Topic: Kentucky Derby 138

This Saturday is the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby, the greatest 2 minutes in sports and 1st race of the Triple Crown. I thought I would start this thread to share some of the great traditions. Saturday I will post a link for a live stream of our local station's award winning coverage. If any wants to look in on all the happenings in the infield parties, Millionaires Row, behind the scenes stories, and my favorite interviews with people wearing some of the wildest hats and outfits you've ever seen!  It's one of my traditional things to do on Derby Day. Their coverage begins at 8:30 eastern time and goes up until the national coverage begins around 5:00pm.

The derby festival is 2 weeks leading up to the race. Wednesday is the day post positions are drawn. Thursday is the Pegasus Parade, this year's Honorary Grand Marshalls UK Men's Basketball staff and the National Championship trophy! Only in Kentucky smile I'm sure there were some unhappy Louisville fans! Friday is The Kentucky Oaks, a race for the phillies, Friday night is are all of the star studded derby eve parties the most famous the Barnstable-Brown party. Ashton Kutcher one of the bigger names attending this year. Saturday morning starts with the Governor's Breakfast, free for any one that wants to attend.

This year's 3 year olds

1. Daddy Long Legs                        11. Alpha
2. Optimizer                                    12. Perspective
3. Take Charge Indy                       13. Went the Day Well
4. Union Rags                                 14. Hansen
5. Dullahan                                     15. Gemologist
6. Bodemeister                               16. El Padrino
7. Rousing Sermon                         17. Done Talking
8. Creative Cause                          18. Saber Cat
9. Trinniberg                                  19. I'll Have Another
10. Daddy Nose Bleed                    20. Liason

Bodemeister is the favorite.  My "hunch" bet (a bet that you pick only because of the name) would be Take Charge Indy, the hunch, Joe is playing in Indianapolis in Derby Day smile

Re: Kentucky Derby 138

Governors breakfast with tequila juleps sounds awesome. I can't make my picks until I see them up close coming onto the track, and look at final odds. Son and I pick 3 horses each, one a favorite by odds and then 2 backups to create a win-place-show type of deal. Neither of us have ever hit a trifecta or anything close to it, but have hit two out of three a few times.

Re: Kentucky Derby 138

Now you're talking. Horses are a big deal in Maryland too.  Point to point racing as well as track. Lot's of local farms. I plan to watch all day too. It gets me in the mood and you get tons of insight. Surround sound for full effect wink I watched the post draw, after the marathon hockey game. There are lots of possible winners this year. #15 looks good, #6 too, but as they drew numbers and talked about each entrants chances, I've decided it's anybody's race. The money will be in exacta wagers. If I was wagering, I'd still bet the longest odds to show. That's where the fun happens smile
I went to the race many years ago. The only horse I got a clear view of was ridden by an infield cop! My Preakness experiences weren't much different smile  Too poor to be in the clubhouse. So, I'm happy to watch from the comfort of home. That doesn't mean I won't wear a fancy hat. lol    Cathy

Re: Kentucky Derby 138

Well you can tell its Derby weekend! Traffic here in Lexington today was nuts. Many folks stay here and make the 90 minute drive into Louisville. The one day of the year limos are every where. I saw 4 on my way home from work. I will post live streaming link in the morning if anyone is interested, live coverage begins at 8:30 eastern time and runs until national coverage picks up at 4:00pm eastern.

Tequila juleps Jdawg? too funny, someone will probably try making those tomorrow and Tres you’re right it could be at the Governor’s Breakfast!

Cathy, awesome you have been to the Derby and Preakness. I’ve never been, usually a fun party to attend close to home. My best friend has had one for the last several years however this year she has a parent that is ill so understandably not having one. We are going to the local course Keeneland for the off track wagering in the afternoon. Always a big crowd, a tailgate atmosphere they have live bands and a huge screen in the course infield you can sit in the grand stands and watch the races. Lexington is the horse capital of the world you will have to try to make it down and visit the Kentucky Horse Park, last weekend was the Rolex 3 day event and in a few weeks is the annual High Hope Steeplechase.

Here are some links, the 138th Kentucky Oaks postponed due to heavy storms, It’s the Phillies race, Believe You Can the winner with jockey Rosie Napravnik, GIRL POWER! Here’s the full race

Some of the celebrities at the Barnstable Brown party, it seems Ashton Kutcher and Miranda Lambert kind of shunned the local media sad  Our local celebrities the National Championship UK Men’s basketball and Coach Cal making a big weekend. They were at the White House earlier today and made it back to Louisville for the party tonight!

