Re: Favorite Guitar Riff

"Couldn't Stand the Weather" -- SRV (and just about any riff he played)
"The Wait" -- James Honeyman-Scott--link is the band and him in action at a Rockpalast show (that Pretenders debut had some amazing stuff, in general)

The Doobie Brothers had loads of classic riffs, too.  Too many for me to single out anything in particular.  Same for Skynyrd.

Like others, I could go on and on.  But these jumped to mind.  I was also fond of the work of Ross Childress with Collective Soul.

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.

Man do I love the Doobies, right off the top of my head, the riffs Tom Johnston & Pat Simmons trade off in the end of Road Angel just sizzle. Don't even get me goin' on Skynyrd, Sweet Home Alabama is an absolute classic IMO. The two of them played together last night in Stockton, Ca. and sad to say I wasn't there, but I caught them together a year ago this weekend @ BR Cohn Winery in Glen Ellen, Ca. Bruce Cohn, the Doob's long time mgr.s winery. Oh yeah, Leon Russell & Little Feat were there too! BTW, this topic is futile, I gotta million favorite riffs!!!

Re: Favorite Guitar Riff

I don't think I've ever listened to Road Angel at anything much less than full volume.

Have loads of fond concert memories (not so much from the Michael McDonald days).

Ditto for Skynyrd, and the Outlaws could lay some pretty intense guitar out there, too.

I always liked Henry Paul.  Remember a solo tune he did called "Grey Ghost", that had some killer licks.

Gonna see Henry and his latest version of The Outlaws Fri. night @ Thunder Valley Casino In Roseville, Shred's neck of the woods. I won a pair of tix to see them 2 weeks ago tonight, but already had the tix for this Fri. and nobody was into going on a Mon. night after a very active weekend prior. Their new CD is good 'ol southern rock titled It's About Pride.

Re: Favorite Guitar Riff

Whenever I hear Mississippi Queen live on youtube, or another band covering it, even my old band did it, to me; nothing compares to whatever magic they captured when they recorded it. It just has THAT sound. Kinda fuzzy, overdriven, muffled kick drum..I don't know. I always think when I hear it that we're lucky we have it. Cause if someone else was working the controls, it might not have been as good. I just hate that the song is only like 2 minutes long!

Whenever the question is asked the first one to jump into my mind is Elliot Randall's "Reelin in the Years".
