Re: The Football Topic

Anyone but a Chelsea fan is possibly imbued with mischievous glee this morning at the latest managerial shenanigans at Stamford Bridge.

Fair to say we are no longer shocked at the comings and goings in modern football. Even so AVB’s sacking after just 8 months in charge is testimony to the idiots running football clubs these days.

Was he the wrong man for the job? His lack of top level experience counting against him? Maybe, but I don’t think so. There is war of words going on in the media just now, but certain reports I have read state that when Abramo-rich courted him for the job it was on the basis of rebuilding the team over time and setting the processes and players in place that would take the club forward over the next 3-5 years.

AVB obviously believed Roman’s spiel but failed to grasp that that meant winning the championship, or something, and as a minimum qualifying for the Champions League at the same time. Once again the owners long term aims are compromised by their short term ambitions.

So, wrong man for the job? No, wrong club for the man in my view. AVB, when I saw him was erudite, knowledgeable, well spoken with good English and generally open and fair in his assessments. What seems to be clear is his management style has been undermined some of the playing staff at Bridge. Those with personal agendas related to their own futures.

My best wishes to AVB. Hopefully he will find a new club that matches his own potential.

So what now for Abramo-rich? Well as he has effectively allowed the players to successfully undermine another top coach he may as well ask them who they WOULD be willing to play for – and woe betide them if they fail to step up to the plate.

I suspect Capello must be the best candidate then if it comes down to massaging player ego’s, especially if Lamps, Terry and Cole are involved.

I’d love to see David Moyes get a chance with a top club, but Chelsea is not for him. Moyes doesn’t suffer fools and that would put him immediately on a war footing with both the playing staff AND the management!

Mourinho would be interesting if only from the point he would have absolutely nothing to lose or prove. Plus he could rub the Russians nose in it and get a deal that would keep the Russian’s interfering nose out of it all. But I think Roman-rich couldn’t take that.

To be honest, who really wants the job? The side needs massive investment to keep pace with City now and that would mean ousting those playing elements that can’t hack it anymore. Someone will of course take it on; with a fat contract safe in the knowledge that everyone thinks Chelsea is a joke so that if it does go wrong there is no mud to stick and several millions in the bank.

Oh what a mess! Couldn’t happen to a nicer club………………….

Re: The Football Topic

Chelsea= joke. Absolutely  ****** ridiculous, - spoilt brat of owner should have been brought up better by his parents and got a slap on his leg from time to time when he acted in such a selfish unreasonable way....The posting was a surprise due to his age, not his ability as most people could see that the issue the club has is the older players and their hold over the team, - so it would take a more senior manager to sort them out.

Perhaps it is player power (again), - but there has to come a point where any good managers will think twice about taking up a job there, - too many good managers (actually very good) have been fired from this Club, - clearly the club (owner) is the problem and not the manager. Jose should not touch this job.

I really hope AVB (his real name is lot longer and a lot more regal) gets a top job and proves that he can do it, and goes back to Stamford Bridge and comes away with a win...

..just goes to show what a double edged sword a rich owner is.

Re: The Football Topic

I know we have often on here about how stupid modern footballers appear to be, but here is one of the most cynically stupid acts I have ever seen a footballer make.

I watched the HSV vs. VFB Stuttgart game live in a bar and despite how badly Hamburg were playing (0-3 down at home at the time), nothing could have prepared one for this.....

The opening shots show Paulo Gueurro's own fans abusing his actions. Out of frustration at his teams and his own poor performance he runs 30 metres to towards the corner flag where VFB's keeper is about to allow the ball to run out of player. There is no scoring chance, nothing to be gained whatsoever and then this..............

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJ3Wwnq8mpw

Lucky not to break the keeper's leg. Now the DFB have hit him with an 8 match ban and there will be fines from league and club, but clearly what this mans needs is medical help. I mean, it wasn't even a dirty game - HSV were too poor for that!

