Today I shed a few tears at a funeral for a man I had never even met. Patty and Bobby put together the most amazing funeral for their departed husband/father. I am 55 years old and I couldn't guess how many funerals I have been to, but this one was by far and away the most meaningful and heartfelt. Patty got up and talked about Don and was followed by Bobby who read an entry that he had  found in one of his father's journals. Then person after person got up and talked about what Don had meant to them, many were chiropractic patients and several spoke of how he had helped them even when they couldn't pay for the service; he must have been an amazingly gifted healer. One man got up and sang a song a-cappella and a woman had a poem that someone had written about Don. I wish I had kept count of how many people got up to speak. The last one to talk about his experience with Don was the man that he had been taking guitar lessons from for the last nine years and he played a medley of favorite songs that Don had learned- starting with some CCR. Scattered throughout the service were several recorded songs including Jeff Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah" (where I lost it) and of course the service ended with Joe Bonamassa's "Asking Around For You".

It was a real tribute to a man I wish I'd had the opportunity to have known. It was the kind of service that made you reassess the amount of good that you are doing with your life and ponder if anyone would have reason to get up and speak from the heart at your own funeral. It was the new standard by which I will measure all funerals and Patty is to be commended for a job superbly done in the most trying of times.

I was so hoping we could have made the trip down for this, but circumstances wouldn't allow it. In talking with Patty I knew some of the details of the service and it did sound like it would be a wonderful tribute. Thank you Dan for this beautiful write-up.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I would have lost it too when they played "Halleujah". I find it comforting to know a forum member was there. Patty is nothing but love wink   Cathy

Re: Condolences to Patty

Dear Family,

I can't even begin to tell you how meaningful all your messages, letters & phone calls have been to Bobby and I.  The truth of it still stings and is hard to understand but has become so clear in many other ways.  I can't tell you how much it meant to me when I saw Dan (Graymtr) & Susan walking up to me. ♥ Hugging them was like hugging all of you ♥  And it was so sweet before they left, Susan came to me and said, "Dan has something for you."  He gave me a big hug and said, "That's from Rhonda (photogal)!"  So I said, "I bet she had two hugs for me!" and I got one more from him.  I don't want anyone to ever forget who Don Patrick was, so I have decided to collect lots of "Don stories" and assemble them into a book.  I can't think of any greater gift I could give our son Bobby than a book about who his Dad was. He was deeply loved, admired, and respected by his patients and friends.  I know he had faults, like all of us do, and we had our share & then some of ups & downs, but he was a good and loving man.  There have been so many interesting things revealed thru Don's passing....many lessons to be remember and practiced.......forgiveness, tolerance of others beliefs, random acts of kindness, Don's giving nature exemplified the verse," it is far better to give than to receive."  He took his Chiropractic oath to heart, he didn't just mouth the words.  I can only hope that Bobby saw all the goodness in his Dad and makes use of it in his own life.  I thank you all from my heart and am so glad for this place we call "our Joe home."  Many thanks from Bobby, too.  He is amazed by all of you smile

Dearest Patty,

You've always been such a special person here and your beauty I'm sure enriched Don's life.  He's in Heaven now and at peace and you'll see him and all your beloved when God sees fit.  I found this song that someone told me was written not only for Vince Gill's brother, but for his dear friend Keith Whitley.  It's not about casting stones, but rather the love we possess for those dear to us that have gone on.  I get teary-eyed every time, but this is truely a beautiful remembrance.
God Bless your family and I have you all on permanent rotation on my prayer list.

Re: Condolences to Patty

Patty,

Jocelyn and I are only just now reading this, and we are so very sorry for your loss. We remember meeting you at Crossroads, your cheerfulness in the heat, and watching Clapton, Winwood and BB King with you and your sister. The beautiful words we have read demonstrate what a wonderful person Don was, and what a wonderful person you are. We wish you strength, courage, and healing as you move forward.

Love,

Don & Jocelyn

Re: Condolences to Patty

Over the past few days I have been disconnected from the net while doing a new computer build.  I'm very saddened to find this news as I get back to the forum.  Patty I hope you will be blessed by peace in the days ahead.

Re: Condolences to Patty

I just read this. Patty, my thoughts goes out to you and Bobby and I hope you two can find peace as you move from day to day. I understand because I lost my dad when I was 14 and it hit my mom hard. You have an amazing spirit and I know you'll find comfort in your memories of him and the energy you're receiving from all of us right now. Sending you a big hug from NY.
