Kentucky Derby 138

I know one poster who will be all over this when she sees it.

Now you're talking. Horses are a big deal in Maryland too.  Point to point racing as well as track. Lot's of local farms. I plan to watch all day too. It gets me in the mood and you get tons of insight. Surround sound for full effect I watched the post draw, after the marathon hockey game. There are lots of possible winners this year. #15 looks good, #6 too, but as they drew numbers and talked about each entrants chances, I've decided it's anybody's race. The money will be in exacta wagers. If I was wagering, I'd still bet the longest odds to show. That's where the fun happens
  I went to the race many years ago. The only horse I got a clear view of was ridden by an infield cop! My Preakness experiences weren't much different   Too poor to be in the clubhouse. So, I'm happy to watch from the comfort of home. That doesn't mean I won't wear a fancy hat. lol    Cathy

I love Kentucky Derby Day as the quest for the triple crown begins. I don't get to the track much anymore but I have tons of memories there. My father was a big fan of horse racing and I as a youngster would often accompany him to either Aqueduct or Belmont here in NYC. So I've seen my share of the "greatest" horses run in some of the "greatest" races including Secratariet, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Alydar, Ruffian, Forego, the list goes on, but those horses stand out in my mind as the best I've ever seen.
  Back to the Kentucky Derby present day. What we do in the wuzzy household, the mrs. and two kids, every Derby day we pick our horses from the morning paper and then bet them at OTB. Then we will have snacks in front of the tv for the pre race hype and settle down and enjoy the race. It's a nice family day. Interestingly the only way the remaining legs of the triple crown are bet is if someone hits the Derby.

PS - Did I tell you guys about the time I bet ten bucks to win on a horse in the Derby a few years ago, His name was Giacomo, I went with the age old handicapper technique "name recognition". Oh yeah he won, went off at 50-1.

Love horse racing! When I picked up the Des Moines paper that had Joe's spread in it I noticed there is an Iowa horse that is one of the favorites. Dullahan is the name and is near a 6-1. I'm with Cathy, long odds to show. I made a nice piece of change doing that on a horse owned by one of my business associates. Big Jag, a gelding sprinter. He won the Dubai Million, placed well in Breeders Cup and some other races. I always bet place and won every time. Fancy hats! Opening day here at Del Mar has all the ladies out sporting the finery. I love it!

off the topic again re Derby but my friend got Big Jag on the cheap. He was an evil horse deemed untrainable, darned near killed a groom once. He had him gelded and got him a pet goat to stable with and it traveled everywhere he went. The goat and he were best pals and it settled him down nicely. He won millions with the horse. I think he got him for $20K.

The only name recognition I spotted was Saber Cat, as in San Jose Saber Cats our local Arena Football team. Last night like in many years past, Letterman had Dave Johnson, who calls the race @ Churchill Downs live via telephone. His pick, Bodemeister, trained by Bob Baffert a perennial winner of Triple Crown races. Bode is Baffert's sons name.

Derby 138 was very exciting Congrats Fuzzy Wuzzy on your big win! I didn't have the winner Love the story about the horse and the jockey. It was on the news tonight, I'll Have Another is already in Baltimore getting ready for Preakness

Our plans changed and we met friends at a local pub for the race. It was funny, everytime they showed I'll Have Another or mentioned the horse's name everyone raised their glass and yelled "I'll Have Another!" One of the gals had stopped by Keeneland on the way there and bet it across the board

Another of my favorite traditions is to look at all the pics the following day, sharing 2 links of photo gallaries from local paper. Some great stuff, not sure what some of these people are thinking with these outfits!??!

My sister and nephew had a couple of brushes with fame at Churchill after the Oaks on Friday. Churchill Downs pays high school athletics teams to come in and clean up after the races. Great opportunity for the booster clubs to raise much needed money for the team's travel, and equipment. My nephew's golf team is assigned Millionaires Row each year. She said they are never allowed to go up while celebrities are still there but this year someone told them they could go on up. She said the parents and kids kind of stood of to the side Tom Brady walked by. My nephew is over 6' tall and the tallest standing in the group and Tom Brady said "hey how's it goin'?" to my nephew as passed by. Said my nephew was beside himself! After everyone was gone and they were cleaning she said voices came over the PA system and they thought someone was testing or employee goofing around. Then a woman's voice started singing the national anthem. When they looked outside Mary J. Blige was rehearsing for the Derby the next day so they were treated to a private performance
