Re: Frankenstorm aka Hurricane Sandy

Well, the nitwits that be at HQ told me to either drive to Boston or take vacation time. Two hours later I get an email that they closed the factory in RI and sent everyone home. Grrrrr.... Best part of the drive: along the Mohawk on the Thruway and I had SILT going in the CD player. Hello Utica! Not too much wind and very little rain. Worst part was coming through the Berkshires. The hills were funneling the wind gusts and I had a couple of white knuckle moments. I have never seen the MassPike or I-495 so devoid of traffic! Now safely at the hotel. Hopefully the power won't go out and I can get this job knocked out tomorrow.

I've been wondering about you today. Glad your there safely.

All's ok here... so far. <fingers crossed>

Re: Frankenstorm aka Hurricane Sandy

So far still have power, probably because BGE cut trees back so drastically in recent years. Why is that whenever dark descends winds are always stronger and scarier. I wonder if there is a phobia for "wind fear" because i think i definitely suffer from this.

Re: Frankenstorm aka Hurricane Sandy

I'm feeling a little lucky too because I haven't lost power either. At this point, as the eye is passing over us, if the power goes out, I can just go to bed. I know the wind can be scary. Try putting on headphones to block the noise?
Angela, I'm SO sorry for you. My granddaughter spends all her time at LBI with her beau's family. They are all worried sick about it. Nothing you can do, so maybe it's time for the second bottle wink
There's still a lot of storm to come, so I'm wishing everybody a safe ride. See you all on the other side of this beast.      Cathy

Re: Frankenstorm aka Hurricane Sandy

11:00pm in Philly burbs and we still have power although 435K without power in the Delaware Valley.  The eye is close, winds are picking up but luckily the rain hasn't been too heavy.  Cable is out and that really hurts.  Be safe.

Hi all,
Looking out the window here at work feeling happy and guilty at the same time. It's a beautiful 28deg C, Sunny and a lovely calm ocean.
I can only imagine what's happening.
Take care guys.

Hi Alby,

It's Spring over there isn't it?  Your weather report is a nice reminder that there's a ray of sunshine somewhere every day.

I live a long way from the east coast, but in Indiana we've been getting Sandy's wind since last night.  Watching the news reports is really depressing.  7 or 8 million people without power, with a blizzard in some areas.  The death toll last heard was 17 people, but I believe this number may climb.  My heart goes out to all forum members caught in this freak of nature.

Re: Frankenstorm aka Hurricane Sandy

We are all safe, I am very thankful!!  As far as our little  shack near Atlantic City, no one is even allowed on the island unti Thursday, so it is what it is!! I'll cross that bridge when I get there... big_smile The house is halfway between the beach and the bay on a higher street in the town, so we'll just have to wait and see. The house was built in the 50's, its only 3 steps up from the ground.  Part of my brain is cleaning up sand and debris and ditching furniture, the other part is tearing down and selling the land... One could go batty with all the what if scenarios...At this point, its so much easier to laugh than cry... lol

We had lots of power surges like I've never witnessed...in classic Halloween style, lights hovered low for long periods, went out, came back on...it was eerie!! Our parents don't have power and the temperature has dropped, so we are taking them in. I made a big pot of chicken soup! Life is good!

I hope all bonabuddies everywhere are safe & sound, warm & dry. smile

Glad you are safe it is unbelievable what we see on the BBC news, my heart goes out to all those affected by this event.

Re: Frankenstorm aka Hurricane Sandy

Not even raining here today in York Pa. No damage here, wasn't really buying into the hype of storm for this are at least. Not that I'm discounting the power of the storm cause it definitely did its share of damage elsewhere. Glad to hear everyone on here so far is safe and sound.

Re: Frankenstorm aka Hurricane Sandy

This area fared better than most. Although a local 8 year old boy was killed when a tree limb fell on him while he and his dad were checking their property. Having lost my 6 y/o nephew under similar circumstances I can honestly say I'd much much prefer to have to deal with cleaning up property damage than to endure the agonizing loss of a child.

I hope everyone is safe.

Thanks for the update, glad you fared well.  Terrible news about the boy, tragic.  Just lots of wind and rain in NoVA, feeling very fortunate.

Re: Frankenstorm aka Hurricane Sandy

Considering myself lucky. 26 acres of forest around me and no trees down by the house or along the lane to the road. We never lost power either. Phew. All my NJ peeps are fine too. So sad about the deaths. And, my heart breaks for all the homes that burned in Queens. Many fireman, EMT's, invovled with 9/11 lived there. I don't want to hear the words hunker down again!!  Glad everyone who has checked in faired well.  Cathy

Re: Frankenstorm aka Hurricane Sandy

Comforting to see your (and the other's) posts, both before and after Sandy.

Thoughts are with you on your shore home.

Lost power from 2am till 2pm.  No real big mess (flat roof leak which was expecting and had tubs out) and many movable branches.

The back end wind (after the calm eye passed over) was really quite faster than the front side, as they said it would be on TV. (I thought it would be similar speed here inland, other than the direction.)

We dodged a bullet I think. Last year's Irene helped a bit, with homeowners and power co's cutting trees and fixing lines since last year.

Don't think it was overhyped.  There is some real damage close by out there...inland, and the shore.

Few inches out of the Jack bottle, and got reacquainted with Joe's back catalog.  An actual better night than some others I've had. smile

Keep us posted on your findings.

PS: I can smell chicken soup outside.  You must be just northwest of me. big_smile

Re: Frankenstorm aka Hurricane Sandy

We lucked out, too.  Since we lost power for so long (ten days) after last years hurricane Irene we were prepared for the worst, but luckily that didn't happen.  I think that, as someone else mentioned all the cleanup and repairs from last year helped out this year.  No power loss, cable out for a bit, sun is shining today (most of the time).

Spider, my heart goes out to the family of that little boy, and all those people in Queens - saw some of that last night on TV and just speechless.  I am also happy to report that my beloved Assateague is still there, and I have seen one picture of one of the ponies that made it thru - so that's good.  Angela - fingers crossed.

Chicken soup does sound good though.
