Re: The Football Topic

A manager with a track record of keeping his club in the division. Thats worth having. Got his work cut out to get them out of this one though.

I'm prepared to give him a crack and forget the naysayers. His clubs played as they did given what they had. Quite rational for a start at WHam.

Whenever I saw Bolton in his era they were big and they bustled. Route 1 would be an unfair description but they would and could break fast, but could also quickly get men behind the ball.

Time will tell

Re: The Football Topic

For our friends across the pond. Tonight is the finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. US vs Mexico, a grudge match. Mexico swears to exact revenge against its hated rival to the north. In the storied Rose Bowl at 1800 Pacific time. If you have the need for a lack of sleep and can get it online, it might be a dandy. The US has looked abysmal at times in the tournament before getting it together, Mexico has cruised through lesser teams. Mexico is missing some of its best players due to doping, the US has lost some due to injury. US has now run 322 shutout minutes since a horrid loss to Panama.  Winner goes to Brazil next year for the Confederation Cup. I and my younger son will be in a British style football pub watching it while lifting a pint or three and cheering our team. Go USA!

Ok, the terminology is a little different, but i think i know what you mean.

Over here that means the team has not allowed a goal in that long.

Re: The Football Topic

Exciting game. US went up 2-0, Mexico tied before the half, then went on to win 4-2. US had their chances, but missed good shots. All credit to Mexico. A well played and fairly clean game with end to end action, Chicharito, the M.U. forward played very well. Fabulous atmosphere in the pub with fans split about 60/40 for the US. Good beer, (Stella, Guinness, Newcastle and more on draft) good English style pub food and good friendly banter. A Mexican TV station did a live spot in the pub at the end of the game with cheering Mexico fans. I couldn't ask for better times in a close match.  We had a blast!

Re: The Football Topic

Had my first look at our new National Team Coach, Jurgen Klinsmann. He still looks fit enough to play! Good effort vs. Mexico with a 1-1 draw that should have been at least 2-1 US but for horrid officiating. He played some new young men who looked good. An entertaining game.  smile

Re: The Football Topic

I hope it works out for 'Klinsi'. As Brack has said, this should be his dream job, given his adoption of the US as his home.

His previous posts in Europe have always been undermined by his decision to be based in the US.

People are still undecided here by his managerial qualities. A lot of the success he claims as the German coach is now attributed to his successor Loewe. Nontheless, he was an inspirational figure at the time and if his version of events is to be believed then it was he and Loewe who mapped out a plan to completely revitalise German national football by getting the general public to closely identify with the team - which they still do to this day.

If he could pull off that trick in the US then the sky would be the limit. I hope so. I ike Klinsmann and he remains one the most exciting players I have ever seen live. As a West Ham fan I even went to a Spurs home game just to watch him play. He didn't disappoint. He was a thoroughbred as a player.

I wish him every success.

good to see the ex Spurs boy managing you guys over the pond! Has he still got his old VW beetle? - Was a great source of amusement over here that when he was at WHL as a player all of the other players with their blinged up pimp mobills and Jurgan was there in his 30 year old rusty VW!

Re: The Football Topic

We have great hopes for his success. I've always held him in high regard since his days on the GNT, one of the greatest players of his generation IMO. He seemed very happy to be on the sidelines and his changes in the 2nd half energized the team after a lackluster first. The call by the official was terrible, a clean breakaway just outside the box center and the beaten Mexican defender who was last man pulled the attacking forward down from behind by the shirt and arm before he could shoot. hmm  Yellow!!?????

Jurgen, the "Kaiser" new USA Coach!  I didn't know that!  He's been wanting that job for a long time!

We only have one "Kaiser" and "Lichtgestalt" here in Germany and that's Franz Beckenbauer.
Juergen is only "Klinsi".

Re: The Football Topic

Fans in Holland are generally not happy with the draw, and indeed, there are easier groups than the one Ajax was drawn in. I have no illusions at all, I fully expect Ajax to finish third. They might, through the old 'anything-is-possible-in-football' law somehow manage to come second, but that's not something I expect, so I won't be disappointed.

Decent draw for Barca too, nice to play AC instead of Inter.

(I probably won't be mentioning West Ham this season.)  sad

Always a hero...to us!  wink We'll have to wait and see, he claims that he didn't refuse to play, Mancini says he did.

They want rid, he wants out, the only way that can happen before January is if he goes out on loan to a lower division!  big_smile

Of course, they'd have to pay his reputed 250k p.w. wages since we couldn't possibly afford them, but stranger things have happened.

Re: The Football Topic

I thought that he was a bit temperamental at Upton Park?..And Old Trafford..and Brasil...

