(This is not at all being said in a disingenuous way) but actually with a population of 314 million, sophisticated elite programs across numerous sports and backed by the resources of the world's highest GDP, I don't think I would ever have expected anything else wink  You won - congrats smile

And London, you did a great job - congrats too!

Thanks Shadowblue - that coming from an Aussie,(I presume?) is praise indeed!
If Oz had converted some of the silvers you won into Golds .. your final position would have looked a lot different!
Have you had a bashing, or a backlash from your media?

Credit where it's due. It's a really great show. I had enjoyed Sydney incredibly - the vibe in the city was just awesome. The London venues looked brilliant, having the 'outside' events continually running past the Palace and up The Mall, etc. Quaint "toffee" sounding names like Eton Dorney wink

Yeah, our media has been crapping itself with the "what went wrong?" stuff right from the start. Who cares?

I'm not disappointed really. We've got 22 million here, still ended up in the top 10 and only 6 countries finished with more medals. There was at least half a dozen close things where where our silvers could have easily been gold.

I just like seeing great performances by my follow human beings. Bolt - what can you say? Phelps?

I think my lasting remembered image of these games (apart from Brian May) was where, with the right camera angle in the BMX, it looked like the scene in ET where the kids ride off into the air...

Re: London 2012 Olympics & Paralympics

quite interesting hearing the medals to population discussion as it is something that I have been thinking about in relation to Brasil, - and the very poor results that Brasil got and what they are going to do about turning things around for 4 years time.

Their problem is that the Country is mad keen on two things... football and carnival, and that is about it. Other sports are very much in the minority and participation is only really open to the rich.... I think Brasil also has a hell of a challenge with requirement for unpaid volunteers, - I know a lot of the carnival support staff are unpaid but it will be very evident to Brasilians that there is a hell of a lot of money surrounding the Olympics..

Re: London 2012 Olympics & Paralympics

This topic seems have dropped of the radar now the "Olympics" have finished. Just a reminder that the Paralympics are about to get under way.

Watch and be amazed, inspired, humbled, brought to tears and more.

No matter how far you try to push the envelope, it remains stationery

Re: London 2012 Olympics & Paralympics

So, after going to the Olympic Park yesterday - i have to say, what a great day it was! The transport  was hassle free, no queuing, the atmosphere, very chilled, but be prepared to wear your walking shoes - the park is massive!
Not sure who'll be renting the stadium after the Games, whoever, they may have trouble filling it - week in, week out. imo

Aside - i heard this morning, the US network NBC have chosen not to cover the Paralympic Games live - if true - shame on them!

Having been in the States for the Olympics their coverage was pretty dire anyway. Little live stuff, hundreds of breaks for other stuff. They even put a new sitcom in at the end of the closing ceremony, then local news before you could watch the Who. I love the States in so many ways but their tv is terrible. Long live the likes of BBC. Channel 4 coverage so far is also excellent in the most part.

Sorry you had to endure the coverage here. All you say is true. Paralympics coverage here is zilch. They pay lip service to the handicapped when it suits them but not when money's  to be made. Nonstop lies from the pols promising things will be better if we'd only give another chance and pap for the masses on the dole seems to be the de rigeur fodder lately.

Remarkable stuff going on here. I have watched more of the Paralympics than the Olympics themselves. I can't believe the turnout and audience for these games here. Those countries that have little coverage should be ashamed.

Re: London 2012 Olympics & Paralympics

my pointless question for the day:

for the UK viewers on channel 4 (might be heard on other stations); - the music that you hear played in the stadiums between events or at the start of a medal ceremony as they walk out.... I am pretty sure it is the chord progression from "Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon but with a variation thrown in so as not to pay the royalty, - anybody else notice?
