Topic: Borders

I just got an email from Borders' CEO saying they'll be closing their doors.  They closed our Borders last spring which saddened me deeply.  I loved to go there to find new books and music and sit down and drink a cup of Joe with my purchases.  Sad news.

Re: Borders

Borders in the UK went under a couple of years ago.  Sad to see as it was a great place to go to browse magazines and books and my local store was always busy.  I really don't know how store-based retailers can compete nowadays with online retailers and the advent of downloads for both books and music.

Re: Borders

We had both, Borders and HMV at our local shopping centre .... now long gone!
You can see the changing face of the High St on a weekly basis. There was also your local Woolworth; now replaced by even cheaper £1 shops.

Re: Borders

I guess the public has spoken. The minority who enjoyed spending an hour or two at Borders (myself included) have been outvoted. Is Barnes & Noble next?

You would think B&N would be next to go, let's hope it's not TOO soon.

Re: Borders

I also just heard...they closed one but they said the other one was staying for sure....wow  what a bummer!

It was the place for cool magazines and music for sure,

I guess "Kindle & Nook" electronic reading devices caused a lot of this....Maybe Magazines will be gone down the road  ?

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.........

Re: Borders

Borders from what I heard always had a lot of Joe stuff.. It's sad to see them closing. I just read online that their liquidation deals are starting today too.

Re: Borders

30 years from now will we/they look back and marvel at how cute and antiquated the idea of physical media (books and music) was?  I hope not.  I hope the digital tide retreats a little and saves these valuable media forms to some degree.  But of course we will all be living in "the cloud" by then.  RIP Borders and all who went before you and will surely follow behind you.

Re: Borders

I saw an interesting bit on a local news show the other day about all the small book stores that have managed to stay alive in spite of Borders and Barnes and Nobles.  There are still a few out there and they are still alive and well, but unfortunately few and far between (kind of like a good camera store).  The owners they interviewed for this piece are optimistic about their future - there are still a lot of us who want a physical book to hold and read, and that magazine section will be missed.  Just curious, is Waterstone's still around in the UK?  They had a store in Boston many years back and some very interesting stuff they had.

Hope the physical book doesn't go the way of vinyl and cd's - I love vinyl (thank goodness it is making a comeback), and I have a hard time imagining reading a bedtime story to a little kid from an e-reader - just not the same.

Re: Borders

City Lights Bookstore in SF, founded in 1953(excellent year), by Lawrence Ferlighetti has weathered the storm. In 2001 it was made a historic landmark for it's contributions to the "Beat Generation" and will live on in infamy.

Re: Borders

Borders has gone here in Oz, as well as a chain called Angus & Robertson. They blamed the fact that people were buying books cheaper online. When you are selling product that is triple the price of the exact same item available online, then it's obvious you ain't going to be around much longer.

Whether it turns a profit or not is irrelavent. The store and it's clientele created "ground zero" for what became known as the "counter culture". No doubt events at City Lights were relevant to spawning the "free speech" movement across the bay in Berkeley and the rest as they say is history. Music as we know it wouldn't be the same without the "hippy movement", the love child of the Beat Generation.

Re: Borders

The FIRE! sale is on. All the Borders stores are liquidating all their inventory starting today @ drastic discounts. Get it while you can. Too bad the Borders store around the corner from the Blues Festival I'm working at today was one of the first to go under months ago, all that's left is the name on the building.

The cloud? roll The cloud can get downright foggy and not even come out at all on some sunless days.  A decent idea.  A great idea.  Not even a new idea.  But anyone who markets it as heavenly or "lives" in it is in for some serious future rehab...
