Topic: JB Fuzz Face power mods...

OK, this battery thing is for the birds. I'm thinking of plugging in to the sag circuit of my PP2. Has anyone tried this with the JB Fuzz? I'm not quite sure how I want to do it, so I'm open to ideas, or what you've done...There's really no room to run a wire out of the bottom of the plate. hmm

Re: JB Fuzz Face power mods...

More to the point I'm tired of replacing batteries, so has anyone done a 9v PSU mod - will it work and not damage the JBFF?  Will affect the sound quality atall?  Answers on a postcard please.  smile

Re: JB Fuzz Face power mods...

I have a Sun Face FF (Analogman). I tried it with PP SAG. It's just not the same. Fuzz Face circuits need the crappiest, cheapest carbon 9V battery you can find. I buy mine 2 for $1.

Re: JB Fuzz Face power mods...

Personally I've never had much luck with fuzz pedals hooked up to a power supply.....too noisy for my taste.

Re: JB Fuzz Face power mods...

I guess it's not really a good idea...Check out the section on power supply problems.

Ah but then again...I found out about this little device which seems to answer all the questions.

Mine's on order already - about £30 with postage.  Cool eh?  big_smile

Re: JB Fuzz Face power mods...

I don't see why the 9v battery adapter cable supplied with your PP2 wouldn't work?

I'd try it first, and if it works you'll have to notch out the metal on the pedal housing with a dremmel or something in order for the cable to pass through when the pedal is screwed together.

Changing batteries does suck unless you have a roadie to do it for you..

I drilled a hole in an old A/B box that did not have a 9v outlet, only ran on a battery.  So I drilled a hole in the side, slid the cable through, plugged it into where the battery goes and it works fine.

If you read the article though it explains better than I could about some undesirable issues connecting directly to a PSU 9v supply.  The virtual battery appears to get around those issues.  Having said that, I just sent the link over to my tech-head friend who does gear repairs for me and he was of the opinion that it was a waste of money.  What does he know?!?!  tongue

Re: JB Fuzz Face power mods...

Wonder if Joe runs his FF on batteries or manages to power it through his Voodoo power pack?

If batteries, I wonder how often his tech has to change out?

Re: JB Fuzz Face power mods...

The analog man article does state that using a single power cable to the PP2 would be safe, but also says the power supply could add noise, and would affect the tone, Stating that a germanium fuzz will get the best sound using a non-alkaline battery (as Oasis and Wharris have experienced).
It is kind of a bummer stepping on it, and not getting the expected fuzz because the battery drained...

Re: JB Fuzz Face power mods...

Its perfectly fine to power it with the pedal power 2.  I doubt too many people would even hear much of a difference vs a battery, Especially with a band.

Re: JB Fuzz Face power mods...

Well I think another thing that needs to be addressed is the lack of room in the bottom plate to run a lead.  In the past i actually drilled a hole on the sides of fuzzes, and went to radio shack and picked a battery to standard pedal plug converter and ran several tonebenders and fuzz faces out of my BBE supacharger which has isolated outputs. never had a noise problem.  If you don't want to drill the original pedal, consider picking up any fuzz face, maybe a broken one, for cheap and use the bottom plate of that for your JB, then drill away.

Great suggestion, thanks. I'm also thinking of trying a round file to the edge to create a notch...

That's a pretty good idea.

Re: JB Fuzz Face power mods...

Guys - a quick update on the Virtual Battery for the fuzzface.  I installed it yesterday and can you believe it - well it works!  I can hear no discernable difference in the quality of the JBFF output and it seems to have good noise suppression.  Heartily recommend it.

I like the idea of getting a replacement bottom plate to drill a lead hole, however I did a temporary fix by folding a 6mm length tube of heat shrink over the battery lead and just screwed the plate down to hold it in place.

Great news! The replacement plate is on the way. I'll report back how it sounds in the Pedal Power 2 sag.
