Re: The Football Topic

Sadly Mike, we'll have to just differ on Harry. Do be aware that you are one of a very small minority among thinking Hammers. Of all the people I know personally, and all the views I read on various forums and blogs, there are maybe two out of 100+ who 'support' Harry. No more ranting from me, you all know my opinion.

Of course, Harry will take the England job that 'public opinion', formed by the gutter press and Sky, now demands should be his. He has done a decent job at Spurs, even if he gets the credit for the tactical nous of his assistants, because Harry has none himself. wink

I totally agree that it's shocking and shameful for the FA to be throwing millions at paying off and buying off manager's contracts, when the money could be put to so much better use. Everyone knows that they've said they want an English manager next and, as incredible as it may seem, there really is no other credible English manager in the race. It's a foregone conclusion.

In view of Spur's current position, and in view of the players at the club, some 'big name' foreign manager may well be interested when Harry leaves.

Gotta say George, you did make me cackle with that one................

I mean, I'll say it before anyone else does................the 'thinking Hammers' are a very small group already, so to be in the minority in that group really is small.

But quite good for me in a way, as I'm no good at remembering names. It's why my bank account password is the formed from the name of our cat with my birthday - 'Bung58'

Perhaps I didn't make myself as clear as I could have done, but I think you got the point. I can't claim to know what the 'average man at the Green St. turnstile' thinks about H, but I do know how a number of older, literate Hammers on the web feel. That's all. wink

Do you happen to remember that Alas Smith and Jones sketch with the two London coppers about 'a larf'?

First copper, rocking back and forth on his heels - "It's a larf, innit?"

Second copper, also rocking slowly - "Wot is?"

First copper - "That noise you make at the back of your froat when somfinks funny..."

Sorry, I'll get me coat...............

Re: The Football Topic

Anybody who loves the game needs to go and watch last night's Barca-Valencia highlights. This was their third meeting in the last three weeks. The first two (Spanish cup quarter finals) finished 1-1 and 2-0 to Barca with Messi 'out of form'.

Last night he was back on form and scored four in Barca's 5-1 win. I only found a clip with Russian commentary last night, will post a link once I find one in English.

Re: The Football Topic

Hey Mikey, here are short highlights of our third consecutive 10 man 'result' - seven of nine (yes, I know wink ) points with 10 men must be some kind of record, just like the three reds are probably a negative record. The table looks very pretty, though! cool

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pk7DISIk … =youtu.be+

In other recent footy highlights, Ajax 'only' lost 2-0 to ManU, though it's likely to be worse than that in the return tomorrow, Barca rediscovered their form of last year and murdered #3 Valencia 5-1, with Messi scoring four, and then last night the west London chavs got beat 3-1 by Napoli, to the great delight of every neutral watching!

So there was something to the Tevez rumors that I reported -

West Ham failed with loan bids for strikers Fernando Torres and Carlos Tevez in January, co-chairman David Gold has told BBC Sport.

The Hammers asked to take 27-year-old Torres from Chelsea for one to two months but their approach was rejected.

Manchester City were approached three times about bringing Tevez, 28, back to Upton Park, said Gold.

"We had two irons in the fire. If we'd pulled one off it would have been exciting but it wasn't to be," he said.

Re: The Football Topic

I have to say I, and all Hammers should be fans with the recent results especially last nights.

I had been concerned at often the lack of goals coming from open play, depsite that continuing to win whilst playing somewhat indifferently is the kind of form that breeds confidence. The Ipswich defeat was a timely wake up call and just what the team needed, whilst the competition also failed to capitalise.

People keep mentioning Cardiff as the main threat but Ipswich did them too yesterday. Birmingham look on a run but at the moment we have the points and the extra game. COYI

As for Wolves, whats going on there. Curbishley shouls have been the shoo-in as he is just the right bloke for this situation. But the chairman clearly said the wrong things to Curbs. Don't forget he got his fingers burnt dealing with over ambitious Icelanders so the 'Didn't share the same vision' comment speaks volumes.

Now Wolves have come back to him again. Sadly, Curbs should steer well clear now. The 'vision' Wolves have isn't clear enough and the chairman wants to be too involved in playing matters perhaps. That won't work. They'll have to go with Bruce I guess.......

I'm not sorry Tevez didn't come. I wouldn't want the drama. Right now it is a diversion we don't need there. Mancini should take him back, play him and then flog him. There's no loss of face. It's business after all.

Re: The Football Topic

Wonderful news yesterday that Rob Green's red card was rescinded and that he's available to play this weekend!

I mention this not as a dig at our ManU fan, but something remarkable took place at OT last night - by that I don't mean the result of Ajax 1.5 edging out ManU 2, but the fact that around 4k Ajax fans totally owned OT for the entire game, outsinging the other 63k local fans. I actually enjoyed the away fans more than the game, though personally I could have done with less singing about Suarez. wink

They actually made more noise, more consistently, than we hear at many home games! An awesome achievement by the travelling fans! cool

Did you really say "local fans" George?
Bwahahahahah!

(Was this just a ploy to get me out of my winter hibernation and back on the forum?)

Well after much frantic running of hares by the press over the last 10 days I see we finally got our man today to replace McCarthy - his number 2 roll  Probably stands as good a chance as any when it comes to keeping us up - at least he knows the players.

