usually attributed to one Tommy Tedesco, session guitarist? He was joking they think, pointing out that his role in most music was to remain in the background and not be heard all that much. He added, or so it is reported, "If you went above the 5th fret on a particular song, then you might not be asked back for another session." lol pretty funny to me.

Tommy was a legend! Scores of scores and themes and sessions.  He recorded more than Jimi Hendrix and is widely regarded as the most recorded guitarist in history!  He was a regular "lecturer" at the inception of the now famous, then not so much so, GIT, Guitar Institute of Technology in Hollywood, which is now known as the Musician's Institute.  If you listen to Bread's Guitar Man, the line "he's just got to find another place to play", personified (heck the song might even BE, and I think it is, about Tommy!!!) Tommy's love of playing, which he did anywhere and everywhere in Los Angeles, including a regular weekly stint at a LA club, was evident in that he could play anything on anything.  Many found inspiration from him and he taught at every opportunity whether in a paid course or freely at an unplanned opportunity.
He is gone but he's no forgotten.

This quote is 'borrowed' from legendary Liverpool FC manager, Bill Shankly, who used the word 'football' instead of 'college football in the south'.l
