I saw the show from right in front of Joe.  It was great, except the mic stand was in just about every picture I took.  Note to self, next time, go to the center.  Joe faced Jason for a lot of his solos, so I would have seen him better from there.  No worries, though, it was a great night all the way around.

I would like to note one thing about Joe's playing, and it is just an observation, and not a criticism.  Two days before the DC show, he Tweeted and posted on FB about the posters over at The Gear Page taking cheap shots.  I read most of the posts in the thread I believe he was talking about, the one about the ticket prices.  One of the posts took a cheap shot at Joe for utilizing that one famous Eric Johnson lick.  I think we all know the one I'm talking about.  Its all over the Royal Albert Hall show, I think its there in Black Rock, its definitely in BCC 1 (One Last Soul in particular) it is on Dust Bowl, and its on BCC 2.  So the guy said Joe only plays "that one lick (well its Eric Johnson's lick)" or something close to that.  I don't know if this was the comment that got to Joe, or one of them, but it certainly caught my attention.

Fast forward to the concert.  I went probably about half the concert without thinking about this guy's remark  Joe seemed to play the One Last Soul solo pretty close to note-for-note from what he did in the studio, so I know that lick was there.  But as I was watching the show, I noticed he was pulling out some older licks that I had not really heard him play since 2007 (Blues Deluxe) and 2005 (A New Day Yesterday.)  That reminded me of the Eric Johnson lick, and so for the rest of the show, I paid attention, and I don't think I heard it.  It made me wonder if Joe was purposefully avoiding it.

One thing about Joe playing that lick - He's always owned up to the fact that as of late, his live soloing has been heavily influenced by Eric Johnson.  I saw one YouTube video where he said it himself.  Its a great lick, Joe pulls it off exceptionally well, and honestly, everyone rips off everyone else, and they have been for a long, long time.  I think Joe likes that lick a lot (or he wouldn't use it as much as he does) and his fans love when he plays it.  If some guy (or girl) on The Gear Page wants to trash Joe for playing it, so what?  They are probably just jealous that they can't play it half as fast, or half as well as Joe does.

Well, it's been a busy week, so I haven't had a chance to post my review until now. Good to see Jane, Bob (you still owe me an email), David A., Forever Young (and is it Never Get Old? I forget!), and Carl up at the railing.

My verdict? A great straight-ahead, balls-to-the-wall rock and roll show. Nothing like being on the rail. I brought ear plugs and had them in at the start of the show, but pulled them out before the first chorus. I wanted the full experience, and Joe's Marshalls were definitely turned up vs. his blues show. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

We arrived at the venue right as Jane and friend were emerging with signed treasures, then she graciously offered to help us out with our parking situation. But I ended up moving my trusty Tacoma again-- actually ended up parking right behind Joe's bus! Talk about front row seats!

I thought the band sounded very tight, especially considering it was only their, what? ninth show? I shot five videos; Crossfire, Hadrian's Wall, Song of Yesterday, Outsider and Ballad of John Henry. I'll try to post them on YouTube soon. Other songs, like Save Me (very Zeppelin-esque), Great Divide, and of course, One Last Soul, I just pocketed the camera and rocked along with the rest of the crowd.

No complaints about this show. Glenn looks like a lively elf up there, prancing around with joyful abandon. He must have told the crowd five times, "We're building a foundation!" so I don't think BCC's going to go away any time soon. His paternal instincts toward Joe are also obvious; after one of Joe's solos he even said, "that's my boy!" A couple of times he ran to the edge of the stage with such glee I thought he was going to crowd surf!

(Speaking of which, thankfully there was none of that in the crowd, and no mosh pit either. Everyone's attention was on the music and the performers.)

Derek was in the mix more at the live show than he is on either album, but he also seems content to cede the attention to the others and focus on crafting a mood that the others build on. I wore a vintage Dream Theater shirt and when he came out after the show, I got to tell him "this is for you!" (He just seemed like the silent guy, never interviewed, so I felt he could use the support.) That made him laugh.

