Topic: 11-52 tuned E flat or speaker trouble???

i'm hoping someone can help me with this as i've tried everything i can think of!
at high volumes for gigs i always have to compensate on my tone because my speakers sound like they are flapping and farting about inside the cab! i've always thought it was my speakers that were giving me the trouble but last nite i had the same trouble again threw a borrowed rig the same as mine, and then it got me thinking could it be the heavier strings plus the fact i'm tuned down to E flat, i've had the speakers checked by a good friend and can't find anything wrong with them....i know Joe uses EV's and they can take alot of stick at the bottom end but it'll be a costly upgrade which i cant afford or justify atm....HELP!!
this is what i use for home and gigging and it sounds brilliant at low volumes, i can get very close to Moore and Bonamassa tones!!

Re: 11-52 tuned E flat or speaker trouble???

It's almost impossible to diagnose without actually hearing what you are describing.  Any chance you could post a video?

A lot of times it's easiest to try and rule things out....

1.  Get the amp up to the volume level where you start to hear the "flapping an farting" from you amp...
2.  Plug directly into the amp (no effects)....Still "farting".... I don't know why but that makes me snicker...tee hee
     - If not then perhaps it's a pedal or one of pedal patch cords
     - If so then go to step 3.
3.  Ok, so now you know it' s one of 4 thing (high level)...guitar, chord from guitar amp, amp, speakers.
....

You see where I'm going with this?  I find it best to start by ruling things out as possible issues thereby narrowing down to the root cause.

Good Luck!!!

Re: 11-52 tuned E flat or speaker trouble???

What type of cabinet is it and what are the speakers? They might not have enough power handling for the head that you are using.

Guitars: Epiphone JBLP, Epiphone Les Paul Custom
Amps: Marshall Vintage Modern, 18 watt clone

Re: 11-52 tuned E flat or speaker trouble???

Its the cabinet itself..  I have this problem myself at high volumes..  You have to go in and re-enforce the screws  possibly add more like or mine a steel rod that runs the top to bottom with bolts and lock tight..It will sound like a blown speaker but I am almost positive that is whats going on...
Good Luck..

Thanks alot Joe for your valued info I will try this and see what ways I can tighten and make it more solid......the steel rod you mentioned is that so the cab becomes more rigid or to squeeze it more tightly? Not to worry I'll give both a try and let you know....cheers Joe