One of the best players in the World when he wants to be, - would often use him as an example to the kids I coach as he was like a terrier competing for the ball, - making stuff happen out of nothing. I will be using him as a different type of example from here on!

I think Man City will challenge his pay legally and make it as difficult for him as they can, - can't see him staying in English football... Why was he not picked up by a Spanish side this summer? -  MC had no problem with him going elsewhere in the summer, (and they made other arrangements to cover his move) but he and his agent could not do a deal because (I believe)  of his reputation....Why was he even looking at Corithians/Brasil when it was obvious that they could not pay his wages? -Get the feeling that wherever he goes it will be wrong..

Re: The Football Topic

I was intending to post on this subject yesterday after reading on the BBC website about the trails and recent tribulations of Plymouth Argyle.

Here is this ingrate paid a fortune per week, while clubs like Argyle are going under (courtesy of their own financial, mismanagement its true).

Peter Reid selling his medals to pay the wages and so on.

Tevez undoubtedly inspired the Hammers in their late flourish that season, but oh how he cost us too. Still paying Sheff United off (and I never worked that one out, should have fought that to the end).

But he has been here plying his trade in the Premiership for 5 years and to my knowledge has made little or no effort to adapt to life here. Doesn't attempt to speak the language in any interviews I have seen. His agent is a true low life. He has the player on a personal contract and flogs him mercilessly for his own profit. Tevez' renumeration presumably softens this blow, but he is classic case where the money goes out of the game to its detriment.

I have no sympathy for City in this matter. Reap as you sow. If you profigately spend money they way they have and do you deserve to attract the rubbish that goes with that policy.

I read some FIFA bod says he would like to take action against Tevez for the alleged incident, but why don't FIFA get real with the agents that are ruining the game beyond belief. But they won't as they collect fat fees for sanctioning them in the first place.

I detest the structure of the game today. TV money has distorted the game horribly, although there are some nice stadiums these days I suppose.

I know how it is though. If you were born to support Citeh then thats how it is for you....through the good and the bad. I feel the for the Argyle supporters right now though. Thats where Tevez' wages should be going for the next 2 weeks.

Re: The Football Topic

A great win for Aberdeen last night, the best football they've played for a long, long time. Some of their play was a joy to watch, it's not very often I can say that about them.
Hopefully they've turned the corner now and will start climbing up the table.

Re: The Football Topic

- speaking a lawyer friend of mine who practise is often involved with premiership issues (not this one I add) the word going around is that he could be kept on the books for 2 years and made to turn up to train as and when the Club see fit, and the first time he does n't his wages are stopped and those paid claimed back as he is in breach of contract...sounds good to me!

...if the English FA were any use to anybody they would step in and sort it out, but they are us much use as a chocolate teapot.....And whilst on that subject; I run a kids football team and coach U13's, - been with these boys since they were 5... The local FA have just issued instructions that if there is a clash of team kits then the away team MUST where an alternative kit!! Bibs are no longer allowed roll  Apparently the letter of the law that applies to Premiership teams (clear distinctive difference in kits down to shorts and socks) now applies to 8 year olds... hmm  So no more can we rely on a £15 collection of florescent yellow bibs in the kit bag, we have to now have a second FULL kit for every team...So who pays for that then? - We run our club on a not for profit basis with all of us managers and coaches volunteering our time for nothing, - we charge the parents exactly what it costs us to train (ground hire) and kit out the kids...Sponsorship has all but gone over the last year or so with present economic climate, - we have already had to subsidise a couple of the kids because parents have lost jobs and so on...The English FA and there regional FA's are unbelievably incompetent.  mad

Brack wrote:

What is this i read this morning ..." Manchester City have rejected West Ham's offer to take striker Carlos Tevez back to Upton Park on loan."

Who's the crazier ?

Classic Gold/Sullivan/Brady wind up. They believe all publicity is just that - publicity. It generates column inches for West Ham and doesn't have to have any substance - bit like the team most of the time!

They did it with the Olympic Stadium and everybody scoffed, but oh my, it has come off (maybe). Do we want it? (maybe not).

As to whether its crazy - it doesn't matter. Win/Win.Why, because a) we can't afford his wages so any offer would be too low and unacceptable to Citeh. b) he wouldn't want to play in the Championship anyway. c) it doesn't solve his ultimate problem which is getting back to play in Argentina or somewhere nearer his kids. d) if he did another 'I don't want to warm up and play' then he goes straight back to City anyway - wherever he is.

We (as supporters) don't have to like what 2 Davids do as or on behalf of West Ham. But if there idea of winding up the situation gives them and the club a buzz who am I to say anything? If it costs us nothing.....who cares.
