Topic: Toronto Nov 17 Roy Thomson Hall

Lets just say it would be easy to comment on how great the show was - which it surely was.  I really did think I died and went to heaven.  From being able to get on the M&G, meeting Joe who has inpired a guy in his 40s to play his guitar everyday, to sitting in a theater where you can feel you are a part of something (not just a person who is 100 yards away and paid with his left arm to get in.

I tell you - Joe and his whole gang have got it together.  You all have created something special and you all should be proud.  Great music is what brings people to their first show but its the little things that make fans out of them.  I've seen great musicians do a terrible job in person and it is difficult to want to spend hard earned money on them.

Joe:  you have me for the long term.

Starting with Bad Company's Seagull - one of my favorite songs.  What a great surprise.  A nice little acoustic set to get things going.
The thing with Joe is that he has put out some great live DVDs so you know what you'll get.  He nailed it for over 2 hours.

I think there was only one misstep all night and I bet it had more to do more with the venue than the artist.   I hit the bank machine and was all set to lay out some cash for some new swag.  Unfortunately the only thing available for sale was CDs and DVDs.  Unfortunately I had all of them already.  Well I guess I'll put in my wish list for Christmas and do my shopping on line this year.

Can't wait to see him in May.  Thanks for all the street team cards.  Will be handing them out to bring even more blues fans into the know.

Nice review Maple Leaf. It was definitely one of the best concerts I saw all year. BTW, do you (or anyone else) who was at Roy Thomson Hall have the setlist?

I wasn't at this show, but did attend Columbus and Youngstown, which were almost identical.  Plus others here have verified the set-lists on this US fall tour are all mostly the same, except for a couple change-outs with the Chuck Berry tunes.  See "Show Reviews and Set Lists - St. Louis" for the list.

Anyone have any corrections for the Toronto show?

Nice to have you here, Steve L.

Nice review Maple Leaf. I believe the reason there were only dvd and cd at the sales table was due to Canadian Customs regulations. Joe has experienced fits with the service in the past and probably decided to go in light.

Re: Toronto Nov 17 Roy Thomson Hall

Fantastic review Maple Leaf! I too was at the Toronto Show - M & G as well (thanks Andrew!!!) where Joe was gracious enough to sign the back of the headstock of my R7 Goldtop (he remarked how "light it was")...really? I thought it was heavy!

I was going to post my own review but couldn't find enough adjectives in my limited vocabulary to describe it. It was that good. I have Joe's DVD's, spent countless hours watching Youtube vids, even more hours copping his licks - I was 4th row at Massey Hall in '11. This past show at Roy Thompson Hall was special - beginning with a GREAT crowd. I was front row center! In my opinion Joe was ON - moreso than usual. I was so thrilled and inspired by his performance I cant think about anything else. I also feel despair - he played on such and unnatural level to a point where I feel I will never see anything or anybody  match it. His phrasing was a little more "dangerous" than I had seen before - A virtuoso performance for the ages. The whole band was unreal - tighter than a bankers fist -what a rhythm section! Shaking hands with Carmine and Tal from the front row at the end of the show was the icing on the cake.

I included a link to some photos I saw posted on Twitter:

In the second to last photo I am the guy in the black shirt giving Joe the 'rock on" sign like a 12 yr old girl at a Justin Bieber concert.

Re: Toronto Nov 17 Roy Thomson Hall

Great reviews!  i too felt that Joe was on a superior level this fall when I saw him.  I think someone on here said it seems like Joe plays like it will be his last time ever to play the guitar.  I agree with that.  I love hearing others had a similar experience.  I find it hard to imagine anyone ever topping a show by Joe.  Thanks for sharing. Love the pictures.  You all are right, there aren't enough adjectives to describe it.  You have to experience it first hand.

Re: Toronto Nov 17 Roy Thomson Hall

Saw this on Joe's twitter account. I couldn't help but to bust a gut laughing. It's so true!!

Saw @JBONAMASSA The music was okay but all of those straight white guys lusting after him were freakin' me out.

Re: Toronto Nov 17 Roy Thomson Hall

Well I looked at the St. Louis set list and it differed slightly from what I noted.  First off I don't know the Palm Trees reference.  Couldn't find it anywhere.  Joe did play an acoustic intro before seagull so perhaps thats what it was.  I would love for someone to clarify what it was.

Here's what I had:

1 intro (acoustic)
2 Seagull (Bad Company cover) (acoustic)
3 Dislocated boy (acoustic)
4 Driving towards the daylight (acoustic)

5 Woke up dreaming
6 Slow train
7 Dust Bowl
8 Who's been talking
9 Midnight blues
10 The ballad of John Henry
11 Wee wee hours (Chuck Berry cover)
12 Look over yonders wall
13 Blues Deluxe
14 Young man blues
15 Mountain time

encore
16 Sloe Gin
17 Just got paid

Re: Toronto Nov 17 Roy Thomson Hall

Palm Trees, Gasoline and Helicopters is a small acoustic song from an older album by Joe.  I think it was on You and Me.

Re: Toronto Nov 17 Roy Thomson Hall

Just confirming that You and Me is the correct release.  Came out back in 2009, and was Joe's first collaboration with Kevin Shirley producing.

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.

Re: Toronto Nov 17 Roy Thomson Hall

thanks.  will have to look for it.

Maple Leaf, if that's the setlist for Columbus, GA. I will be overjoyed, I listened to Blues Deluxe tonight and got goose bumps over my entire body!

I'm a new fan as well, how did you find Joe?

Re: Toronto Nov 17 Roy Thomson Hall

For the record, I'm never that guy that posts to these kinds of forums, but I'm such a Bonamonster that I had to chime in. We were 6, that made the drive from Kingston Ontario, and we all felt blessed for that experience. I to, have seen all the DVD footage and countless you tubes, but to see him live!! Just no words!! Awesome venue, already booked for the Casino Rama concert in 2013, and am on a mission to spread the word of Joe far and wide. Keep your stick on the ice Joe!!

Re: Toronto Nov 17 Roy Thomson Hall

I was at this show and can't really add anything that hasn't already been said. Attended with my wife and another couple. My first time at Roy Thompson Hall .. nice venue. Also my first time seeing Joe live and it was freakin' epic! The guitar playing was ferocious, heartfelt, moving and the whole band was incredibly tight.

We all had a good chuckle when Joe told the story about Healey's. He had some trouble with his earpiece for a while but played through it like the true professional he is.

Oh, I have tickets for the London, ON show in may. The venue won't be nearly as good but I still can't wait to see him again!
