Topic: Dr. Z Speaker Combination

Some models of the Dr. Z Amps use a speaker combination of a Celestion Vintage 30 (60watts) and the Celestion G12H Anniversary (30 watts), does anyone have an opinion on this speaker combination?

I have a 2x12 cab that I am looking to replace the speakers.  I am playing with a Marshall YJM (100 or 50 watt Plexi) or Sovtek Mig 50.  I usually keep the YJM in 50 watt mode.

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

No opinion on these speakers, I just wanted to say I've had a MAX 38 Studio Deluxe for 10 years and it's an amazing amp.  Love, love, love my Dr. Z.  That is all... carry on with the thread...

How do you like the YJM?  They seem pretty slick, and sound cool from what I can tell on Youtube.  Haven't had a chance to try one in person.

Re: Dr. Z Speaker Combination

I have a Z Best 2x12 by Dr Z with the speakers you mentioned. I gotta tell you it is a great sounding speaker/cab combo. Problem is I've never tried other speakers in it. The cabinet itself is very well designed. I do not like the V30 by itself but with the G12H I love it. They do seem to match up very well. The Z Best is a closed back cab like most Marshalls ( the one in my avitar is a 2x10) which of course means a lot to the tone of the cabinet.

I really do like the YJM a lot and the more I play the more it amazes me.  First, all Plexi amps are loud, really really loud.  I do like the EPA because it reduces the power before it reaches the tubes so there is less stress on them compared to a standard attenuator which reduces power after the tubes have been lit up.  Sadly all types of attenuators effect tone and so it is something we need to just live with.  The effects loop is a great addition and I like the reverb.  I'm not a fan of the boost so I use my own pedals but the noise gate is top notch.

For the most part I have everything dialed in on the back controls and rarely adjust them unless I am moving from 50watts to 100 or dialing in the epa to adjust for conditions.  Marshall used the big box for this head so if you are using a slant cabinet be careful for there is no room for error.  Marshall does recommend using the "B" cabinet.

All in all it is a great amp and a real head-turner when you bump it to 100 watts for a couple of bars...sound guys and lead singers hate me.  And I really love playing my Tele's through the YJM, they almost sound like different guitars.

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

They seem like a beast of an amp. I'm glad they FINALLY realized they could keep a classic look on the front and add a few goodies on the rear instead. Hate the look of a bunch of little buttons, switches and even double stacked rows of knobs on the front of a Marshall. I'd love to have one, but don't use the big ones I have now..

And to hell with sound guys and singers! Its an Yngiwe head, and Yngwie DOESN'T turn down for anyone!

I saw Yngwie at H.O.B. last year - 33 Marshall heads and 17 4x12 cabs.  It was ri-freaking-diculously loud.  I had earplugs in for 90% of the show, but it was still brutal.  I had a blast, though.  He put on a great show.

Thats a GREAT speaker combination. Together they make a speaker tone thats hard to beat.
If you need higher wattage speakers, I prefer the Celestion Heritage G12-65, or Scumback M75 large dust cap.

I have a 2x12 with Scumback M75 and a 4x12 with Scumback BM75 which I use with my Jubilee clone. Both M75 and BM75 are regular (not large dust cap). The M75s are well broken in and sound just glorious. The BM75 are still fairly new (about 20 hrs) and are designed to be a bit more aggressive. I like those too but would like them to become a bit warmer with a smoother top end. I'm sure they will after another 40-60 hrs of playing. You can't go wrong with Scumbacks.