Re: The Football Topic

OK George, there is no question your 2nd football love will do the business this year. 7-1 against a Leverkusen side that at the weekend beat Munich 2-1.

OK you can't read to much into all this but still. After the 5 th goal the commentator revealed that Barcelona had already completed 477 uncontested passes in the match so far. 3 second half goals in a nine minute spell.

It was unreal at times. I just gave up counting the passes. OK Bayer showed way too much respect and at no time were they in Barca's faces and I think thats where you have to be.

Bayer played 4-4-2 and they was never going to work, but then again thery were behind from the first leg so had to try something. Still they did get a fine goal in 90th minute - worthy of Barca that one.......

Can't see anyone stopping this team.

The Dutch commentator was saying, 'what must Bayern be thinking?' Yes, Leverkusen didn't do themselves justice, except for that wonderful shot at the death, but few teams would have lived with Barca tonight and a Messi in this kind of form.

My commentator looked up and listed all the famous names who had scored four in a CL game (Van Basten, Van Nistelrooy, Sheva, and Messi himself with one or two more whom I forget) and then kept wondering if Messi or his teammates realized what a unique opportunity this was to be the alltime top CL scorer in one game - he kept willing him to get another and went bananas when he did. Two of Messi's five were stunning, one was just 'good', one was opportune.....but it's not just his goals, he plays the sweetest through balls and one-twos, he's got amazing insight into the game.

Van Basten in the studio came to the conclusion that amongst the phenomenons of the game, Messi did still have to equal Maradona's WC win, but that as a player in important games at the highest level, he was now already far beyond Maradona in view of what he has achieved at his age. No player has ever given me as an armchair viewer more pleasure. Ever. And he's still got so many years to go. The boy is totally awesome, in the true sense of the word.

Meanwhile, at the same time at UP, West Ham didn't wake up till the game was nearly over, and all they could manage was a draw against Watford. Thankfully, there was no stream so I didn't have to watch. wink

Re: The Football Topic

On a playing level like no other! How lucky for Barca to get him for peanuts from RP when he needed medical treatment as a youth. He may set records that will never be approached in his career. The player of a generation and maybe more than that. Enjoy the view from that armchair George.

Re: The Football Topic

Yes, good night for Chelsea and not forgetting a good one for Bayern the day before. They actually beat Basle 7-0 and on Satruday dispatched Hoffenheim 7-1. 14 goals in 2 games.

Their fans are already starting to dream of Barca in the final..............think Real might have something to say about that.........

Re: The Football Topic

- dont tell anybody guys but I was willing Chelsea to win last night and even for Torres to score; enough is enough, the guy looks so sorry for himself, - although noticed at the end he was not celebrating, he does not feel part of the team. I was even almost became sympathetic to Drogba's theatrical displays towards the end to get the clock down....well it is funny when somebody does it to an Italian team! :-)

Re: The Football Topic

CL draw - semis are winners A vs B and C vs D, so it looks like UEFA will get the Barca-Real final that they (and most of us) want to see.

APOEL v Real Madrid - A

Marseille v Bayern Munich - B

Benfica v Chelsea - C

AC Milan v Barcelona - D

Euro league draw -

AZ Alkmaar v Valencia

Schalke 04 v Athletic Bilbao

Sporting Lisbon v Metalist Kharkiv

This could well produce another all Spanish final. I will be hoping to see Bilbao win.

Atletico Madrid v Hannover 96

Re: The Football Topic

- football has rightfully been knocked a bit over here with what happened last night at WHL. Thoughts are with Frabrice Muamba and his family. - On a positive note (if you could find one out of such an awful incident) it was good to see that supporters, players, management, referee and back room staff from both sides could come together for the benefit of one man in need of help. Not sure how we (Spurs) can play again against Bolton in the FA cup unless Fabrice does make a miracle recovery.

Re: The Football Topic

I meant to berate you for admitting to supporting Chelsea the other night, Ian....and there was so much other football news to talk about too, but as you rightly point out, everything else pales into insignificance at the moment.