I wish him luck and he will have my backing to the end of the season. It was definitely time for change - well overdue in fact, and now we are hearing that the Chief Exec persuaded the owner to give him more time on at least two previous occasions. I hear so many people saying how they thnk MM is a "top bloke" and shouldn't have gone. Funnily enough, they all seem to support other teams. Top bloke he may be, but he hasn't a clue about Premier League football and sets his teams up the way he played back in the eighties. Things have moved on, and thankfully so has he now.
You'd think being an ex-international defender he would have been able to organise a team to keep more than two clean sheets so far this season - and they were back in August.
I'll thank him for getting us back in the top flight, but his previous record with Sunderland was abysmal, and he seems not to have learned anything - he's just spent far more money with us, and still couldn't cut it. Can you believe we are the 6th highest net spenders in the Premier League over the last 3 seasons? Can't even buy a win!

Rant over........... and thanks for the laugh George!

I avoided mentioning anything else about their fans so that I wouldn't be accused of offending our local ManU fan. roll I've seen several quotes from ManU forums today expressing extreme embarrassment about what went on there last night. Let's leave it at that. wink

But, I'm glad to have rattled you out of hibernation. What was the hitch with Curbs in the end? Something about different vision, which usually means the chairman won't spend any cash. But that couldn't have been it right now, so what was it?

Nobody knows George, but the press and TV have done us no favours with all the invented stories with no quotes or substance to back them up. "Sky Sports understands " etc.....

Curbs inadvertedly installed hmself as the bookies favourite as he was the "on duty" pundit on Sky when McCarthy's sacking broke, and the presenter put the question to him - pure coinkydink. I'm assuming he came in with a list of demands as he'd been messed about badly by his two previous employers. Neither the club or Curbs have confirmed whether an offer was made, let alone turned down, and Wolves under the current ownership have a history of doing deals in a confidential manner and not releasing information until there is something to say. That has caused the media to go crazy with speculation.

These things definitely happened:
Curbs, Bruce, and Warnock were interviewed. Warnock wanted an aswer in 24 hours and was told no way - he wanted the Leeds job of course.
Brighton wanted a significant payoff if we approached and appointed Poyet (rumoured to be £2m). We said thanks, but no thanks - Poyet not spoken to.
Walter Smith was contacted (not interviewed), but was not interested in coming back into management at this time for personal reasons.
Anything else is media speculation, but that speculation has not put the club in a good light.

We are where we are - but win lose or draw today, It's a better place without McCarthy.

Re: The Football Topic

Great result for the Wolves. 2 down and managed to salvage something. A point away from home is to be prized

Key for them is to ebsure home form is absolutely top. Points drop there will condemn you as it did for us. The bottom 5 seem to be adrift a bit but 3 points at home will do it for you.

It is a brave decision to go with Connor, although they seemed to be out of options anyway. I hope it pays off.

A stunning achievement by one of the few, true legends of our time. I don't think there's any real fan of the game who doesn't have the deepest respect for Giggsy!

I have had the most stunning afternoon's football entertainment! cool

First off, Ajax won away 4-1, switched straight over to the North London derby, where the entire world thought that the Gooners were dead and buried at 0-2, only to run out 5-2 winners (sorry, Ian). Straight over to AZ-Heerenveen, which finished 3-3, making 18 goals in three games. lol

Such a shame that Cardiff lost on pens after L'pool missed their first two. Finally, congrats on your comeback yesterday Ian, that was a big point to take from 0-2 down. You know that I wish you well and hope your lads stay up!

Re: The Football Topic

No moans from me,  - Gooners deserved their win, - Harry got it wrong I am afraid, needed Lenon on the right and Bale on the left, - Van de Vart for me is not  a player for a gritty derby game. - Half wonder if all of this England talk has taken his eye off the ball, - but maybe that is just an excuse because from what I saw Arsenal wanted it more and were first to every free ball... - And I have thought for a while that Spurs are vulnerable at the back if they come up against a team who play positively and are prepared to take them on. - The most disappointing thing is the ban for Parker. sad

Re: The Football Topic

I'm not getting my hopes up too much after yesterday's away draw, as we are still left with a legacy of McCarthy's players. People have been saying the players let him down but with the exception of our keeper (who is probably our player of the seson already, having made more saves than any other in the PL) all were brought to the club by McCarthy. I know where we were headed under McCarty though so it really can't get any worse.

On a positive note, we were by all accounts set up much better yesterday, and rather than hoofing the ball into the opposition half and hoping somebody can get on the end of it, the players were passing and working the ball upfield as it should be. And Connor did what McCarthy wouldn't and dropped his "big buy" captain who has grossly underpeformed on an alarmingly consistant level since he came to the club last summer. It's a mini league of 5 now for us - just need to finish in the top 2.

Feel sorry for Cardiff after today's game - they didn't deserve to lose that. As usual the officials showed too much respect to the "big" teams and their "big" name players. Why was Carragher not carded for hanging on to the ball when that foul was given against him? Reina runs from his goal to the halfway line to get involved with a Cardiff player. And how much longer is Gerrard allowed to spout foul and abusive language at officials when they give decisions against him? I suppose they'll make him Captain of his country too................ roll
