Topic: Cycling 2012

I know that there are at least three of us with an interest, so considering that the Tour of California started yesterday while the Giro is in its second week, maybe it's high time to start a topic for this year?

Most big 'name' riders who are not sick or injured (Cancellara, Hushovd) are in California, while most Italian riders, surprisingly, are in Italy. big_smile

Today's stage 2 -

Monday, May 14
STAGE 2

START: San Francisco
Dista nce: 117.1 miles
SPRINTS: Pacifica, Half Moon Bay, Summit Rd.
KOMs: Empire Grade, Bear Creek
FINISH: Santa Cruz County

Stage 2 is a cakewalk compared to Stage 3 tomorrow. San Jose>Livermore>Danville>up Mt. Diablo(3864 Ft.)>Down to Walnut Creek>Clayton>Back to Livermore finish. Racing down Mt. Diablo is 10x's harrier than the ascent due to a very winding road full of hairpin turns.

Re: Cycling 2012

I'll be watching when I can. Disappointed that the San Diego area is shunned again. I guess that hors climb up Palomar was not well received with the finish then on a 5 mile killer 3% grade with no rest, which took out the sprinters before they had a chance.

Re: Cycling 2012

Hmmm, got nothin' goin' work wise today. Just might head to my old neighborhood in Walnut Creek and catch the riders as they come off the "technical descent" on Mt. Diablo. What the hell, there's a few favorite watering holes just off the course. The thing that blows my mind is they leave San Jose @ 11:15am and are expected to finish around 4pm!!! This stage would take me 2 days if it didn't kill me first, LOL!

Re: Cycling 2012

I'll post a link to the climax of today's Giro stage, which finished uphill through the medieval alleys of Assisi - astonishing geography and some amazing riding.

By contrast, as Jdawg said, today's ToC stage features a serious climb. The live tv coverage is on here between around 11 pm and 1 am. Last night was definitely worth staying up for, some spectacular scenery, young and unknown names in the picture, and yet another pretty easy victory for Peter Sagan, who looks like he could own this race if he can avoid losing too much time on the steepest climbs.

Two exciting stage races on simultaneously, happy days. cool

A Bonabuddy Doug & I decided to catch the sprint through Clayton as they head toward the finish in Livermore, better watering holes in Clayton. Gotta run, don't wanna miss out.

Re: Cycling 2012

G Dawg, hit my FB page for a great pic of the leaders about an hour from the finish. None of them won the stage, Pagan took it again. It was fun watchin' the guys fly by, then almost 8 min. later the pack flew by, only to catch the leaders at the end. Awesome display of cycling talent. Of course a few packs of wannabe's rode past the spectators before the real competitors showed up. Look at me, look at me, serious lack of self esteem. There's some in every crowd.

Re: Cycling 2012

Dawg, I looked for you yesterday, but the coverage was limited. My favorite sight this week was a guy standing beside the road holding a sign that read "Inspirational poster". smile  Full props to Sagan!! He hardly looks tired at the end!!  So much young talent as well as venerated "old" guys. I also give the area a 10 for beauty. Racing down Pacific Highway one minute then a turn and you're in the mountains. Stunning. This Tour warrants the praise. World Class all the way smile  Cathy

When they approached the finish line in Livermore and you could see a lot of wind turbines and vineyards, they were just a mile or two from The Altamont Pass and the speedway where the Stones played. By that time we were closer to home @ a Sports Bar watching the coverage in HD on a big screen. Pretty wild finish. The highlight was from where we stood there was a KinderCare Pre-School about 300 yds. up the road. We knew the riders were coming when we heard all the little tikes pressed up against the play yard fence shreaking at the top of their lungs, very cool.

Re: Cycling 2012

I have just witnessed one of the most fantastic day's racing ever - the Queen's stage of the Giro finishing on an absolute monster mountain - where a totally unexpected rider, Thomas de Gendt from the small Dutch Vacansoleil team, rode away from the field and hung on for a glorious victory, one that gives him an outside chance of taking the overall win after tomorrow's concluding TT.

Will post a film when available.

Re: Cycling 2012

Dang! An all nighter tending the smoker full of brisket left me creeping off to bed just when it was airing. I'd love to see the vid.
BTW, I got the coolest birthday present and used it for the first time. A dual reading programmable digital bbq thermometer/timer with wireless remote that even beeps when the fire needs tending or the food is done!  One sensor for grill temp, the other for meat temp. cool

I just watched the final 20k. It was a great ride by de Gendt, a great win for him and Vacansoleil. Should be an interesting TT tomorrow. Hopefully de Gendt can at least get on the podium after todays effort.

The witch hunt continues as Armstrong is hounded again. One wonders who's agenda is being pushed. He says he's done with it and will not defend any more charges. I don't blame him.