I was watching when it happened, we all knew that it was serious from the expressions and behavior of the players. His doctor says that the next 48 hours will be crucial and that nothing will be known about his condition until they bring him out of the artificial coma that he has been kept in since the incident. There is no way of telling till then what the extent of any brain damage might be. The doctor suggested that they could deal with any heart issues, but that no one could know how long his brain had been starved of oxygen.

It was marvelous to see how the world of football united today with wishes, hopes, and prayers for Fabrice Muamba's recovery. By all accounts, Muamba was a particularly well liked and respected young player.

Real Madrid Sunday evening - http://p.twimg.com/AoS_0zCCEAE_Cf8.jpg

I have no idea how the game will wind up being decided, and I don't suppose either team will care very much. Great credit to Howard Webb and all at Spurs for their quick reactions, which hopefully will have saved Muamba's life.

Great (first) news!!!!

"Fabrice Muamba can recognise family and breathe independently, his hospital and his club Bolton confirm in a joint statement. "

Re: The Football Topic

very poor weekend of football for me, not just Spurs v Chelsea which was as dull as ditch water but my kids team (Under 13...)

You do have to wonder about some parents...well I do! So this Saturday was a must win for us for our league position to stop us being relegated.  - last time we played this team in the league they beat us 5-4 but it was a great game, a real battle so the kids were all prepared with an extra training session this week, - we always meet up 30 minutes before kick off to get the kids warmed up and prepared...10 minutes before kick off and 2 players missing, we only have 10 players and one that is missing is our goalkeeper...He wanders over closely followed by the other one (striker) who looks half asleep..and announces that he (keeper) only got to bed at 4.30am and was back up at 6.30am playing computer games all night at a friends house on a "sleep-over", the word sleep is so inaccurate it should be banned!! The other one had been out at his sisters birthday meal but proudly announced that he got to bed at 12.30am!! His dad then gave me a hard time at the end of the match for not playing him for the full game telling me that he would only play in our friendly tomorrow night if I could guarantee that he would play the full match...I have 17 boys with 4 potential new players that I am trying to observe and I am getting demands from a kids parent who only will be play as striker and cant hit a barn door at 3 paces, - he has missed open goals this season that close!!

If you think premiership managers have problems with players you should try under 13's!!! We lost the game 8-2, - 6 goals lost to exactly the same long ball over the top of our defence to a keeper who would not or could not move off of his line against a fast centre forward who got their first! Unbelievable!!

Just thought I would share that with you guys so as to help me get it off my chest!!

I've seen the same. Not much to be done as parental supervision is either lacking, or parental oblivion sees each child as a future starter in the world cup. Set it straight at the outset of the season to the parents. That way there are no preconcieved notions of glory and maybe some concern for the team on pre game eves.

Re: The Football Topic

Where have we seen that sort of thing before though?

Match with enormous implications, players out partying 'til all hours. They do say, start 'em young, so maybe that is where it comes from.

You have my sympathy though dealing with the parents.

Re: The Football Topic

I see both Bradford and Crawley are to be heavily censured following the unseemly brawl at the end of their match in the week.

I hope they really go after the players involved, of which there were many.

I don't know the background to it, nor is that really relevant. For the Bradford keeper to run 70 yards to launch a physical attack on another player is totally unacceptable. It proved the spark that took the whole melee to another level.

In my book he should receive a seasons unpaid ban with his future conduct permanently observed. The other players found to have kicked and punched should also receive lengthy unpaid bans.

The FA and League need to discuss with the PFA the appropriate penalties for players. Football isn't ice hockey where on field fighting is almost part of the spectacle. It is a mass market sport with the power to influence in a positive way. Players and club officials need accept their role in this.

It was also disgraceful to see last night the A. Madrid coach baying to the referee from the sidelines that a Hannover player should be cautioned or sent off . His pumped up action only served to incite his players more. As a result 3 of them received yellow cards and will miss the return fixture.

Time for the sport to get draconian and regain control.
