APRIL
April  1st to 30th - Germany/Holland Tour

(I'll ask round for more detail for Germany/Holland dates.)

Don't know how you'd pigeon-hole Jay; blues, jazz, soul, gospel, even some 80's AOR; but somehow he makes it work on this album. You can almost sense a story running through it (no, not a concept album). Young guy, getting ready for a Saturday night out on the town, meets someone who knocks his socks off, relationship develops and grows before things slowly change and it falls apart leaving him to question himself. We've all been there, only the genders have been changed to protect the uninvolved.

Musically, 10 really good tracks, 6 really good and would love to hear "live", but 3, "You've Changed","Don't Wait Too Long" and "Lovin' Man" are especially strong.

He's kept the same production team as previous "Sorted" album, and backing musicians, but Jay features guitar, bass, piano, organ, drums, percussion, trumpet, trombone, sax as well as horn and string arrangements.  I'll give this an 8/10

Re: Jay Tamkin Band Autumn/Winter Alibi tour.

Even though it has a solid reputation for "live" music, the New Roscoe; Leeds, seems to have been all but overlooked by the modern blues crew, so it was a bit of a surprise to see that Jay & the band down for here.

This as the first chance I've had to catch Jay, having just missed him in Darlington last time round. Since then, Jay has adapted the line up from bass player to keyboards/bass so obviously he's going to draw comparisons with Matt Schofield. If saying your girlfriend is like Cameron Diaz, then is this a bad thing? I can't compare the sound of the two line-ups as I've only heard the first via YouTube's sometimes dubious quality. Jay's guitar though has a rich, deep voice, in some way reminiscent of Ian Parker and played well over and through the keys. However, while Jay has his list of influences, he has a sound completely his own; mixing rock, blues, jazz and gospel and when he lets it rip - which he did several times - sounds like a horny, lovestruck wolf.

The set kicked off with a "Highway Star" sounding build up before they kicked off into a strong set of all Tamkin originals taken from both albums. Mixing it with full on rockers and smooth blues, Jay went full out and was firing on all six. "You've Got The Heart" pulled out one of the best lap-jacks I've heard since Jeff Healey. A strong 90 minute set came to a close with what for my money is one of the strongest cuts from Alibi - "You've Changed"; epic. On to the encore and Jay showed his great versatility by taking over duties on keyboard while Rik went to the bar to buy him a post-gig pint.

On this kind of showing, it was disappointing to see such a low turn-out as there was - you'd almost think someone had died (O-Oh I'll go to Hell for that one...), but either Thursdays' aren't a "live" night for Leeds, or they're not yet ready for the new wave blues. Shame, because this lad and his band are as hot as any of their peers, and worth catching.

Re: Jay Tamkin Band Autumn/Winter Alibi tour.

Yes it was a real shame a great band at a great venue but no audience ,the trouble is there are quite a few pubs not far away who have half decent bands on for free.
Really enjoyed jay's set it was worth the 4 hours sleep, hangover and feeling like s*** at work all day.

Hi Simon,
Great to meet you down there. No hangover here, but I too  only had the 4 hours sleep, but it was worth it. First time at the Roscoe, haven't done a gig in Leeds for ages.... Having a look at what's on, you probably know of them already, but if you like Mick Taylor era 'Stones, check out Deadstring Brothers next week-end.

Cheers

Re: Jay Tamkin Band Autumn/Winter Alibi tour.

Mike and anyone who's thinking of seeing Jay at the New Crawdaddy Blues Club in March, the date is actually 22nd March per Jay's Gig Guide.

This different date doesn't help me much as on either of the dates I'm seeing Joe the next day a long way from Billericay. I suppose Billericay to Brighton is shorter than Billericay to Bournemouth, so not quite so bad. big_smile

I've only seen jay once and that was with Maggie at the now defunct Charlotte Street Blues in London's West End, but he made a big impression on both of us with his musicianship, excellent self penned songs and clear singing voice. If you are thinking of going to any of these gigs but are unsure, I can highly recomment Jay.
