That is a nice story, I'll keep a look out for him since we are regular NL east foes. C'mon down now Padres, we need some wins to keep pace with the Nats who just don't lose that often. It's frustrating, we win and they win, and when they lose like yesterday we cannot find a way to win.

Monday night, already looking down on the rest of the major leagues, the Washington Nationals displayed the full extent of their substantial might. They opposed the National League ERA leader and scored two touchdowns worth of runs by the fifth inning, extra points included. Their starter came off a complete game and yielded nothing for six innings. They faced a first-place team and picked their bones clean.

These Nationals can no longer be considered merely an ascendant overachiever. They are a juggernaut, a fact reinforced with jaw-dropping clarity during their 14-2 bludgeoning of the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park, which matched the largest margin of victory since baseball returned to Washington.

Gonzalez (15-6) tied a Nationals record for wins in a season, boosted by Washington's highest-scoring game of the season.

NL ERA leader Ryan Vogelsong (10-6) allowed eight runs and nine hits in 2 2/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season.

By the end of the night, the Nationals had ratcheted Vogelsong’s ERA from 2.27 to 2.72, which left Jordan Zimmermann, Tuesday night’s starter, with the NL lead at 2.35. The victory, combined with the Atlanta Braves’ loss to the San Diego Padres, pushed the Nationals’ edge to 5 ½ games in the National League East, a new high this season and tying their largest lead since baseball returned to Washington.

The Nationals led 14-0 in the fifth inning and won for the 11th time in 13 games. They are 7-1 on this road trip.

Washington has won 13 of 14 road games and owns the best road winning percentage in the majors. The Nationals have scored a major league-best 170 runs since the All-Star break. The Giants are second with 153. The Nationals have outscored San Francisco 38-14 in four games, all wins, this season.

The 21 hits were most by a visiting team at AT&T Park.

Sorry Tres, not a lot of help last night. Everything was goin' the Nats way. I think they may have set a record for infield hits on bang/bang plays(which got Bochy tossed in the 3rd) to balls banging off of players. Just a wierd chain of events, doubt it can any worse tonight??????

Have to agree, Dawg. It was one of those one-off fluke games where absolutely everything goes right, including all those unbelievable infield hits...plus, a pitcher who was right in the groove. I've seen them go weeks without reaching 21 hits!

Anything could happen tonight - and probably will - I'll have to hope for decent highlights tomorrow.

Rob made his major league debut last night for the Marlins.  0-3 batting, but did well behind the plate.
