Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Yeah, I could go for one of those sitting in the basement.  I've seen some pictures of their version, a while back.  There are a few teams which have some serious setups going, now that software and hardware has become much more realistic.  Motion simulation has also come into play, heavily.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

This Saturday (Sept. 8) I should be racing round 3 of the CESCS at the Homestead-Miami road course B.
The broadcast crew should be good to go for this one, unless they have another last minute issue.  I'm running the BCC AFTERGLOW scheme again.  Once the dust settled from the scoring issues of round 2, I have ended up being in a tie for second in the ST class standings and just 5 points out of first place.  The big chore will be staying out of the way of the Mustang GT class cars, which will be much quicker overall.

Here is a small clip of a practice lap with various form of info included.  My capture system is being a bit edgy so there is a slight stutter every now and then.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Good fun Chuck.

I checked out the HPD lap of Brands. Does it have 7 gears? was checking out the changes. I know Brands like the back of my hand. The rendering of it is good, but unless that HPD has the suspension of a Rolls then they've chosen not to put in the bumps!

Paddock hill looked good with the off camber drop away but hill needs to be steeper! Its like looking up a cliff there in reality. Druids is 1st gear and soooo slow but the HPD seemed too quick through there. I loved it though. It if does have 7 shifts then taking Hawthorns and then Westfield in top is a brave man.

Thats where Mr. Purley caused me to change underwear afterwards. Excellent graphics overall though, really superb. Just the soundtrack has me salivating.....

Have you started an Iracing thread? Think we need too, to avoid annoying the other F1 fans with all this

And Alex Zanardi does it again. Another gold medal with a final sprint to win by a second.

Remarkable man as we said before. To be honest they all deserve gold medals. Alex' story might be more well known but all them have their own story and their own triumph over tragedy.

Just bloody well done - all of you

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Hey Mike,  Alex and all of them are an inspiration.  One of the guys that does commentary on the iRacing broadcasts, for the road series, is at Brands covering the event for one of the magazines he writes for.  He has been getting some great pictures and has already posted that it has been an amazing event to be around.

On the HPD, it can be set up very rigid and stiff for tracks like Brands or Mosport.  With the combination of massive down force, suspension stiffness, dampening and ride height, it is one of the most stable cars on the service.

I will set a thread up for future sim related posts, which will include more Joe B. centric schemes, very soon.

On an F-1 note, 8 am est US Saturday for live coverage of Spanish GP qualifying. Should be another fun session.

Interesting front row. Looking forward to them going green.

Big Button fan but I think Hamilton is pumped this weekend from all the contact talk. I think he will edge it in the end. Don't discount Alonso for third. big_smile

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Yeah if he can keep away from the drama moments it may just be Hamilton's day.  Monza has a way of disrupting the best laid plans though.  Still one of my favorite launches in F-1.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

I daresay when most people turn on to watch F1 their thoughts don't necesarily turn to who is organising the medical cover.

Interesting then that for the insiders and fans of the sport Prof. Sid Watkins was awell known and respected name. For many years he was at the track, in one of the medical cars rushing to the scene when an accident occurred.

He has been on hand personally to save the lives of numerous drivers. But in a 33 year F1/motorpsort career it is probably his work away from the track where he has had the most impact.

Todays single seaters at all levels have benefitted from his work with the FIA and as a result many of todays drivers owe him their lives.

Change is never easy, especially when it costs cash. Jackie Stewart found that out when he started his crusade for better safety in the '70's. As a driver at the time he just didn't have the technical clout. Sid Watkins had the advantage of being a top neurosurgeon plus he had the endorsement of Bernie Ecclestone. Bernie believed in Sid, and so Sid got the job done, for 33 years.

It was a lot to do with his work on advising on driver safety, car design, circuit facilities and training that ensured no driver died in F1 for 11 years before that fateful weekend at Imola in '94. Saving Barrichello's life one minute and then witnessing Ratzenburger's death the next. If that showed him that work still needed to be done, the next day confimed it. Senna's death must have been an enormous blow, especially after trying to pursuade him to retire the day before at the scene of Ratzenburger's accident.

Sid Waktins spent the following 11 years ensuring it didn't happen again.

