Topic: RocknBlues Fest...Winters, Derringer, Kim Simmonds...sans Leslie West
Leslie couldnt make it due to medical issues, major bummer since that was who I was really going to see. In exchange I was floored by someone I wasn't going to see...in fact didnt know existed. More on him later.
Kim Simmonds was solid, still bringing the Savoy Brown sound and playing great.
Rick Derringer...still the Hang on Sloopy/Hoochie Koo kid, despite showing his age.
Edgar Winter Band...Edgar is still in great voice, and a fine saxaphone player. Frankenstein is still the monster I remember from the Fillmore days, though technical problems trashed the keyboard and sax for the close. He played 3 songs from the latest CD "Rebel Road" and they sounded great...my next buy.
Backing all three was Edgar Winter's band. Koko Powell is a terrific bass player, Jason Carpenter a hard rocking drummer.
But lead guitarist for EWB and backup for the other acts, Doug Rappaport is a freaking amazing guitar player...seriously upstaging tonights guitar legends with every style of guitar you could want to hear. A lot of his tone and phrasing reminds of a certain JB guy, they obviously listened to the same music when forging their own way. There were glimpses of just how good is backing up KS and RD, but when he moved out front to play lead he nearly stole the show away from Edgar, tough to do!
I dont know if he has any of his own material out, but whatever there is (including however many with EWB) Im buying. If this tour comes near you go just to hear him.
Johnny Winter...still the consummate Texas bluesman. Pretty much confined to a chair, almost motionless except for his fingers hands and arms his set was reduced somewhat to nostalgia, not feeling as current as Edgar. Enjoyable, and seeing rock royalty will never grow old.
MIA...RickB, and I owed him a few drinks, dammit!