Jason was an absolute BEAST on the drums. VERY entertaining, very powerful. He was having fun, it was obvious. All I can say is, with his famous heritage it's probably the elephant in the room everywhere he goes (not that there aren't worse people to be compared to), but as far as I'm concerned, he's no longer in his father's shadow. He asked me, "Did you like the show?" and I answered without hesitating, "Yes, and we'll like the next one, too!" Because I KNOW we'll be seeing them in concert next time they come around.

And as for Joe, well, I guess I can forgive him for giving Bob the set list. At least he tried to throw me a pick, it hit me in the chest, but when it fell to the darkness of the floor someone younger out-scrounged me for it. I had a second chance when he threw a cloud of them at the end of the show, but alas, they were snapped up almost before they hit the ground. But his performances? Let's just say his string remains unbroken for me; I've never left one of his shows even the least bit disappointed. (Wait, there were those mezzanine seats in Wilkes-Barre that required binoculars, but that was hardly his fault.)

Ultimately, I had a sense that this was an historic occasion. Everyone's dream is to see a band that turns into something iconic "back in the day" at a small club, from the front row. Whether that's what awaits BCC, I can't tell you. But I'm rooting for 'em.

To be honest, it was pretty much luck of the draw which ones I videoed, because I don't always recognize the first notes of a song when I hear it live for the first time. And when I'm up front, I try to get a song or two, but I also don't want to watch the whole show through my little viewfinder either.

And yes, missing out on that pick was a bummer. After 17 Joe shows, you'd think I'd have more concert swag to show for it! I think between the two of us we have one pick and one Bogey drumstick! (Although we do have every CD Joe's ever made, signed by the artist.)

man i think its finally starting to hit me. as i mentioned i have alot on my mind so i just really couldn't immerse myself fully but listening to '2' i am going nuts. i want to be back at the show so bad. i want there to be BCC cover/tribute bands so i can just have a little taste till next time. i am overcome with the music being in me and just singing along, i think my singing is improving a tiny bit and i keep making gestures and spontaneous moevemnts like Glenn,. to be honest some of his stage stuff i found distracting at first, even over the top but now i am doing it like that and I am like feeling it like that,  or i mean at least a little like i think how it must be for him. it feels so good.
and i can't put it into proper words about each but Joe is just tearing it up and Jason and Derek both mind blowing. truly great band. perfect cd too.its so right.

i mean i seriously can't wait for the Joe solo show but i also am starting to actually believe my dreams can come true and be @#$%^^&# better than i had fantasized.

What you see Glenn doing is completely natural for him. He is so comfortable up on a stage and he just lets it all out. Did you or anyone see even a glimpse of doubt or awkwardness with him? He is at the absolute top of his game as a front man. For most in a rock band, having the guitar, in his case the bass, would be a detriment to the front man from a showmanship POV. He actually makes it work even better than if he were just singing and moving about the stage. His playing and intensity adds to the power of this band in a huge way. It simply wouldn't be nearly as good if he just stood there and played. He is unique in every way. One of a kind. It was something to behold. How he gets better and better still is beyound me but he does. Playing with these guys has taken it to the next level.
As to a tribute band, nah. Who could do these guys justice?? Who would nail the Joe part? Who could come close to Glenn? We're gonna have to wait until next time. So seize the moment Jane when that moment comes. Concerts are one of the best ways to completely forget those things we all have on our minds.

It's funny but once a show like that starts I am so immersed in the moment that I don't even think that hey I'm standing for x number of hours or whatever. The thought never crossed my mind. I could have gone for a couple more hours easily if need be. Sit down shows are a bore at times. The last Joe show we hit was I think Reading which was awesome to say the least as he too keeps raising the bar. But I was actually told to shhhssh when I cheered at one point! I almost had to laugh. I was too taken aback to even go there. I though what are we at the @#$%^^&# opera man?? Anyhow, I just prefer the standing thing. It keeps you young and on yer toes so to speak. Of course if sadly you physically can't stand then that's totally different.

