Topic: Led Zep to honor Ahmet Ertegun

"Rock legends LED ZEPPELIN will reportedly reunite for a one-off memorial concert in honor of their late record boss, Ahmet Ertegun, before embarking on a world tour.

ZEPPELIN has only performed a handful of concerts, including Live Aid in 1985, since its split in 1980 following the death of drummer John Bonham.

But, if the reports are to be believed, singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones will re-group alongside Bonham's son Jason for a special concert in memory of Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun in London.

A source says, "Page, Plant and Jones spoke and agreed to do the memorial concert. They are waiting for a definite date."

Anyone else hear this?

Possibly Cream and Rolling Stones also to play...

Re: Led Zep to honor Ahmet Ertegun

Hi Angela, I probably saw it the same place you did, on Eric Clapton's forum.  There has been rumors like this before but if does happen, it would be one not to miss...  Jason would add a lot of credibility to this actually happening.

Re: Led Zep to honor Ahmet Ertegun

This would be awesome if it happens.  I'm still really digging "How the West Was Won."  Neither it nor Joe's cd's want to come out of the changer.  I may have to get a bigger one or just use my ipod in my car, lol.

Re: Led Zep to honor Ahmet Ertegun

bands really shouldn't let the death of a member get in the way of great music.  Imagine if McCartney, Harrison and Starr had made more music after Lennon's death.  I can't wait to hear this new Zep concert for Ahmet.

Re: Led Zep to honor Ahmet Ertegun

Well, personally I'm glad they didn't, it's a lot better than Lynyrd Skynyrd picking at the dead corpse of Ronnie Van Zant. There's a way to do it that's not disrespectful. The Allman Brothers come to mind.

Ya I was at the Who's final farewell show at Toronto Mapleleaf Garden in 83 ?  Twenty Four years later and they're still touring , I wouldn't give up hard earned coin to see them geezers . Can't explain but thats a group that I feel should retire ....JBrules

Re: Led Zep to honor Ahmet Ertegun

Now that's where I'll disagree. Pete and Roger actually still rock. Them and McCartney and Clapton are three from the 60s that have aged extremely well. Just check this video from Live 8 about two years ago. Roger Daltrey can still sing extremely well. Plus, I loved him on his guest appearance on Never Make A Move Too Soon on BB King's 80.

Re: Led Zep to honor Ahmet Ertegun

I 200% disagree about THE WHO...I've seen them live multiple times going back to the early 70's...A recent sold out concert in Columbus, OH was one of the best I've ever seen...Tommy, Quadrophenia and now Endless Wire...I agree that Pete and Roger still put on a great show...They work much harder than many, many younger bands that I have seen that make it look like they're just going thru the motions...Pete, Roger, Zak Starkley, Simon Townsend, windmills, jumps, swinging microphone...Come on...I hope they hang on forever...

Lynyrd Skynard was nothing but respectful.

Remember the whole band was involved in the crash.  They had to rehabilitate from their wounds and put their lives back together.  It was ten years before the band decided to regroup with Ronnie's brother Johnny Van Zant.  They also had Allen Collins come out.  It was very moving.  Lynyrd Skynyrd is family and Ronnie was there brother.  They grew up together.  There is a closeness that is more than a band.  Lynyrd Skynyrd does their upmost to respect the memories of Ronnie, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines and there road manager Dean Kilpatrick.

I went to there first tour after they decided the time was right to play again.  For the last song they did Freebird and Johnny put his hat on the microphone as a tribute to his brother with the song being played as an instrumental.

P.S.  The Who played the next day after John's passing.   If that's o.k., than how was Lynyrd Skynyrd disrepectful?

Re: Led Zep to honor Ahmet Ertegun

Angela,

Thanks for the information.  That should be a very special concert.  The last time I saw Led Zepplin perform was when they were inducted into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame.  Ahmet Ertegen did alot for Atlantic Records and you'll see artists from different music genres wanting to pay tribute to him.

Re: Led Zep to honor Ahmet Ertegun

I'm sorry, that's just what I think. After seeing a documentary on the feud between them and Artimus Pyle on VH1, I'm just not that impressed with them. Just my thoughts.

But what did they specifically do to say they were disrespectful but the Who is respectful?
I'm just asking why one is o.k. for you but the other is not?

The way they treated Artimus Pyle, for one. But I'm not going to get into this. This is what I'm going to believe. Period. End of discussion.

Re: Led Zep to honor Ahmet Ertegun

Well, I was asking about Ronnie Van Zant since that is who you made the comment about.

I'm sorry about the feud they had with Artimus.

As a fan of Skynyrd I know what I saw on the Reunion tour was done with the upmost respect.

Re: Led Zep to honor Ahmet Ertegun

Robert Plant has shot down reports that LED ZEPPELIN will reunite for a one-off memorial concert in honor of their late record company boss.

A report was published earlier in the week suggesting that Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones will re-group alongside John Bonham's son Jason for a special concert in memory of Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun in London.

A source was quoted as saying, "Page, Plant and Jones spoke and agreed to do the memorial concert. They are waiting for a definite date.

"And no one can quite believe it, but during discussions about the concert they all gave the green light to a tour if it all does well and they don't all fall out.

"It has been hoped for and denied for years. But this is the closest they have ever come to a reunion tour. The feeling is that this is going to happen next year."

Speaking at a press conference for the upcoming Rockwave festival — which is scheduled to be held June 29, June 1 and June 3 in Athens, Greece — Plant insisted that he hadn't heard anything about the rumored ZEPPELIN reunion and jokingly added, "If there was one, then there wouldn't be enough doctors to support it!"

Re: Led Zep to honor Ahmet Ertegun

That's too bad that Page reportedly shot the reunion down.  I think Jason would have done a great job on drums.  But, I still have some great memories of seeing them back in early 1970 at Macon, Ga.  The concert was over three hours long!  Amazing, amazing show....

Re: Led Zep to honor Ahmet Ertegun

I'm not surprised. I've heard this rumor before, and then it was subsequently shot down. I'm gonna bet the house they never get back together. Plant has repeatedly said he no longer wants to tread back over old ground.

Hi Angela,

I can flat out tell you, if that reunion ever happens. I will do everything possible to get tickets, especially if Cream and the Stones were there. I mentioned it to the boss, she said keep an eye open, we have always wanted to cross the pond. Hey maybe Michael could hang out with us, that would be cool!

Got a quick story for you. I brought up your post to a friend at work yesterday. He was stationed in Germany while in the service. He said he went to see Zeppelin in Nuremburg in '79', they were the only group scheduled to play on the show. He goes to get a beer, all of a sudden he hears "black dog" being played, he said his thoughts were*** who's playing that, it sounds terrible, it cant be them, must be some opening band*** Then the music stops after a very short time, he hears all this ruckus, hurrys out to see what the skinny is. Some one had thrown a smoke bomb on stage, and Bonham is passed out cold lying on the stage. People are running to his aid, Robert Plant says "we'll be right back". They never came back on stage, show was over after 30 seconds. I wonder if anyone on the forum was there that night, he would like to know what happened. My own Zep story is both sad and mad. I saw them in the Bay Area around '77', but dont remember any of the show, I partied way too much back then, what a dummy! Fortunately I caught Plant in the bay area 3 years ago, it eased some of my pain (LOL)