Re: Kentucky Derby 138

I love Kentucky Derby Day as the quest for the triple crown begins. I don't get to the track much anymore but I have tons of memories there. My father was a big fan of horse racing and I as a youngster would often accompany him to either Aqueduct or Belmont here in NYC. So I've seen my share of the "greatest" horses run in some of the "greatest" races including Secratariet, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Alydar, Ruffian, Forego, the list goes on, but those horses stand out in my mind as the best I've ever seen.
Back to the Kentucky Derby present day. What we do in the wuzzy household, the mrs. and two kids, every Derby day we pick our horses from the morning paper and then bet them at OTB. Then we will have snacks in front of the tv for the pre race hype and settle down and enjoy the race. It's a nice family day. Interestingly the only way the remaining legs of the triple crown are bet is if someone hits the Derby.

  They're all in line.......

  Jack

PS - Did I tell you guys about the time I bet ten bucks to win on a horse in the Derby a few years ago, His name was Giacomo, I went with the age old handicapper technique "name recognition". Oh yeah he won, went off at 50-1.
It was a happy day in the wuzzy house that day. $$$$$$$  smile

Re: Kentucky Derby 138

My sincerest apologies the local station is not having the live stream this year sad  Very disappointing, feeling bad for my dear friend in Spain, she says watching the coverage online makes her feel a little less home sick for Derby Day. National coverage begins on NBC at 4:00pm here is a link to live stream to watch coverage there if you are outside US for television coverage.

Re: Kentucky Derby 138

Love horse racing! When I picked up the Des Moines paper that had Joe's spread in it I noticed there is an Iowa horse that is one of the favorites. Dullahan is the name and is near a 6-1. I'm with Cathy, long odds to show. I made a nice piece of change doing that on a horse owned by one of my business associates. Big Jag, a gelding sprinter. He won the Dubai Million, placed well in Breeders Cup and some other races. I always bet place and won every time. Fancy hats! Opening day here at Del Mar has all the ladies out sporting the finery. I love it!
Rick
off the topic again re Derby but my friend got Big Jag on the cheap. He was an evil horse deemed untrainable, darned near killed a groom once. He had him gelded and got him a pet goat to stable with and it traveled everywhere he went. The goat and he were best pals and it settled him down nicely. He won millions with the horse. I think he got him for $20K.

Re: Kentucky Derby 138

The only name recognition I spotted was Saber Cat, as in San Jose Saber Cats our local Arena Football team. Last night like in many years past, Letterman had Dave Johnson, who calls the race @ Churchill Downs live via telephone. His pick, Bodemeister, trained by Bob Baffert a perennial winner of Triple Crown races. Bode is Baffert's sons name.

Nothing quite like watching these majestic creatures flying around a racetrack. Nothing more sickening than seeing one of them go down in the process.

Don't we know it. Watch the Grand National in the UK. 2 or 3 top class horses put down every year.

Come on the Blades (sorry Idolbone just had to borrow your line)

Re: Kentucky Derby 138

Derby 138 was very exciting smile Congrats Fuzzy Wuzzy on your big win! I didn't have the winner sad Love the story about the horse and the jockey. It was on the news tonight, I'll Have Another is already in Baltimore getting ready for Preakness smile

Our plans changed and we met friends at a local pub for the race. It was funny, everytime they showed I'll Have Another or mentioned the horse's name everyone raised their glass and yelled "I'll Have Another!" One of the gals had stopped by Keeneland on the way there and bet it across the board smile

Another of my favorite traditions is to look at all the pics the following day, sharing 2 links of photo gallaries from local paper. Some great stuff, not sure what some of these people are thinking with these outfits!??!

Celebrity photo gallery, hopefully this opens with a photo of Anna Nicole Smith and Larry Birkhead's beautiful little girl Dannielynn with her Father. Really sweet photo smile If you remember her parents met at a Derby party.

http://www.kentucky.com/2012/05/05/2177 … elebs.html

My sister and nephew had a couple of brushes with fame at Churchill after the Oaks on Friday. Churchill Downs pays high school athletics teams to come in and clean up after the races. Great opportunity for the booster clubs to raise much needed money for the team's travel, and equipment. My nephew's golf team is assigned Millionaires Row each year. She said they are never allowed to go up while celebrities are still there but this year someone told them they could go on up. She said the parents and kids kind of stood of to the side Tom Brady walked by. My nephew is over 6' tall and the tallest standing in the group and Tom Brady said "hey how's it goin'?" to my nephew as passed by. Said my nephew was beside himself! After everyone was gone and they were cleaning she said voices came over the PA system and they thought someone was testing or employee goofing around. Then a woman's voice started singing the national anthem. When they looked outside Mary J. Blige was rehearsing for the Derby the next day so they were treated to a private performance cool

Never been, other than vicariously through Hunter S. Thompson's writings. Actually attending the event would probably be anticlimactic now tongue
