great topic, should draw a ton of interest. The first right off the bat is EVH's on Mean Street. The second is Just Got Paid whether it's ZZ or Joe. will keep the thinking hat on but these 2 popped in first. Several from Jeff Beck, would not know where to start. thanks Don.
How about Rollin Stone, Humble Pie
Jessica by Allman Brothers. Dickie Betts is a master on this one; and Jimmy Page on Heartbreaker
The Stealer & Mr. Big
the best is probably one of the simplest.... "La Grange", - but to play it well is a skill, - BFG makes it bounce, Slash could not manage it on that House of Blues live video, - John Mayer nailed it and gave it some more.
or... "Black Dog" by Mr Page.
But there are a lot of more modern gems: "No One Knows" by Queens of the Stone Age", - drumming part is not bad either!
or "Slither" by Velvet Revolver. http://youtu.be/BKz2U4fvA4U
Metallica - Enter Sandman - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD-E-LDc384
Not the only one i've thought of, but it is a favourite classic guitar riff.
+ Montrose - Space Station #5
+ UFO - Rock Bottom
This is such torture to my mind having (to force myself) to select the most favourite one(s).
I'd go for 1. Eric Clapton's Layla 2. Rory Gallagher's Laundromat 3. Joe's Just Got Paid 4. Nirvana's Small Likes Teen Spirit 5. The Beatles's Day Tripper 6. Hendrix's Purple Haze
I actually have more but these aforementioned riffs are my favourites as of now.
Edit 1 time : typo
Johnny winter playing "Rock and roll hoochie coo" live on his brother's Roadwork album
The end of UFO's Love to Love. That's just the first one that comes to mind.
I can't think right now cuz I'm watching/blasting RAH blue-ray!

Yes!!! Good one...
Couldn't possibly pick an all time favorite but one of my favorites right now is the riff to 'Sevens' by Guthrie Govan, both infectious & clever!

My favorite Joe riff has to be every riff on BCC's 'Ordinary son', it starts so delicate and holds the vocal lines so pleasingly, then BOOM you get your payoff at the chorus. Very overlooked tune!

And although it isn't strictly speaking a 'Guitar' riff, the Bass-line riff in John Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme' is definitely worth a mention.
Here's a cool version of that tune being covered by John Mclaughlin & Carlos Santana
