Topic: RocknBlues Fest...Winters, Derringer, Kim Simmonds...sans Leslie West

Leslie couldnt make it due to medical issues, major bummer since that was who I was really going to see. In exchange I was floored by someone I wasn't going to see...in fact didnt know existed. More on him later.

Kim Simmonds was solid, still bringing the Savoy Brown sound and playing great.
Rick Derringer...still the Hang on Sloopy/Hoochie Koo kid, despite showing his age.
Edgar Winter Band...Edgar is still in great voice, and a fine saxaphone player. Frankenstein is still the monster I remember from the Fillmore days, though technical problems trashed the keyboard and sax for the close. He played 3 songs from the latest CD  "Rebel Road" and they sounded great...my next buy.

Backing all three was Edgar Winter's band. Koko Powell is a terrific bass player, Jason Carpenter a hard rocking drummer.

But lead guitarist for EWB and backup for the other acts,  Doug Rappaport is a freaking amazing guitar player...seriously upstaging tonights guitar legends with every style of guitar you could want to hear. A lot of his tone and phrasing reminds of a certain JB guy, they obviously listened to the same music when forging their own way. There were glimpses of just how good is backing up KS and RD, but when he moved out front to play lead he nearly stole the show away from Edgar, tough to do!

I dont know if he has any of his own material out, but whatever there is (including however many with EWB) Im buying. If this tour comes near you go just to hear him.

Johnny Winter...still the consummate Texas bluesman. Pretty much confined to a chair, almost motionless except for his fingers  hands and arms his set was reduced somewhat to nostalgia, not feeling as current as Edgar. Enjoyable, and seeing rock royalty will never grow old.

MIA...RickB, and I owed him a few drinks, dammit!

Missed you too! We were there but got in about 10 mins after the show started up since the wife was unable to break away from work, leading to a late start. Left my phone in the car so didn't get the text until this am.

I agree on everything you said. Doug Rappaport was truly amazing, we were surprised how good Edgar Winter and his band still are. Lots of energy and great vocals from all. A fun nostalgia show with all the hits from the bands. The over long scat and response was the only thing that Edgar and Doug did that seemrd too much, but I figured that was a filler for the missing act. It was a shame West couldn't make it, I knew he was mia from a bud who called me from the Mammoth show where the group played the night before. Johnny Winter pretty much went through the motions and we thought it was past time for him to retire, but respect for who he is no less. His closing encores with slide were much better imo.

We had a blast and enjoyed the gig. I even caught the wife doing the sing along to Hang on Sloopy, though she claimed to have missed these bands in her youth. wink

Thought you had said you were 4th row...we looked for you at the breaks but couldnt find you. I had the best seat in the house...5th row, dead center on the center aisle, no seat in front of me so I could stretch out my legs.

The Tobacco Road scat/response is standard EWB, maybe extended a little for last night but not much. The real problem I had with that is that the response wasnt always that close to the call. I misspelled Doug's last name..its Rappoport. Pretty sparse FB page, he is definitely way under the radar for someone so good. I doubt many who arent  EW fans or run into EWB at a show like this knows him at all. Im looking through his channel for something really representative to link here. Everything Ive seen so far is really good, but a lot of technical runs that arent as musical as he was last night.

It was interesting that the bass player was highlighted with brief covers of classic bass lines, much like Kasim Sulton was at BOC. A lot of Who and Iron Butterfly fans from the response last night!

We agree about JW then. My take is he is the headliner out of respect from Edgar, but the EWB and Edgar himself were the real stars. That led to a bit of a tail off, instead of finishing with strength. more than a few people leaving in the middle of JW on a Saturday night.  I still like his playing better than the Stones on Gimme Shelter, Jumpin Jack Flash and ...what was the third "cover"?

Good call going not eating at the Grove...the only thing I wanted they had run out of by 7, everything pretty mediocre.

Savoy Brown is at the Coach House 10/12. Im probably headed up to Staples for the Rangers/Kings game that night..if not KS is definitely worth heading over there for.

LW missed Tacoma a few nights ago too, but I wasnt sure if he was ever scheduled for that one. Nothing that Ive seen on his FB page yet.

Re: RocknBlues Fest...Winters, Derringer, Kim Simmonds...sans Leslie West

I found out about the show when I was buying tickets to see Joe Walsh. I was going to treat myself to the show for my B-Day but I signed up to work some much needed overtime instead. It sound like a great show, it’s too bad that I will miss it. I hope to catch some clips on Youtube.

Take care,
Bill

Depending on where in NorCal you'll be this week the temps will be low 60's on the coast to low 90's inland by Thur. Really doesn't matter where you're at up here a quality brewery is near by.

Walnut Creek...cuban beer and lechon at Havana Cafe

BTW the guy I mentioned in PM says he knows your name from some Dead boards, but didnt know Peter Barsotti personally.

Walnut Creek? that's a pretty rough 'hood, LOL! That's where I grew up. Expect the higher temps there in the Diablo Valley, that's why I live in Benicia! BTW, didn't receive a PM, try e-mail. Curious who the guy is, as I don't chat on any Dead boards.
