Re: The Football Topic

Don't know if that was one point gained or two lost. All down to the other side of the city now. Them at home to a relegated side, us away to one. If it stays the same it will by a repeat of today v Stevenage in the play off's. FUBAR

Re: The Football Topic

good news for me (I think), - it does make some sense with is overseas experience BUT... his record with Liverpool even though it was not all his responsibility was a big downer in that I think the he could not deal with the big club egos.....so that will work well for England then....NOT! - At least he has a good record with under performing struggling teams...

Re: The Football Topic

A far better choice than the saggy faced one, imo. England's under-performing players with fat egos will continue to under-perform because, quite simply, their levels of skill are inferior to many Europeans and South Americans. I can only assume that there is some fundamental flaw in how kids are taught the game in the UK, because there's no other reason that makes any sense why the Brits should be short on basic skills. Yes of course, I realize that this is a sweeping generalization - done deliberately to make the point. wink

don't start me..... :-) Too late!!! - What you say George is not a generalisation it is FACT. Speaking as an Under 13's FA qualified coach, - zzzzz sorry! There are 3 massive problems with youth football in England... - the standard of pitches because of the time of year we play.  The game is overly competitive where winning is put above development of skills which leads and is the reason for the 3rd problem; long ball game.

My boys play in a the "B" league out of 4 leagues and this is out 3rd year at 11 a-side, - actually there is a 4th reason, - 11 a-side  is played way to early at age 10/11. The first 2 seasons we finished 4th and then 5th in that league made up of 10 teams, this year we finished 2nd from bottom. Only 2 player changes in that squad, - 1 leaving and 2 new ones coming in, - 15 man squad where you can take 14 to a match so every player has dropped a gam in rotation. I have only once taken a player to a match and he has not played and that was down to the kid who did not want to go on because he was carrying a strain. I have 2 small nippy wingers on each wing and we play through our wingers, - game plan is to get those wingers running at defences and get the ball down the sides and cross in. On many occasions the pitches have been too muddy to run with a ball... We scored 50 goals but had 85 scored against us, - nearly every one of those goals against us has been either long ball or corner/free kick. The team that won the league scored 137 goes and had 30 scored against them, - without doubt they have 3/4 good players, - keeper, centre back and 1 or 2 fast competitive strikers, - rest nothing special. Going forward you can't get anything passed the keeps or the 5'10" centre back both of whom hoof it long to strikers who are just wing on the last man. Maybe it is me that is wrong but I will not exclude smaller players who have skills and I will not reset to long ball game.
The problem is that the damage is not only to the game it is also to the boys playing, - I have had a couple of players ask to be substituted because they know that they are not brave enough to head away a hoofed ball. As soon as the boys get big a lot of coachers focus on only taking big players and teach them to play long ball. We played a pre season friendly against an A league side who we had previously had a good close matches with, - got thrashed 11-nil, - because the coach had changed his team setup, - big defenders and 2 nippy strikers, - so yes the signs were there before the season, but I was and  remain stubborn to develop the boys game.

Have to disagree, Ian. I thought it was a major disappointment as a footballing spectacle, especially after all the over-hyped build-up. The handbags between the managers was just about the highlight. The general take over here is that ManU were inexplicably short of attacking ideas, and created next to no chances. Citeh were deserved winners on the night. Only question now is will Citeh drop any points to the Barcodes. If not, it's congrats to them and a season with no prizes for last year's champs.

- this is what makes the game so entertaining,- 2 people can see the exact same same game and come away with contrasting opinions, - as can managers when their player gets tackled!! - Probably most of my enjoyment (as a neutral)  was based around Kompany's excellent game, - he made such a difference, - and it will be a very sad day for the game when Fifa take away that type of spirited "get stuck in" style of play.

A disgrace! http://www.football365.com/mediawatch/7 … Mediawatch
One would have thought the Murdoch press would have learnt a lesson. Just yesterday, he[R Murdoch] was found  "not fit" to run a international company.

Couldn't agree more. Murdoch being found "unfit" comes as no surprise to those of us who have known him as the "Dirty Digger' for 30+ years, and the Sun's attempted hatchet job on Hodgson is, sadly, totally in character for what we have come to expect from any Murdoch media.

I'm surprised that you haven't shared your thoughts on Monday night's game yet, Brack.....

Re: The Football Topic

I'm pleased for Harry and Spurs that he didn't get offered the job. The headlines Brack offered up upon the press getting the news is absolutely typical.

Fact is, the job is a poisoned chalice. I think Hodgson is as good as anyone for the job. Better qualified than others that have held the post.

Our national press is a disgrace and the sports journalists that are involved in some of the reporting are men of little character or integrity.

Judging the man before he has even donned the tracksuit is disrespectful in the extreme.

Hodgson can do no worse than whats gone before. He may do better. He speaks the language, is rational and honest and a good football man to boot.

Despite what the press might say, I don't really believe 'England expects' anymore. All but the truly blind know that we are at best second rate on the international front. Capable of giving a good game on a good day, but mainly we are Shire horses running with thoroughbreds a lot of the time.

The most important appointment for England should be the guy who is responsible for the youth development centre. If Hodgson could be allowed to manage that and lay a proper foundation for the future then in 15 years we might have the same optimism the Germans have over their national team now. There is almost a constant production line of talent coming through, despite the large numbers of foreign players that play in the Bundesliga.

I'm happy to see an Englishman in the role. Roy Hodgson has my best wishes for an impossible job, made so by the media.

I wish him well and  Harry too, ' cos I think he has had an enormously lucky escape.

Ajax tonight clinched their 31st Dutch championship! cool

The Barcodes beat the Chavs at the Bridge.

Messi scored a hat-trick, taking his Primera Division total to 46, and his season's total to 68, which means that he has bagged yet another record, one held by Der Bomber, Gerd Mueller, since '73, of the most goals in all competitions in one season (67).

Happy days! big_smile

Thanks George, I had an offer and I do have some stream links. To be honest whenever I seem to watch The Irons live I jinx them and nearly end up wrecking the near vicinity in frustration.

Thankfully I have a full band rehearsal tonight so I will allow myself the opportunity to arrive home and be pleasantly surprised. We should and can win of course, but there is a certain irony about these playoffs. 3 of the teams were relegated last year, cardiff on the other hand have missed out several times after being the 3rd place team. It could just be THEIR year after all.

I shall remain hopeful and optimistic in absentia, but aware that historically we always need two seasons in the lower division.............

May the BEST team win!

A splendid 2-0 away win for the Hammers in Cardiff. I just wonder if a two goal cushion is enough to take home? roll
