learn that most members are "mature" and thus we fuss over any young members we can snag.  Once you have the Joe Bug you have to spread the word. No sense fighting it wink Just curious..what instrument do you play?      Cathy

Re: Greetings from the Deep South

Well, I was a flute player and studied with one of the greats in college.  I went on to play professionally when I could with orchestras, chamber groups and a harpsichordist for awhile.  While raising 3 kids I switched to more teaching.  We lived near Muscle Shoals,AL for awhile and hubby always wanted me to go down to the recording studios to do some playing, but that just wasn't my cup of tea then.

Now that hubby is semi-retired, we spend our time doing "beer travel" and following Joe's concerts when we can.

Cheers,
Sharon

Re: Greetings from the Deep South

would that have been Hubert Laws? pretty sure it's not Ian Anderson. smile
