Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Monza passed without comment here and so far, Singapore as well. I guess with the WC outcome a foregone conclusion (Vettel wins), so interest wanes. Not for the hardy fan (or F1 nerd) if you will. There is always so much going on.

OK Seb hasn't won it yet but he has done a fine job this year. Boring? Well if you want to look at it that way. Look at it another and you will see he has set the most poles and won the most races, without the fastest car - certainly not at all the tracks. But he, and his team have simply done the best job. Maximised the potential of it every time out - mostly - and then he gives it the remaining percentage of brilliant driving and there is your champion 2011.

At Monza they trimmed his car back by over 20kph on the straights against the Mercedes (which were fastest) and he still still won it and set the pole time. Red Bull bogey track - forget that.

Singapore, different circuit and dynamics - same story. He gets it on the pole, runs away at first then manages the tyre wear and hopes there ISN'T a safety car. But there is and he loses all he has gained but he just does it all again.

Button drove very well and is easier on his tyres, but even he didn't have the confidence to push early enough on his last set to cause Vettel any undue pressure. When he finally knew he could make it to the end on his last set of boots it was already too late and Vettel could manage the gap.

Hopefully with the title over and all attention being switched to the 2012 designs, we will see the other teams take more risks in the last races. It doesn't matter anymore. Gamble on the super softs with say Massa snatching pole (you never know) and get him to hold everybody up for the first 12 laps and then hopefully there is a dogfight. Vettel can overtake with the best of them, anybody who says he can't is wrong, but when he is in the pack with Alonso, Webber, Hamilton and Schumacher et al - anything can happen and hopefully it will.

My final word. Da Resta. What a great season. When Schumi eventually packs it in he will be a great prospect for Mercedes. But if I was Ferrari I wouldn't wait. Perez is good, sure, but Da Resta is better. But who wants to play second fiddle to Alonso? Wouldn't have to be forever though and Ferrari would be a good place to be.

OK my final final word for now. How I hate these cars with their skinny tyres. It really came home to me watching on Sunday just how daft they look. Skinny rear tyres and skinny rear wings, F1 roller skates. Everyone talks about with the turbos how these cars will sound in the future, but coupled with how they look, its just awful..........

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Sadly, due to the time difference out here and work conflicts, I missed the last 3 races.  sad Never boring to me to watch a superior driver in good equipment dominate. All credit to him and his team. A W.C. well earned. I'm not exactly looking forward to turbo squelch on the exhaust notes. That is a good observation on Da Resta. It is always nice to watch the young talent graduate to the senior circuit and have the promise resolve. I enjoy your insight Mike.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Yes, it is interesting speculating on the 'coming men', so to speak as at some point some of the older drivers will have to make way.

Mark Hughes (a fantastic motorsports writer who can unravel the most technical aspects of the sport and make them interesting reading for the common man) was speculating on the career of Bruno Senna.

He's done an excellent job in the last few races. Qualifying well and bringing it home in the race. He has had so little seat time his efforts should be seen as confirmation of a real latent talent. OK he has the seat at 'Renault' for now but that really won't be the place to be. Red Bull are now Renaults official engine partner so now even 'Renault - Team Lotus' are only Renaults second string. When or if, Kubica comes back he will step in and Petrov's backers will praobably keep him in the seat. So what for Senna?

Hughes reminded his readers of how close Senna was to F1 in 2009. He had a deal to drive for Honda with Button, but Honda's pull out screwed that. Ross Brawn decided it was too risky to put a new boy in the Brawn that year and Barrichello did a great job for him. But if Senna had got the nod - who knows. Wins possibly and running Jenson close in the first half of the year. Had that been the case he would probably be in the Mercedes now and it would be Rosberg trying to get a seat somewhere.

Rosberg might also be in for a move and Ferrari would suit him too, as well as McLaren. Schumi will never be what he was, but he is getting the hang of it again and runs Rosberg very close in the races, even outperforming him these last 3 events (OK he was shunted out at Monza but Schumi had already made a demon start and was well ahead). That can only harm Rosberg's career and value in the short term so a move (the right one) could be a good step, but it would have to be one of those 2 teams.

I believe that Senna has the talent, and I also believe, and with that the marketing of that name and everything that goes with it should be a great lure.

The end of next season (2012) will see a lot of contracts up. Barrichello, Trulli, Schumi(?), maybe even Webber, could all be on their way. Webber's seat would be tied up internally unless they want to have Hamilton, Alonso will have a number 2, either Perez, or some newcomer albeit unlikely.

That leaves De Resta, Nico Hulkenburg, Senna, Glock, Kobiyashi, all looking for potentially better teams.

Glock would be a good fit for Williams, whilst for me, Senna or Hulkenburg would be perfect for Ferrari in a number 2 role. De Resta also as previously said, but if Schumi goes then Mercedes will have first refusal I would expect.