Well it's a month later and I'm finally getting around to posting in here.  I always have a bunch of stuff in my head during shows and on the drive home that I want to comment on, but transferring those thoughts to a post later on can be challenging for me, for whatever reason.  At this point I'll skip most of it, because you all have pretty much said it all already... but in summary, it was great to rock out to a real old-fashioned hard rock band with such great talent and songs.  I generally thought the band played tight together, Glenn's vocals were amazing, and the mix was great.  It was a loud show, but the room had good sound.  They looked like they were having a ball up there.  Oh, and Derek's keyboard solo was intense and had that true classic rock sound... so cool.  cool

I'm happy to report that my brother was sufficiently impressed with the band and material... he really enjoyed himself, and BCC seems to have his seal of approval... and that's saying a lot, as he's very critical musically, and was not a Joe fan.

I found some of the comments here about Joe's soloing interesting, because the only negative comment my brother had about the show concerned some of Joe's solos, and I had to admit I had some similar thoughts myself.  He conceded that Joe definitely can play, but said sometimes his solos didn't seem to fit in right with the song and the rest of the band.  I think it was more the way they would break up the song's tempo than anything.  Like I'd be dancing to the beat, and then the soloing would start, and I'd lose the rhythm.  Even the band looked at Joe a few times like "what are you doing?"  But I must say, this only comprised a few moments of the entire show, and was a minor complaint for both of us.

I wish we could've gotten there earlier and spent more time with people.  We ended up actually stopping to eat on the way down (instead of just hitting a drive-thru), plus got stuck in traffic for a while.  To save on my bar bill, I had brought along a big bottle of premixed Absolut & juice, which I had to suck down in the parking lot in a much shorter period of time than planned, so I was fairly hammered when I finally wandered in the door close to show time.  And then I continued to drink all night, and I rocked out and had a blast... all much needed therapy for sure.  Not to worry... my brother drove my car home (he wasn't drinking at all) and we made it home without incident.  smile

I was keeping my eye out for familiar faces all night, but only managed to connect with Carl, Jane, Bob/Tarus, and John/ForeverYoung & Kim.  If I'm forgetting anybody, please forgive me... as I stated, I was pretty trashed by the end of the night, which is when I finally caught up with most these people.  Apparently there were a lot of forumers there whom I missed... oh well, hopefully next time.

Jim, did you greatly scale back the number of photos in that slideshow?  Because I originally spotted my brother in a crowd shot taken before the show, and if it wasn't your pics, I can't figure out whose it was.  He was in the lower left quandrant of the photo wearing a red Chickenfoot t-shirt, fairly easy to spot because he was turned around (probably looking for me to walk through the door, as I would've still been out in the car chugging my large adult beverage, lol).  His online name is zbird, and I was gonna point him out incase anyone knows him.  He did say he has some online friends who should've been there... not sure if any of them ever visit this forum or not.

Hey, Vikki, mystery solved!

I actually saw your brother! I pointed out his red Chickenfoot shirt to Jocelyn. (We've seen them twice in concert.) Unless there was more than one Chickenfoot shirt in attendance, that is.

We were up front to the right of the stage, right up by Joe; your brother was on the left side, back a few "rows" from the stage. I just never saw you in the crowd. But at least now I know why!  smile

I had the chance to see them in Washington DC which was only their 7th or 8th show I think, and I was very impressed with them. I thought to myself at the time that I was seeing the start of something important in the music world and that they could only get better as time goes on. It takes a lot these days to impress me as far as new music goes but this band is really that good IMO. Go see them if they come around to your area and I promise you won't be dissapointed.


(By the way, I mentioned before that my brother's online name is zbird (his old cockatoo's name)... well that's everywhere except on Dime, where he's ORION777... originally a friend's account, which he used to use occassionally, and then he took it over when his friend died last year.)