Is it too much to say that one man deserves all the credit for this? No it isn't, and there probably isn't a person in the sport that would disagree.

A giant of man in the world of motosport has passed. Now, 18 years later Sid, you should hook up with Ayrton and go fishing. Just as you asked him to on that fateful day in '94.

RIP Prof. Sid Watkins....and thank you.

A great man. His work stretched across the pond and influenced many of the driver safety rules here as well.
That is a very nice accolade Mike. May he go fishing with Senna.

This has been a fun qing session so far.  I'd like to see more night races in F-1. It all has such a great look to it.

No margin for error on that concrete tunnel course. Brushing that wall on the one turn looked sketchy. A good chance for mayhem again at the start! I'll be up early and tuned in.

Can't help but think Lewis Hamilton will be unstoppable. My guess for result, Hamilton then Vettell then Button. big_smile

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

What's important in F! racing is the team  NOT the car racer as is the case in motorboke racing were it's 90% the rider and 10% the bike/team. Having said that, I think Ferrari rulZ (Alonso or no Alonso:)).....as we can all see, Schumacher never won another race in F! after he left Ferrari...ponder people ponder smile:):)

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Wouldn't go that far. 50/50 maybe. Just look at Rossi and Ducati, Same with Stoner, both brilliant riders but without the machinery you will struggle. The proof will be Rossi back next year with Lorenzo on the Yamaha. A level playing field . Game on... big_smile

Wise words PS. This year the driver has never had so much to do. Sure, the car has to be decent. Mercedes have driven up a couple of blind alleys in the last 2 seasons design wise and that is one of the reason MS hasn't visited the podium top step since his Ferrari days. Another is that he is a veteran of the old impirical testing 'halycon days'. Design a new bit for the car and wheel outside the factory onto the track at Fiorano and test it, test it, test it. regardless of the cost. Can't do that any more.

F1 drivers today have to be so adept at managing tyre performance often changing or adapting their style to meet changing track conditions, or driving in traffic.

Yes, it is different from bike racing but no less compelling. The problem for F1 fans is that we, as armchair fans, can't KNOW what they are doing and how they are doing it, which is why the race expert in the commentary box is so important. To unravel the strategies being played out and the variables that are possible.

So I agree that watching a bike race is far more obvious for the viewer as to what is going on, but I find, that despite the obvious skill being displayed that sometimes drones on. This year in F1 it is often a strategic mayhem and the drivers are proving to be the trump card often in spite of the teams huge role.

As to the drivers I liked David Coulthards view of what yesterdays race would be like for the drivers for 2 hours in 33 degree C heat. He wrily observed "Imagine riding your bike in a sauna for two hours full pelt with your skiing gear on".

As for Ferrari, I'm not a hater, far from it, but I dislike organizations that are overtly political. They consider themselves bigger than the sport and during Luca's and Todt's time in charge they actually subverted the sport to its detriment. In the current era they appear to be sticking to just competing and the sport is better for it, better for Ferrari too I would say.

As for the race....huge disappointment for Lewis. Did everything right but just bad luck. Vettel had it last time out Button too and Alonso in Spa. It happens. Seems to be Alonso's to lose and Vettels to win. I wouldn't back against him (Vettel) although I would like to see Alonso take the crown. He would be a deserving 3 time champion. He is currently the best driver out there. A fine margin between them all, but as the great all rounder with a killer instinct in all circumstances....currently he is the man.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Not one of my favourite races in the calendar.  I think the whole night-time racing is a gimmick too far and the circuit itself is a little boring with few genuine opportunities to overtake.  This was a long one though, not many races last the full 2 hour time limit and as Vettel himself said it just seemed to go on for ever.

As a Ferrari tifosa it was great to see Alonso retain his spot on the leaderboard.  Has he had a personality transplant this year??? He seems a little less sullen than in previous years and I've even seen him smile and joke a few times.  As you say Mike, the championship this year is his to lose, but there's 6 races left of this season and it's close between 2nd and 6th place.  All it takes is for a mechanical failure or an accident for someone else to pick up 25 points.  Personally I'd love to see Kimi stay in the top three.

Disappointment for Lewis just when he needs a fillip to keep his career at McLaren on track but onwards and upwards to Suzuka in Japan which has certainly suited the McLarens in the past.