Jenson will stay at McLaren unless Ferrari decide to go for broke and get someone who will always get wins and point for them now. I would expect Massa to end up back at Sauber, or Williams or maybe even Lotus.

But if Webber goes and Hamilton finds a way into Red Bull, who would McLaren pair with Button?

I have to say I would like to see those familiar Brazilian colours in a McLaren again. The line between the great and the merely good is very fine, but it is an almighty shame if those with talent don't get the chance to reach that line and cross it.

And yet I read in Autosport there are rumours that Kimi Raikkonen might be back at F1 next year in a Williams.  Mind you, a driver only has to be spotted having a cup of tea in a rival team's motorhome for the rumour making machine to go into overdrive.

I'd like to see Paul Da Resta in a better car for 2012.  He's certainly shown a lot of potential with some mature drives this year and was probably my driver of the day from the Singapore race.  Bruno Senna?  Not sure whether I would agree that he's ready just yet to move up to the 'bigger' time.  I haven't been that impressed with him so far.  I would agree that the likes of Schumi, Barichello and Trulli should consider moving asides but it's difficult as long as they've still got the fire and competitiveness and can add value to a team.

On a fashion note  big_smile  did anyone spot the new sparkly helmet worn by Sebastien Vettel for the Singapore race?  The helmet of a double world champ.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

A worthy double world champ, too, seeing as he only needs one point this weekend in Japan,a great place to be crowned,i'm sure he won't rest on his laurels afterwards, and push on to win the remaining races too. big_smile

Come on you Blades!

I read it too Lyn. Apparently he's not prepared to fund his own Rally career anymore (would be expensive given the crashes so far), and it is believed he still has enough F1 sponsor cache to bring some finance to a team.

Personally, I doubt it. Williams could do with him, but his head would soon go down. He often went to sleep in races with Ferrari and I don't see the Williams waking him up! Plus rumours are the Williams are miffed with Rubens as he won't do so much promo work for them with sponsors. Well, Kimi won't do ANY! lol

It is a shame about Williams. They have become also rans. Teams with less resources are overtaking them. There is a malaise in the management there. The right risks are not being taken. You can trace it right back to when they split with BMW. Autocratic management is to blame. Sir Frank and Head should be applauded for creating such a great team, but unfortunately I think their time is over and if Williams is to rediscover any glory they need to hand the team to someone with the personality and will to take it forward. Their current legacy is a dead hand at the tiller.

In the last years they have let the wrong drivers go, because the team couldn't or wouldn't make the necessary investment in people and tools to do the job. Webber/Heidfeld should have been perfect for them but the blame game started quite quickly. Even Head admitted afterwards it was a mistake to lose Heidfeld to BMW. Rosberg had to go, because it was clear he couldn't develop himself further there and the car was too unreliable.

Allowing Hulkenberg to go was just as mystifying. A top team wouldn't have to have taken Maldonado's money, even though he has aquitted himself well this year. Hulkenberg could have built on a good second half to 2010 and was the better prospect. Rubens would have been finished by now with him in the other car.

So to Kimi. It could be a marriage of convenience for 1 season to rebuild the reputations of both. He wouldn't come cheap and at this stage I see it as would be throwing the money in the wrong area. They need to build a great car. Simple and effective that 2 good drivers can take ahead of Renault, Force India and be close up behind the Mercs.

From a development point of view Heidfeld could still have something to offer but if it had to be someone from the current crop I would prise Timo Glock from Virgin. Good qualifier, good starter, and sensational when it rains.

Difficult times for Williams. They are making profits as a company but that isn't what it is all about. Where is that racing instinct? They need to get some top design talent in there and fast.

firstly sorry for me harping on about motorbikes..

and Tommy Hill won his first title yesterday at Brands Hatch. - This may come as a shock to you F1 fans but the BSB final round of races was made up of 3 races over 1 weekend, - 1 on Saturday and 2 yesterday Sunday. So last race of the day and 2 contenders, - Tommy Hill, local lad from just down the road in Kent, - - very tough story of nearly having to give up racing a few years back when his family ran out of money to support him, - an then his dad had the big "C" and again things were tough...And the other contender was ex MotoGP prodigy USA born John "Hopper" Hopkins, - a true racer who had done superbly all year racing on small tight dangerous circuits that he had never seen before and winning more than just races with true respect from the UK crowds.... So last race of the season and Hopper is winning by a few points, - Tommy knows that he has to beat Hopper...Last lap, - and the lead changes over and over again on a track that is fast and very dangerous.. Tommy does it 6 1000th of a second.

http://www.crash.net/british+superbikes … e_win.html

However, Hopkins showed his mettle by fighting back on the very final lap, the pair passing each other a total of five times before Hill nosed ahead as they exited the final Clack Curve corner. Sprinting to the finish line, Hill would cross the line just 0.006secs ahead of Hopkins to win the first BSB title for both himself and Shaun Muir Racing.

