Pads have been frisky lately but don't hold your breath for help. lol
This is still a AAA team in big league garb. roll
We hope the sale is approved and the O'Malley and Mickleson dough will cough up a winner, but not this year. hmm

I'm hopin' as much as you are Tres that the Giants will help you out big time starting tonight!!! Hunter Pence's bat finally came to the rescue yesterday with a 3 run bomb in the 8th to put the Gi's up for good. Posey is the hottest hitter in the league since the break and Scutaro has been so hot since coming over that Bochy has a dilemna as to where to put him when The Panda returns from the DL tonight. Scutaro had a 7 RBI game against StL 5 days ago! The bullpen has stepped it up lately too. Time for some payback!!!

We need all the help we can get Dawg, it's about time they had to play somebody with a decent record. Side note, after his horrific June and most of July, Dan Uggla shows signs of turning it around now. His fielding remains superb.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

We're starting Stulz tonight Tres, a good lefty. Look out for Headley who's been on a h.r.  tear lately. I don't know who's catching. Hundley is back up from his sojourn to AAA with a fresh gut check attitude. Great behind the plate defensively but his hitting was atrocious. He may get a defensive start since Minor has a good era, though he's given up more dingers than one would like. It may end up a low scoring game.  Pads dropped one finally to the Pirates glee, since they had taken 11 straight in the Pirates house. big_smile As usual, no home tv. Sigh, the cable wars continue...

edit: Listened in the old fashioned way. AM radio. Sorry Tres, Stulz had your number and I warned ya about Headley. That kid has a big time career ahead of him.

Tonight was the first game on this road trip that I was unable to follow at all due to the time difference. I went to bed fully expecting a possible/probable loss and couldn't really believe my eyes when I checked the result this morning. Wow, these Nats are going from hot to hotter and are really starting to look like the real deal at 621. and +108 runs! They're breaking some kind of record with every game now. Here are a few mightily impressive stats -

Monday night, already looking down on the rest of the major leagues, the Washington Nationals displayed the full extent of their substantial might. They opposed the National League ERA leader and scored two touchdowns worth of runs by the fifth inning, extra points included. Their starter came off a complete game and yielded nothing for six innings. They faced a first-place team and picked their bones clean.

These Nationals can no longer be considered merely an ascendant overachiever. They are a juggernaut, a fact reinforced with jaw-dropping clarity during their 14-2 bludgeoning of the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park, which matched the largest margin of victory since baseball returned to Washington.

Gonzalez (15-6) tied a Nationals record for wins in a season, boosted by Washington's highest-scoring game of the season.

NL ERA leader Ryan Vogelsong (10-6) allowed eight runs and nine hits in 2 2/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season.

By the end of the night, the Nationals had ratcheted Vogelsong’s ERA from 2.27 to 2.72, which left Jordan Zimmermann, Tuesday night’s starter, with the NL lead at 2.35. The victory, combined with the Atlanta Braves’ loss to the San Diego Padres, pushed the Nationals’ edge to 5 ½ games in the National League East, a new high this season and tying their largest lead since baseball returned to Washington.

The Nationals led 14-0 in the fifth inning and won for the 11th time in 13 games. They are 7-1 on this road trip.

Washington has won 13 of 14 road games and owns the best road winning percentage in the majors. The Nationals have scored a major league-best 170 runs since the All-Star break. The Giants are second with 153. The Nationals have outscored San Francisco 38-14 in four games, all wins, this season.

The 21 hits were most by a visiting team at AT&T Park.

edit - have just discovered that ESPN America is showing this game (commercial free!) at 6:30 this evening my time! I'm also getting what should be a thriller between Strasburg and Lincecum live on Wednesday, at a time that I can watch. cool

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Sorry Tres, not a lot of help last night. Everything was goin' the Nats way. I think they may have set a record for infield hits on bang/bang plays(which got Bochy tossed in the 3rd) to balls banging off of players. Just a wierd chain of events, doubt it can any worse tonight??????

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

that's OK, we couldn't help ourselves against Stults who was in the zone. I noticed his location was really good in the first inning and kinda went uh-oh, not good for us. them Nats sure do get a lot of luck it seems, but then they say you make your own. DON'T pitch to Morse, or Zimmerman, or .... !!! smile

Have to agree, Dawg. It was one of those one-off fluke games where absolutely everything goes right, including all those unbelievable infield hits...plus, a pitcher who was right in the groove. I've seen them go weeks without reaching 21 hits! big_smile

Anything could happen tonight - and probably will - I'll have to hope for decent highlights tomorrow.

Did you see Brandon Belt's liner up the middle that almost took Gio's head off? Just an eyelash away from an ugly injury, actually he got a little leather on it in an act of self-defense. As our announcer Mike Krukow says, "you can hear the ball when it's that close." Good luck tonight!

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Rob made his major league debut last night for the Marlins.  0-3 batting, but did well behind the plate.

Well Tres, you finally gained a game on us...still plenty of time for anything to happen in this unpredictable game, though I honestly don't see the Nats imploding. What do you guys think about the 'shutting down Strasburg' issue?

Incidentally, it has been 88 years since a Washington baseball team won anything - the 1924 World Series. Surely it's time to throw them a bone? tongue

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

wow, I had no idea Rob would start right away. He will be easy to keep up with, Jeff Brantley who is not related as far as I know went to my high school here in B'ham. JDawg will remember him. We won't see them again until Sept 17.

I don't see the Nats falling either, and that is the predicament with SS. Management could not forsee this run of good play, so it was easy to say you would shut him down after X amount of innings. Now they have a decision to make and not an easy one. I say throw it out the window dude, I'm going for the gold and his arm is just going to have to take the beating. But if something WERE to happen there would be much weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

You're welcome Tres and yes I remember Jeff Brantley and wondered immediately if he was related, but quickly noticed their names are spelled differently. The Giants found a way to score on Wash. by getting into their bullpen. Its not easy getting past their starters though. G Dawg, it has been a long drought for D.C. ball clubs and it was also pointed out last night during the broadcast that Mgr. Davey Johnson is one of the winngest mgrs. since 1950 not to win a world series. Never say never! Rubber match today.

Here's a little quiz from the wonderful world of obscure baseball stats for you guys - what is taking place at the Phillies at Marlins game being played right now that hasn't occurred since 1963?

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

aw, say it ain't so Melky, terrible judgement exercised. I cannot believe he took whatever it was, but 50 games (do we have that many left?) is devastating for the Giants when he's hitting .340 something. And all star game MVP, embarrassing!

I'll wait for jdawg and Rick to try before I reveal the answer....kind of handy having Cabrera literally disappear just before the game. lol

Nats up 4-2 in the 5th.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Devastating news today. Testosterone is what he was using. The Giants beat writer, Andrew Baggarly (recent Jeopardy Champion), hinted about this back in June, but couldn't produce solid evidence, that's about the time contract talks broke off. The Giants only have 45 games left and if they make the playoffs each game they play counts off of his suspension. It's possible, but a long shot that he'll play again this season. He shot himself in the wallet being in a contract year, good luck Melky convincing GM's those numbers were for real. The Giants don't live & die by one player though, if they're meant to win it this year they will with or w/o the Melkman. Tres, the BA was @ .346 and it's possible he could win the batting title if nobody finishes higher at the end of the season, depending on any technicality.
