Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

I got to see the surfboard presentation, very nice gift that will no doubt end up in his trophy/awards room. I thought he had a homer there on the shot to left field but he just didn't get enough loft on it. Alas, Stults was too much for us and we drop another.

Sorry about that result. I know you guys need the wins. Pads are playing good ball ever since June. Hope we can do some damage to a few front runners before the season ends. Last visit by Chipper. I loved to see him play. Only got to listen on the radio but they paint a good picture. TV impasse continues. mad

Thanks to the Padres for their invaluable assistance in recent days. big_smile

Harper adds third homer in two games as the Nats rediscover their bats and reclaim top position from the Reds, Edwin Jackson fans 10, and the Nats pitching staff have now surpassed previous full season strike out totals with 32 games still to go!! big_smile

What's the matter guys? Is everybody else's team losing? lol

NAT-IT-UDE!!

18-1 in two games against the 'World Champions', Gio pitched his first complete game shutout, and I was able to enjoy every moment in HD thanks to it having been the MLB free game of the week. It is now ridiculously late, but I'll hit my bed with a smile. Good night, sports fans. big_smile

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Ok, so why does Strasburg (2 H, 0 ER, 9 K) not get the win when he leaves after six innings with the Nats in the lead? I don't know the rules well enough to understand this anomaly.

It was announced tonight that he would last pitch on Sept. 12, which is probably wise for his arm and his future, but an absolute killer for a team with aspirations that now exceed 'merely' winning a pennant. If you're not sure how truly awesome Strasburg's stats are, just have a good look at this - http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/pitching/_/sort/strikeouts

Nats/O's fans are starting to fantasize about the possibility of an I-95 Beltway Series! big_smile

What a fantastic climax to your game tonight, Tres. I just followed the ninth inning on text while writing this and can only bow deeply towards Chipper! I still think that you can forget the pennant though - the Nats next seven games are at home against the Cubs and Marlins - I would be majorly disappointed if they lost more than one of these next seven, and anyway, with our luck this season you seem to lose whenever we do.

The rule is the lead must be held. If there are runners on base when he is relieved, they count as his if they score. If the team loses the lead or is tied, the pitcher of record is the one pitching at the time. I figured the team would follow the stats and doctors orders. Too much money involved down the line. Good luck without his arm in post season play. His record lately indicated tired arm syndrome setting in.

I get it, kind of....I think...Strasburg left no one on base, but the Nats lost, then re-gained the lead after he left the game. He did all the hard work, just doesn't seem right somehow that he doesn't get the win.

Another particularly fine day for the Beltway Boys - the Nats beat the Cubs and go to .612, while the O's won and Tampa beat the Yankees so that the O's are now only one game behind. Exciting stuff! tongue

Yes George, those pitcher of record rules are a bit arcane. I've seen a pitcher toss zeros for 9 innings and a reliever make one pitch and get the win. I'd love to see the O's make a strong run. Any day the Yankees don't make post season play is a goodun in my book. big_smile

Agreed! big_smile

Any year that any Washington baseball team makes the post-season is a memorable one. Any year that achieves any more than that is a very rare event indeed! I think that all of you baseball fans should get four-square behind the Nats ( as long as there's no conflict with your own teams, natch) - why?

The Nats are dominating almost every meaningful stat in baseball.

Everybody knows how good their pitching has been.

They have been the stingiest team in baseball since the start of the season as far as conceding runs goes .

They have most away wins.

They are 59-17 when they score first!

They have Bryce Harper (19! - .254 - 15 HR - 45 RBI), who yesterday again scored from first on a single, and who is just so much fun to watch, whether he's batting, in the field, or running bases. I'm convinced that his mere presence and enthusiasm motivates the rest of them.

Yesterday's win (82-52) clinched the first winning season for a Washington team since 1969!

A Washington team last won the pennant in 1933.

A Washington team last won the World Series in 1924.

Enough good reasons? It's gotta be our year, shirley? big_smile cool

Ride that wagon while it's rolling. It's a loooong time between laps. Good shot at the pennant this year for sure.

1924? So, 83 years with a bunch of those years where there was no team in Washington.
I may wind up cheering for the Nats if the White Sox get bumped, but I'm from Chicago, so it won't be out of any sympathy. Let me know when the pass the century mark, lol!

Well, last night was totally excellent for me, every game of interest went 'my way'. cool

The way the Nats battered the Cubs was not really surprising in view of their respective records and stats, but the hammering of the Sox by the ex Senators must have been a huge surprise and shock to all concerned.

The Nats' six homers last night tied their record that they set at Camden Yards last year, and was the first such occurrence in DC in the more than 600 games played there since baseball returned to the capital in 2005. The Cubs starter was blown away in the second inning after giving up five runs on eight hits! They followed him with seven more rookies!

With last night's win and Texas' loss, the Nats now also lead baseball in run difference at +120! Only 20 more games needed to officially clinch the division title. There's some serious Natitude going down in DC. big_smile

Big congrats to the O's too, those damn Yankees are collapsing at just the right time, which brings the (remote) possibility of a Beltway World Series ever closer! cool

Hung one on the FD's last night and JDawg's boys didn't take advantage. hmm  Pads playing them tough with both the last games going 11 innings. 3b Chase Headley is on fire. NL player of the month, leading the league in HR's and RBI in Aug! 14 dingers and 41 RBI since the AS break. One of the few bright spots in an otherwise forgettable year with injuries decimating the lineup all season. He was the subject of heavy trade rumors before the deadline and we're thankful this guy is still here. Hopefully the new owners will recognize he is a franchise player now and hang on to him.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

I havent been on this thread in quite awhile...so.....first things first.....yall can hate the Yanks all you want, they still have more championships than ANYONE!!....and NO they havent bought them all, in fact most off them were well before free agency in 1974, those are facts...so keep hating, and that slide there in, we just brush those crums off, we never ever panic....yes I said we, cuz Shreddy is a die hard Yankee since he can remember smile .....HEY!!!....not nice, I heard what you just said about me roll .....now lets get to the Nationals....Rizzo, Johnson and whomever made the decision to shut down Stephen (he dont need a last name, we ALL kinow who he is) is and idiot!!....why?....because his arm is fine....no pain....velocity is great...his era shows it.....the odds of the Nats winning the World Series may never be greater than the present....and what about the rest of his teamates, how do they feel about it?....come on Nats, do the right thing, your fans are begging you too....Chris Medlin of the Braves had the Tommy about the same time as Steve if my memory serves me, look at how the Braves have handled him, the cat can really pitch, and will CONTINUE, the Braves are not talking about throwing away a great opportunty....now lets finish with the Gigantes....they will win the division!....but need to settle on a main man to close, closer by commitee will not work, Bochy, Rags and the rest of the Giants better get there schitt together....there is only one team I truly dislike, and I will NEVER EVER change my tune......the DODGERS SUCK!!!!!!!!....back to your regular program