A sweet digression to some REAL racing! Hoppy is a local boy. Grew up riding motoX at Barona Oaks. Makes F1 look rather pedestrian. Great Clip!
Nice result for Button and deserved contract.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

ahem ... may we get back to F1?   lol

Congratulations to Sebastian Vettel on being the youngest ever double world F1 champion.  It was a bit of a foregone conclusion really as he only needed one point from the race to be unbeatable.  However, the driver of the day for me was Jenson Button.  When he joined McLaren I was worried that he would be used as a foil to Lewis but having Lewis as a team mate seems to have spurred Jenson on.   He drove a really intelligent race and unlike the Red Bull team made his tyres last despite being harried in the final part of the race by Alonso.  And he seems like a really nice guy to boot.

The rest of the season may be a little tame now that the driver's championship is won, but as far as the constructor's trophy is concerned there's still everything to play for as Red Bull haven't won it yet ....... yet.

Just goes to show that motor racing in any form - two wheels or four - is still an intrinsically dangerous sport.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Yes, very sad news indeed that Dan succumbed to his injuries.

From the clips I've seen it was a classic Indy style oval crash; multiple cars abreast insufficient room leaving no margin for error should someone lose control, which is what happened here.

With 34 cars in the field and at speeds of over 200mph its no wonder 15 cars became involved. At these speeds even these guys can't react quickly enough to avoid a major impact. The footage from Will Powers car is evidence of the difficulties involved.

Questions will have to be asked. Worst possible outcome for IndyCar as it tries to re-establish itself as a major series. Perversely, of course, this accident will serve to heighten its profile, but not in the best way. I suppose it is unsavoury to reflect that Dan Wheldon was only competing in this race as IndyCars nominated 'Race for $5 Million Prize', where if he won the race he would share the prize fund with a spectator at the race, but without a regular drive this year he wouldn't normally have been there without this publicity stunt. But then again, this accident could have occurred anywhere at anytime on the IndyCar schedule.

I saw a report that Mark Blundell was questioning the amount of cars starting at this race track which is (relatively) narrow with extreme banking - so questions will have to be asked.

Indycar have had already used a controversial rolling restart system this year where the cars are 2 abreast. This has itself caused several bad accidents and the teams and drivers have been very vocal about. Randy Bernhard the CEO of IndyCar is very keen to increase the spectacle, but they are going to have to be careful at striking the right balance.

As LynB says, the sport, on 2 or 4 wheels is inherently dangerous at some point and yesterdays accident to one of IndyCars most successful drivers underlines this.

I read ageing ex F1 driver Jean Alesi is gearing up for a debut at the Indy 500 next year. If I were him I would have to question the wisdom of doing it. He was lucky in his career and got out of it intact. He should reflect on that and pull out. The Brickyard isn't a place for 48 year olds to make their rookie debut. I was sad to see Schumi to come back to F1 for that reason. Yesterday he got lucky when Vitaly Petrov got over optimistic. When these guys walk away they should stay away.

Dan Wheldon won't get that chance now. A good man gone.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

So another season has come to an end.  Over the past 9 months millions – nay billions - of $$$$ have been spent in the pursuit of excellence (and some would say futility) by teams to prove that they are the best in both technology and reliability.  For some like Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren it’s been money well spent and kept the sponsors and spectators happy.  For others at the bottom end of the grid it’s been an expensive, frustrating and steep learning curve and in these current difficult economic times I’m sure the grid will look very different next year than it did this.

What’s next for the magnificent Red Bull team who won both the driver’s and team championship in style and with seeming ease?  Can they continue their dominance of the sport?  Towards the end of this season both Ferrari and McLaren were looking consistently stronger with, to my mind, Alonso and Button being the stand out driver in each team respectively.  But they couldn’t quite get to grips with a car which, even with gearbox problems in Brazil, is still superior.  And let’s not forget for some of the races Red Bull didn’t have DRS or KERS.  As well as Ferrari and McLaren I’d like to see a resurgence in some of the mid runners.  Williams used to be a great force in F1 and it’d be wonderful to see them come back to some sort of consistent form.  Force India: who would have thought a few years ago that they’d finish sixth in this year’s championship.  Paul di Resta is certainly a name to look out for in 2012.  Will Lotus make enough strides forward for them to match the history of its great name and heritage?  No doubt another few billion $$ will be poured into R&D for all the teams and I’m also looking forward to seeing which drivers will survive into 2012.

I hope Massa may decide to retire. He hasn’t been the same since his terrible accident and I’ve been speculating whether the injury he sustained to his eye has been a contributory factor to some of the errors he’s made and the subsequent track accidents involving him.  Just a thought.  Will Schumie hang in for another year?  Is it time for Barrichello to hang up his helmet?  Who knows, but I’ve enjoyed this season despite the predictability of it and will be looking forward to next year with great anticipation.
