Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

Hi all.  I thought this was an excellent album, one of my favorites of the year.  I'm not a KWS die hard fan, but I really enjoyed this album.  Quality songwriting and some real gems.  My personal favorite is 'Anywhere the Wind Blows' which I can't seem to hear enough of.  Very, veryh good.  Not a bad song on the album

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

Made the trip down to London on Monday to take in Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s first UK date in 12 years, and his only UK date on the current European tour – what a fantastic gig!

Never having seen KWS before, and only recently having been drawn to his music through the superb “Live in Chicago” album, I was unsure what to expect, but ended up witnessing what for me was the gig of the year so far, and featured plenty of material from his new release “How I Go”.

The set started in powerful fashion with the Stones infused album opener “Never Looking Back”, and continued without a pause into the even rockier “Butterfly” with Kenny and lead singer Noah Hunt working the crowd into a frenzy. A quick slip back to earlier material followed with “Nevermind”, and then it was back to the new songs with “Come on Over” and Kenny’s great take on the Beatles “Yer Blues”.

Having showcased some of the newer songs, Kenny set about addressing his long absence from this part of the world with some of his older and better known songs, starting with a superb rendition of “Deja Voodoo”, slipping seamlessly into “Come On” which really did get those good times rollin’. “Shame, Shame, Shame”, saw Kenny paying (and playing) tributes to his blues heroes and influences.  “King’s Highway” and “True Lies” were great crowd pleasers, as was the last track from the new album to feature, “Backwater Blues”. Kenny’s superb signature instrumental “While We Cry” had the audience enthralled, with some beautiful tones and sweet playing, before the main set drew to a close with a great cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Oh Well”.

Encore time, and Noah strapped on the acoustic and encouraged the audience to sing along to “Blue on Black”, before a rousing version of “King Bee” picked up the pace again. The show closed with a stunning 22 minute cover of “Voodoo Chile” with “Slight Return” that featured the sweetest Fender Strat tones I’ve ever heard live.

A word for the band. While Kenny and Noah took most of the accolades, I couldn’t fail to be impressed by the rest of the guys. Riley Osbourn added much to the overall sound on keys, and Tony Franklin was outstanding on the Fender fretless bass. Drummer wasn’t bad either – the rock solid but understated style of the legend that is Chris Layton, who I was honoured to meet afterwards.

Fantastic gig, and one that will live long in my memory.

Here’s a few pics taken on my compact.

Great review Ian, turning very green here..... Did you bump into Britbabe by any chance?

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

Great review Ian. It sounds like you got what we got out here, with an even longer version of Voodoo Child/Slight Return. Kenny can sure do a good Jimi. Totally rocking and enjoyable from front to back. The audience sing along to Blue on Black here was a highpoint lovefest. Just a totally good time. Kenny may carry some baggage and not be the most fan friendly guy around, but when he steps on stage with his band, he delivers.

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

Did Kenny expand on why they were only across for one gig? Any indication they would be back next year? Would love to see him again.

Kenny was on Simon Mayo's Radio2 show while we were in the queue outside the venue, and I was told he said they plan to come back next year and play more gigs around the UK.

I believe they also recorded some tracks to be played on a future Paul Jones show, which usually includes an interview, so keep an eye out for that one Kenny.

In the meantime these vids (from Pete and Maggie) might keep your appetite whetted:

Look, Roy has said that he's not prepared to take this particular discussion any further here, so please accept that and take it off forum. I don't know any details about this whatsoever, but I  do know that people write all sorts of stuff on the internet without the intention that every word should be taken literally, i.e. about kicking ***s.

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

I haven't given KWS much thought the past several years but today I learned that he's playing a gig at The Brat Stop in Kenosha, WI next month. I'm sure some of you from the area are familiar with the venue. Saw him a long time ago at Summerfest but the song selection was a little too bluesy for me at the time. Can anybody say if he's now more on the rock side of blues/rock or the blues side? I'm debating whether or not to attend since it's right in my back yard.

Hi Barbie,

Icon put a great review of the show he just saw with KWS at the top of this thread.  It is post number 101.
Reading that review may help you decide if you would like to go, or hopefully someone else can give you some more thoughts smile

You'll have a good time BarbieD. We saw him out here in California at the beginning of the tour. Some Blues, some Rock, some excellent entertainment.

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

OK I deleted more individual posts than I ever have. Just scrubbing a lot of discussion that really wasn't about Kenny's new album. Sorry if any of you suffered collateral damage. I did so since most of the thread did pertain to the album. It would of been easier to delete the whole thread but didn't want you guys to totally have to start over on it.

Let's move on I haven't listened to the album yet been too busy around here so could you all help me and George out and BEE HAVE as Austin Powers might say so I can listen to it myself. I saw Kenny in 2001 and thought he was great. Hope the new album is as good as the first 3.
